Alaska: Nature, Ice and Wonder

Written by Danielle Jackson

Alaska had always been on my bucket list, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer beauty and magic of experiencing it firsthand. From the vibrant streets of Anchorage to the serene waters of the Kenai Fjords, and the icy wonderlands of its glaciers, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard.

Anchorage: Where Adventure Begins

My journey started in Anchorage, a city that perfectly balances modern comforts with wild surroundings. One of my favorite stops was the Anchorage Museum. I spent hours wandering its exhibits, learning about Alaska’s indigenous cultures and admiring stunning artwork that seemed to capture the very soul of the state. It was a perfect introduction to Alaska’s rich heritage.

Another highlight of my time in Anchorage was the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s incredible wildlife. Nestled in a stunning mountain valley, the center provides a safe haven for animals like moose, bison, and brown bears.

What I loved most about the center was its commitment to conservation and education. Every enclosure and exhibit told a story about Alaska’s unique ecosystems and the efforts to protect them for future generations. It wasn’t just a visit—it was a chance to connect with the wildlife that makes Alaska so extraordinary.

Seward and the Kenai Fjords: A Day of Awe

From Anchorage, I hopped on the Alaska Railroad to Seward, and let me tell you, this train ride is something special. As the train weaved through mountains and along rivers, I couldn’t take my eyes off the scenery. Snow-capped peaks, shimmering lakes, and maybe even a bear or two—it was magical.

Seward itself is a charming coastal town, but the highlight was undoubtedly the Kenai Fjords Cruise. For six unforgettable hours, I was surrounded by towering cliffs, glistening blue waters, and the raw beauty of Alaska’s coastline. The wildlife was incredible—playful sea otters floated by, massive lion seals basked on rocky outcroppings, and a humpback whale breached right before our eyes, sending ripples through the water. It felt like nature was putting on a private show just for us, leaving me in awe of the world beneath and above the waves.

Flying High and Landing on Ice

The pinnacle of my trip was the helicopter dogsledding and glacier landing experience. Taking off in the helicopter, soaring over rugged peaks and endless stretches of ice, was exhilarating. When we landed on the glacier, the sheer silence and beauty of the place took my breath away.

Meeting the sled dogs was such a joy—they were eager and energetic, clearly loving every moment of what they do. Gliding across the glacier on a sled, with nothing but snow and sky around me, was an experience I’ll never forget.

Leaving a Piece of My Heart in Alaska

Every stop on this trip reminded me of why I’d always dreamed of coming to Alaska. From the culture and history of Anchorage to the untamed beauty of Seward and the thrill of exploring glaciers, it was a journey of a lifetime.

Alaska isn’t just a place you visit—it’s a place that stays with you, calling you back again and again. And I know I’ll be back.
