Where Fairytale Landscapes Meet the Sea

Cruising the enchanting waters of the St. Lawrence River aboard PONANT’s elegant Le Lyrial felt like waking up to a different fairytale each day. From the striking red sandstone cliffs of the Magdalen Islands to the dramatic fjords of Newfoundland, every new horizon revealed another breathtaking landscape.

With spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and the unforgettable sight of majestic whales in their natural habitat, this was a journey that continually surprised and captivated me. There was something truly magical about discovering this remarkable corner of the world from the water.

Life onboard the Le Lyrial with Ponant

What made this voyage even more special was experiencing it aboard one of PONANT’s intimate luxury expedition ships. There’s a certain privilege that comes with small-ship cruising – the ability to venture into secluded harbours and lesser-explored destinations that larger cruise ships simply cannot reach. It offers a beautiful balance of adventure, cultural discovery and understated luxury.

Aboard Le Lyrial, elegant French-inspired interiors, exceptional service and exquisite cuisine created a wonderfully refined onboard experience. Yet what truly elevated the journey was PONANT’s passionate expedition team and expert naturalist guides, whose fascinating insights and storytelling brought the landscapes, wildlife and rich history of the region to life. It was this seamless blend of exploration, comfort and meaningful discovery that made the experience so memorable.

A River Steeped in History

Beyond its breathtaking beauty, the mighty St. Lawrence River holds a fascinating history that has shaped Canada for centuries. Long before European explorers arrived, this remarkable waterway was a vital lifeline for Indigenous peoples, connecting communities through trade and travel.

In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed its waters, paving the way for European settlement and the eventual growth of historic cities such as Québec City and Montréal. Today, the river remains one of North America’s most important waterways, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes and supporting international trade and hydroelectric power. As we cruised along its majestic waters, it was fascinating to reflect on the centuries of history that had unfolded along these very shores.

The Beauty of the Magdalen Islands

One of the many highlights of the first part of this cruise, was a call to the enchanting Magdalen Islands, arriving in the charming village of Cap-aux-Meules. It was love at first sight! With their dramatic red sandstone cliffs, colourful fishing villages, picturesque coastal scenery and wonderfully laid-back island atmosphere, these islands have a charm all of their own. Adding to the magic was my very first sighting of grey seals, a special moment that made this beautiful corner of the world even more memorable.
Beyond their breathtaking natural beauty, the Magdalen Islands are a culinary delight, renowned for their exceptional artisanal cheeses and fresh, locally caught seafood. As part of PONANT’s included daily shore excursions, we had the pleasure of visiting one of the islands’ celebrated cheesemakers and a traditional seafood smokehouse, offering a wonderful glimpse into the region’s rich culinary heritage. From delicious handcrafted cheeses to succulent lobster and the islands’ famous smoked herring, the local flavours were every bit as memorable as the scenery. For lovers of fine food and authentic culinary experiences, these charming islands are sure to tantalise your tastebuds and leave you wanting more.

The Journey into Another World

Along came another unforgettable moment on this incredible itinerary with PONANT – the picturesque fishing village of Woody Point.Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this colourful little village perfectly captures the charm, character and rugged beauty of Newfoundland.

The real surprise was still to come. That afternoon, we ventured into the remarkable Tablelands, one of the few places on Earth where you can actually walk across rock from the Earth’s mantle, normally hidden deep beneath the surface. What makes this place so extraordinary is the dramatic transformation in scenery. Lush green forests and towering mountains suddenly give way to a vast, barren landscape of rust-coloured rock, so strikingly different from its surroundings that it feels almost otherworldly. Walking through this extraordinary geological wonder was like stepping onto another planet. A truly humbling experience and a powerful reminder of just how fascinating and diverse our natural world really is.

A Front-Row Seat to Nature’s Greatest Show

Just when I thought this extraordinary PONANT voyage couldn’t possibly surprise me any further, along came the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian autumn. As we sailed through the latter half of our journey, the landscapes were transformed into a spectacular tapestry of fiery reds, golden yellows and rich amber hues. Everywhere I looked, nature was putting on its most magnificent display.
The charming village of Tadoussac was an unforgettable highlight, where we were fortunate enough to encounter three magnificent whale species; the iconic white belugas, minke whales and the enormous fin whale, the second-largest animal on Earth. Witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, surrounded by spectacular autumn scenery, was simply breathtaking. A truly magical experience I’ll treasure forever.

Old-World Charm & Autumn Elegance

Last but certainly not least, we arrived in one of Canada’s most enchanting and celebrated destinations, Québec City. Without question, one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever had the pleasure of exploring, and one that truly lived up to every expectation. With its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, beautifully preserved fortifications, charming cobblestone streets and unmistakable European elegance, Québec City was simply captivating. Add the spectacular colours of the Canadian autumn, and the entire city felt like something straight from a storybook. Every corner revealed another picturesque scene, making it impossible not to fall in love with its timeless charm. If there was one place I wished we could have lingered a little longer, it was here. I simply didn’t want to leave!

This PONANT voyage was a beautiful reminder that some of the worlds most extraordinary experiences lie beyond the well-travelled paths. Eastern Canada truly captured my heart & discovering it in such intimate luxury made the journey all the more special. If you are dreaming of a holiday that blends adventure, natural beauty and refined luxury, this is one voyage I simply cannot recommend highly enough. I’d love to help you discover this extraordinary part of the world for yourself.
