Exploring Iceland: Self-Drive and Soak

Exploring Iceland: Self-Drive and Soak

Written by Marie Holman

Iceland is a dream destination for travellers who crave the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. With snow-fed waterfalls roaring to life and hot springs offering warm retreats, April is an ideal time for a self-driving adventure.  Iceland is truly breathtaking and one to add to your bucket list for self-driving enthusiasts.

Hello Iceland

Essential Tips

  1. Dress for the Occasion:
Bring swimsuits and quick-dry towels for hot springs and waterproof clothing for exploring waterfalls. Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key.
  2. Rent the Right Vehicle:
A 4WD vehicle is ideal for reaching more remote spots especially if the roads are still icy or muddy.  If possible, hire a Hybrid vehicle – it will save you money when filling up for fuel!
  3. Plan for Daylight Hours:
In April, you’ll enjoy 13-16 hours of daylight, but always check the time for sunset to avoid driving in the dark on unfamiliar roads.
  4. Stay Informed:
Use apps like Vedur for weather updates and Road.is to monitor road conditions, especially when heading to remote areas.
