Japan & South Korea by Sea

This trip had been on my wish list for years and it didn’t disappoint. Travelling from Osaka to Kanazawa aboard the Heritage Adventurer, with a side visit to South Korea, gave me a unique way to explore both countries. Big cities, quiet villages, historic sites, and scenic coastlines, all without ever unpacking twice. Bliss.

Osaka and Nara

We began our adventure in Osaka, where we visited the impressive Osaka Castle and soaked up the city’s rich history. A short journey took us to Nara, home to the friendly, free-roaming deer of Nara Park and the massive Todaiji Temple, which houses a giant bronze Buddha. It was a memorable start to the journey and gave us a taste of Japan’s deep cultural roots.

Life on the Heritage Adventurer

Our floating hotel quickly became a welcome retreat after each day’s adventures. The cabins were spacious, the food always hit the spot, and the observation lounge was the perfect place to sip tea and watch Japan’s coastline slip by. The expedition team were not just knowledgeable, but genuinely passionate about the places we visited, and it showed.

Exploring Coastal Japan

In Takamatsu, known as the udon capital of Japan, we explored more than just noodles. A peaceful stroll through the beautifully landscaped Ritsurin Gardens and a wander through Shikoku Mura Village gave us a glimpse into the region’s traditional life and culture.

Uwajima gave us one of the warmest welcomes of the trip, with local boats guiding us into port,a truly special moment. We took in the views and fresh air with a walk through Yakushidani Gorge, complete with waterfalls, forest paths, and a calming sense of stillness.

Welcome Boats

In Hagi, we visited the impressive Akiyoshido Cave, one of Japan’s largest limestone caverns. It felt like an underground world carved by time, cool, expansive, and quietly awe-inspiring.

Sakaiminato brought us back into the sunlight with a visit to Mount Daisen. With pine scented trails and temple dotted ridges, it was peaceful, scenic, and a refreshing contrast to the bustle of the towns and cities. It was the kind of place that invites you to pause and just enjoy the moment.

Hiroshima & Miyajima

Visiting Hiroshima was a deeply moving and powerful experience. Visiting Peace Memorial Park, the A Bomb Dome, and the museum, was highly emotional and humbling. It’s a place that reminds you of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of peace.

Not far away, Miyajima Island felt like a completely different world. We zipped to the island by zodiac, and visited the famous floating torii gate, which was just as beautiful as the photos, and the deer that roam freely around the island added a quirky charm.

The Children’s Peace Monument is a monument for peace to commemorate Sadako Sasaki and the thousands of child victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima

A Glimpse of South Korea

In Busan, South Korea, we spent the day exploring a vibrant mix of art, city views, and seaside calm. Gamcheon Culture Village was full of colour and creativity, with murals and winding lanes at every turn. We enjoyed the sweeping views from Busan X the Sky Tower, and ended the day at Yonggungsa Temple, dramatically perched on the rocks at the edge of the sea.

Wrapping Up in Kanazawa & Tokyo

Our final stop in Japan was Kanazawa, where we visited Yunokuni no Mori, a traditional crafts village where we got hands-on with local techniques. And yes, I did try the gold-leaf ice cream, which tastes like luxury!

The next day, we hopped on the bullet train to Tokyo and said our goodbyes to the incredible Heritage Expeditions team.  After our farewells, I decided to visit the mind-blowing teamLab Borderless digital art museum. It was the perfect modern contrast to everything I’d seen and a great end to the journey.

Final Thoughts

This trip struck the perfect balance between guided excursions, cultural insight, and free time. Seeing both Japan and South Korea by small ship made the whole experience feel relaxed and personal. If you’re looking to explore this part of the world in a unique and immersive way, without packing and repacking your suitcase every night, then this is the way to do it!

Azamara Onward: A Journey, Not Just a Destination

In February this year I was invited to spend 2 nights onboard Azamara Onward as it sailed from Melbourne to Adelaide. As a first time cruiser I was very excited to experience this mode of travel – and I was definitely not disappointed!

