Inside Intrepid Premium

Wild. Green. Grounded.

Sri Lanka surprised me.

It’s busy, colourful and alive, but nobody feels rushed. It’s what I can only describe as chaotically calm. Jungle everywhere. Fresh food. Community at the centre of everything.

What struck me most was the gratitude. The quiet pride. The way people genuinely welcome you.

If you are going to do Sri Lanka, do it properly. Intrepid Premium is the way.

The Premium Difference

We were a group of 12. A mix of solo travellers and couples, including Intrepid loyalists on their fourteenth trip. Structured but never rigid. You move together, but you always have space.

From the moment we landed, it felt seamless. Transfers organised. Luggage handled. A beautiful local guide who gave us real insight into why things did and did not happen in Sri Lanka’s history.

Every morning he handed us a freshly picked flower before we boarded the bus. Small detail. Big impact.

Sigiria Rock

Sigiriya: Tough but Worth It

The climb up Sigiriya Rock is not easy. It’s hot, there are stairs, and at the very top it becomes single file in both directions.

But it is completely doable.

There are natural breaks. You go at your own pace. And when you reach the summit, it opens into wide views over endless green. Being in a group means you will have some of your group at each portion of the journey. No awkwardness or shame in taking it as your pace!

I felt accomplished standing up there. Small in the best possible way.

Wildlife, Done Ethically

We visited Minneriya National Park and saw elephants properly. In their space. No chaos. No crowding.

You notice the difference when you travel with a licensed, responsible operator.

Monkeys are everywhere. Completely wild. Completely unbothered. Our tour guide navigated the game reserve with the animal’s welfare in mind. We were sitting silently next to multi-generational families of elephants, softly blinking back at us.

It felt respectful and intimate all at once.

Nanu Oya Scenic Train Ride

Yes, it really is as beautiful as Instagram says.

The train from Nanu Oya winds slowly through rolling tea plantations, misty hills and dense jungle that feels almost unreal in its colour. Bright green layered against soft mountain fog. Tiny villages passing by. Women in colourful saris walking along the tracks. It feels cinematic.

What I loved most was the pace. It is not rushed. It gently moves through the landscape, giving you time to actually take it in instead of just photographing it.

With Intrepid Premium, we had reserved seating and space to breathe. No overcrowded carriages. No fighting for door space. Other cabins had locals leaning out of open doors and packed aisles, but ours felt calm and comfortable.

Three hours was the perfect length. Long enough to experience it fully, but not so long that you felt tired or cramped. And at the end, our transfer was waiting, so the journey flowed seamlessly into the next stay.

The Stays

Premium in Sri Lanka really shines in the accommodation.

Amaya Lake in Dambulla was peaceful and surrounded by nature, with elephant crossings nearby.

Amaya Hills in Kandy sits above the city with incredible views. We were there during a Buddhist celebration with fire dancing and fireworks. It felt special.

The Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya is historic and elegant. High tea, champagne, gardens, character – and where Queen Elizabeth herself used to stay!

The beautiful Garden’s videoed here had be captivated for hours.
