A One-Night Adventure on The Ghan

A One-Night Adventure on The Ghan

Written by Shannon Vogel

The Ghan is one of Australia’s most iconic train journeys, running through the heart of the Outback. Named after Afghan cameleers who helped open up Australia’s interior, this train journey promises both comfort and scenic views.

If you’re visiting the red centre and are keen to try an alternative mode of transport to get from Alice Springs to Darwin, a one-night trip, with a stop in Katherine to explore Nitmiluk National Park, offers a perfect blend of luxury and adventure.

My journey began when we were welcomed on board and shown to our Gold single cabins. Suitcases are stored under the train – so be sure to have an overnight bag large enough to hold essentials only for your journey!

The Gold Single cabins, whilst small – were incredibly comfortable. The small cupboard had hangers ready for unpacking our dinner outfits, a convenient shelf with a power outlet, and the basin and mirror area was perfect for freshening up before bed. The shared bathrooms were surprisingly large and exceptionally clean, with an array of complimentary toiletries.

After settling in we made our way to the bar to sample the cocktail menu, before moving next door to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for a delicious 3 course regionally-inspired dinner. Crocodile dumplings and slow braised beef, finished off with honey and macadamia frozen parfait definitely did not disappoint!

By the time we returned to our cabin – our lounge’s had been turned down into super cosy beds. The movement of the train took a little getting used to – but I soon settled into one of the most comfortable travel sleeps I have ever had.

After breakfast on board, you’ll arrive in Katherine, ready for a day of exploration at Nitmiluk National Park. Known for the stunning Katherine Gorge, this park is a must-see for anyone visiting the Northern Territory.

Once back on board The Ghan we resumed our journey on to Darwin. Over the next few hours you can relax in the lounge, take in the landscape, unwind in your cabin – or sneak in one last meal at the Queen Adelaide restaurant where a light supper is offered in the late afternoon. The endless views of red earth and rugged ranges give way to another stunning sunset.

The Ghan was an excellent experience that I would absolutely do again. The friendly team, stunning landscapes and all inclusive service really make for a premium travel experience.