Onward

Boarding in Melbourne, I noticed right away that the ship is smaller than the usual cruise giants. That’s a good thing! It was easy to get around, nothing felt too crowded, and the vibe is calm and easygoing. The ship felt luxurious, but not pretentious. The crew was friendly and helpful without being over the top.

Stateroom

There’s no packed schedule or pressure to do everything. You can grab a drink and watch the water roll by, eat a quiet dinner at one of the specialty restaurants, or catch some live music in the lounge. Whether you want to dress up a little or keep it casual, it’s your call.

With no stops between Melbourne and Adelaide, the ship is the destination. That means plenty of time to sit by the pool, check out the spa, or just kick back and reset.

Chef's Table Dinner At Prime

We unfortunately experienced very large swell when we woke up the morning after boarding – but the crew quickly pivoted plans and put on a beautiful brunch in the main dining room, and were handing out whatever guests needed to help quell their nausea.

On the final morning, the ship rolls into Adelaide early. You can enjoy breakfast on board before heading off—no rush, no chaos.

Island Hopping: An Unforgettable Greek Getaway

Discovering Greece One Island at a Time

There’s something magical about exploring the Greek Islands and doing it with my daughter last October, made it even more unforgettable. We set off on a journey that took us from the vibrant heart of Athens to the tranquil charm of Koufonisia, soaking in sunsets, history, and plenty of delicious food along the way.

October turned out to be a great time to visit, with quieter crowds, cooler temperatures, and the same jaw dropping beauty at every turn. Worth noting, though, that by this time of year, many businesses are starting to close for the winter, so not everything will be open. If you’re looking for more choice when it comes to restaurants, shops, and activities, while still avoiding peak-season crowds, I’d recommend going in early to mid-September.

Thanks to Greece’s well connected ferry network, each island felt easily accessible, making it simple to hop from one destination to the next. Just be sure to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak travel months, to secure your preferred times and routes.

We spent around two days on each island, just enough to fall in love but not quite enough to see it all. If you’re planning your own adventure, consider giving yourself an extra day or two. Trust me, you’ll want it and like much of Greece, cats are everywhere, lounging in sun drenched doorways, weaving through tavernas and restaurants, adding to the island’s laid-back personality.

Athens: Where Myth Meets Modern Magic

We started our adventure off in Athens, a city buzzing with energy and rich in ancient tales and mythology. Watching the sunset over the Acropolis from a rooftop bar felt surreal, like the perfect introduction to Greece. We wandered through ancient ruins, marvelled at stories of Greek gods and goddesses at the Acropolis Museum, and got a true taste of local culture with flaky custard filled bougatsa and mouthwatering gyros in the bustling streets of Plaka.

And for fellow coffee lovers, don’t miss the Freddo Cappuccino, Greece’s signature iced coffee. Strong, smooth, and frothy, it became our go to drink every day!

Milos: Raw Beauty and Cliffside Charm

Next stop was Milos, a volcanic gem known for its lunar like landscapes.

With a rental car and no agenda, we cruised through charming villages and along narrow coastal roads.

Highlights included the colourful fishing village of Klima, the striking white cliffs of Sarakiniko Beach, and a sunset dinner at the famous Medusa restaurant at Mandrakia, right by the water. The traditional Oi Hamos Tavern, with its farm to table flavours, was a culinary highlight.

Mykonos: Iconic Sights and Seaside Vibes

Mykonos surprised us. It’s known for its glitz and glamour, but in October it feels more laid back and inviting.

We explored the famous windmills overlooking the sea and wandered through Little Venice, where waterfront bars spill out over the edge of the Aegean.

We indulged in a little boutique shopping, sampled pastries from the local bakery, and feasted on some of the freshest seafood we’ve ever had.

Paros: Village Vibes and Waterfront Dining

Paros was a dream, especially the hilltop village of Lefkes with its cobbled lanes and timeless charm.

Parikia offered the perfect mix of history and harborside relaxation, while Naoussa stole our hearts with its vibrant waterfront dining scene.

