Queenstown in the Winter, more than just a ski town!

Queenstown in the Winter, more than just a ski town!

From champagne on Milford Sound to sunny ski days at Cardrona and sunset dining at Walter Peak, my latest adventure revealed just how much Queenstown and Wanaka offer beyond the slopes.

Winter Adventures Beyond the Slopes

Champagne on Milford Sound, two days up the mountain and Walter Peak at sunset – my recent trip to Queenstown and Wanaka brought together so many of the things I love about New Zealand. The mountains are always a drawcard for me, but this time, some of my favourite memories were made away from the snow.

Our first excursion was an absolute standout:  Milford Sound. There’s something quite humbling about being on the water beneath those towering cliffs, with waterfalls spilling down the rock faces around you. We started our day with a scenic drive aboard a luxury Mercedes Sprinter Van, complete with blankets and drinks.  The scenery on this drive was beautiful, driving past snow-covered paddocks filled with sheep, through Te Anau with a stop for a delectable morning tea and onwards to Milford Sound.  We boarded the beautiful Milford Sound Business Class cruise, the MV Sinbad, the experience felt particularly special. Champagne on arrival set the scene, followed by a five-course tasting menu showcasing produce local to the area. It was easily my favourite meal of the trip – the food and the setting made such a memorable combination.

A Scenic Flight to Remember

As spectacular as Milford was from the water, the scenic flight back to Queenstown was another experience altogether. I was very nervous beforehand, but the views were stunning. Seeing the landscape from above gave me a whole new appreciation for its scale and beauty.

It’s hard to put into words just how impressive it was, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to experience it. That flight is one of the moments I’ll remember most from this trip.

Flying over Lake Wakatipu and the snow-covered Southern Alps was an unforgettable way to experience New Zealand’s spectacular scenery.

Sunny Days on the Slopes at Cardrona

Of course, a visit to this part of New Zealand wouldn’t feel complete for me without some time on the snow. We spent two days at Cardrona, with Wanaka as our base.  Cardrona is a fantastic mountain, catering to all abilities and the sunny skies made each day feel like magic.

Cardrona’s new Soho Basin adds even more terrain to explore, while this season’s snowfall has given snow lovers another reason to smile. Strong mid-season snow and good conditions have allowed Cardrona to extend its 2026 season to mid October. For anyone who thinks a snow holiday must happen in the middle of winter, it’s a reminder to consider spring too.

A Steamship Journey and Sunset Dining

The TSS Earnslaw and Walter Peak offered another memorable experience. Travelling across Lake Wakatipu aboard the historic steamship was a fantastic reminder of the region’s past.

There’s something special about a journey that feels so connected to the place you’re visiting.

Paired with Walter Peak’s Gourmet BBQ Dining and the spectacular gardens at sunset, it made for a beautiful evening. Those gardens were a real highlight for me.

Something for Everyone in Queenstown and Wanaka

This trip reminded me how much there is to enjoy around Queenstown and Wanaka, whether you’re there for the snow, the food or the scenery.

Some experiences were exciting, others were wonderfully relaxed, and one pushed me a little outside my comfort zone. There truly is something for everyone in New Zealand!
