From Hot Pools to Heli-Skiing

From Hot Pools to Heli-Skiing

Written by Alana Debritt

Queenstown has long held a place on my must-return list, and after spending a week there, it’s easy to see why it continues to captivate travellers from around the world. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and framed by the dramatic Southern Alps, Queenstown is a destination that offers the perfect balance of adventure, indulgence, and serenity.

Heli Ski Lunch

One of the most relaxing moments of my trip came early on with a visit to the Queenstown Onsen Hot Pools. Sitting in a steaming cedar tub overlooking the Shotover River canyon, I watched the clouds roll over the mountains as the sun began to dip. The peaceful seclusion, paired with a glass of local pinot noir, was the perfect way to unwind and ease into holiday mode.

A short drive from Queenstown led me to the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown, a charming village filled with heritage buildings, boutique shops, and cafes. Wandering the tree-lined main street felt like stepping back in time. I spent the morning exploring the local museum, before settling in for lunch at a café where the fireplace was roaring and the coffee was strong.

Queenstown’s culinary scene is world-class, and I made it my mission to try as much as possible. Rātā, Botswana Butchery, and Aosta stood out as favourites—each offering incredible local produce with creative flair. I also explored nearby Gibbston Valley, sampling some of the region’s finest wines. A leisurely afternoon of tasting pinot noirs and cheese platters, surrounded by vineyards and snowy peaks, felt like pure bliss.

But the true highlight of my trip—the absolute pinnacle—was heli-skiing with Southern Lakes Heli Ski. From the moment the helicopter lifted off, I knew I was in for something special. The flight alone was breathtaking, with endless snow-covered ranges stretching out in every direction. We landed on untouched alpine terrain, where the snow was light and deep and the only sound was the crunch of skis carving through powder. Guided by experienced pros, we enjoyed several exhilarating descents in remote backcountry locations. It was a surreal, adrenaline-fuelled experience that I’ll never forget

Whether I was sipping wine under crisp blue skies, soaking in a hot pool with a view, or skiing untouched mountain faces accessible only by helicopter, Queenstown offered a perfect week of contrasts and unforgettable moments. It’s a destination that rewards both thrill-seekers and soul-searchers alike—and I already can’t wait to go back.