The food was fresh, flavourful, and full of heart.

Naxos: Easy going Island Life

Naxos offered the most relaxed vibe of all the islands. We spent our time wandering golden beaches, eating long lunches, and soaking in the unpretentious charm. It’s the kind of place where time slows down and you’re grateful for it.

Koufonisia: Small Island, Big Soul

Tiny but mighty, Koufonisia is a place you can walk across in an afternoon.

Though many spots were winding down for the season, we still found quaint shops, family run tavernas, and some of the most crystal clear blue water we have ever seen.

One of the most memorable moments came from our lovely villa host, who didn’t speak any English, but thank goodness for Google Translator, which really helped to communicate without too much confusion. She kindly prepared us a traditional Greek breakfast each morning. It was simple, fresh, and delicious, a perfect example of Greek hospitality at its finest.

Its simplicity and natural beauty made Koufonisia truly special.

Santorini: Sailing, Wine, and Jaw-Dropping Views

No Greek Island trip is complete without Santorini.

We explored the iconic white and blue villages and couldn’t stop taking photos of the breathtaking cliffside views.

Our sunset Oia Santorini Gems cruise around the caldera was hands down one of the highlights of the trip. Sailing past volcanic rock formations and diving into warm turquoise waters felt like a dream.

We also enjoyed a local winery tour, learning about Santorini’s unique volcanic soil and tasting some incredible wines with unforgettable views.

Crete: A Taste of the Largest Greek Island

Our final stop was Heraklion in Crete.

While we only had time to explore the main harbor area, we could sense that there’s so much more to discover on this island, which is the largest in Greece.

From ancient Minoan history to dramatic mountain landscapes and charming coastal towns, Crete is firmly on our list for a return visit with more time to explore.

Why Greece?

Because it’s a place where every island has its own personality, where the food is unforgettable, the people are warm and welcoming, and the pace of life invites you to slow down and savour every moment. From ancient Athens to the sun-soaked islands of the Aegean, this journey left a lasting impression on us both.

I can’t wait to return and discover even more of what Greece has to offer.

Rockies to the Red Rocks

Our adventure began in Denver, Colorado, the Mile High City, where the vibe is a perfect blend of urban cool and rugged outdoor spirit. Known for its craft beer scene, passionate sports culture, and proximity to the Rocky Mountains, Denver was the ideal launchpad for our journey.

Denver Colorado

We stayed close to the beautifully restored Denver Union Station, a grand landmark that now buzzes with restaurants, boutiques, and easy transit links including a direct train to the airport. It’s the kind of place where you can sip coffee, people-watch, and feel the pulse of the city all at once.

Denver Union Station

The real magic began as we boarded the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day rail journey from Denver to Moab. Pulling out of the city, the train made a steep climb into the Colorado Rockies. From our glass-dome coach, we watched the urban sprawl fade into a stunning tapestry of rugged canyons, dense forests, and the ever-winding Colorado River.

Rocky Mtneer

What sets the Rocky Mountaineer apart—besides the views—is the experience onboard. Think: gourmet meals, panoramic windows, and staff who somehow anticipate what you need before you do. It’s a luxury train ride, but one that still feels rooted in adventure.

Denver To Glenwood Springs

That evening, we arrived in Glenwood Springs, a charming mountain town famous for its natural hot springs. We stayed at the historic Hotel Colorado, built in 1893 and steeped in old-world charm—and possibly a few ghost stories. (Let’s just say there were some mysterious creaks and bumps in the night!) Overlooking the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, the hotel had huge rooms and a cozy bar and restaurant where we unwound after a day on the rails.

Hotel Colorado Glenwood Springs

The next morning, we rolled into a whole new world. As we crossed into Utah, the landscape transformed dramatically. Gone were the lush greens of Colorado; in their place rose deep-red cliffs, sculptural hoodoos, and vast stretches of desert.

Colorado River

One highlight was Ruby Canyon—a remote, crimson-hued gorge carved by the Colorado River and inaccessible by road. Watching those towering cliffs pass by from the comfort of the train felt like peeking into a hidden world.

Ruby Canyon

The train journey ended in Moab, Utah—a lively desert town and the gateway to two of America’s most awe-inspiring national parks: Arches and Canyonlands. We spent two days exploring Arches, hiking past impossibly balanced rock formations like Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch. Each vista looked like a scene from another planet.

Arches Np 2

Canyonlands, by contrast, felt even more expansive and serene. In fact, I discovered it’s wider than the Grand Canyon (thanks, Google!)and to me, it felt just as grand, if not more so.

Canyonlands

From Moab, we drove five hours north to Salt Lake City, tracing the edge of Utah’s surreal desert terrain along the way. Arriving in the city felt like returning to civilization, but with the wildness of the West still lingering in the air.

Salt Lake is clean, friendly, and framed by dramatic, snow-dusted peaks. We stayed downtown near Temple Square, soaking up the mix of historical landmarks and modern culture. At night, we explored cozy cafés and vibrant restaurants, discovering a surprisingly creative and artsy side to the city.

Vast Canyonlands

This journey—from the alpine charm of Colorado to the fiery landscapes of Utah was the perfect combination of luxury, nature, and cultural exploration. Whether you’re a train travel enthusiast, a hiking junkie, or just someone who wants to see the heart of the American West in style, this route is truly unforgettable

A One-Night Adventure on The Ghan

The Ghan is one of Australia’s most iconic train journeys, running through the heart of the Outback. Named after Afghan cameleers who helped open up Australia’s interior, this train journey promises both comfort and scenic views.

If you’re visiting the red centre and are keen to try an alternative mode of transport to get from Alice Springs to Darwin, a one-night trip, with a stop in Katherine to explore Nitmiluk National Park, offers a perfect blend of luxury and adventure.

Ghan

My journey began when we were welcomed on board and shown to our Gold single cabins. Suitcases are stored under the train – so be sure to have an overnight bag large enough to hold essentials only for your journey!

The Gold Single cabins, whilst small – were incredibly comfortable. The small cupboard had hangers ready for unpacking our dinner outfits, a convenient shelf with a power outlet, and the basin and mirror area was perfect for freshening up before bed. The shared bathrooms were surprisingly large and exceptionally clean, with an array of complimentary toiletries.

Img 3620

After settling in we made our way to the bar to sample the cocktail menu, before moving next door to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for a delicious 3 course regionally-inspired dinner. Crocodile dumplings and slow braised beef, finished off with honey and macadamia frozen parfait definitely did not disappoint!

By the time we returned to our cabin – our lounge’s had been turned down into super cosy beds. The movement of the train took a little getting used to – but I soon settled into one of the most comfortable travel sleeps I have ever had.

Ghan Food

After breakfast on board, you’ll arrive in Katherine, ready for a day of exploration at Nitmiluk National Park. Known for the stunning Katherine Gorge, this park is a must-see for anyone visiting the Northern Territory.

Once back on board The Ghan we resumed our journey on to Darwin. Over the next few hours you can relax in the lounge, take in the landscape, unwind in your cabin – or sneak in one last meal at the Queen Adelaide restaurant where a light supper is offered in the late afternoon. The endless views of red earth and rugged ranges give way to another stunning sunset.

Img 3660

The Ghan was an excellent experience that I would absolutely do again. The friendly team, stunning landscapes and all inclusive service really make for a premium travel experience.

San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala

Tucked into the lush hills surrounding Lake Atitlan, San Pedro La Laguna is a town that captures the soul of Guatemala. It’s a place where you can chase adventure in the early hours of the morning and find yourself sipping coffee with locals by nightfall. My time here was full of meaningful experiences, ones that left me feeling more connected to the land, language and people than I ever expected.

Picture1

One of the highlights of my stay was the pre-dawn hike to the top of Indian Nose, a mountain that offers one of the most breathtaking sunrises I’ve ever seen. Guiden by my local Spanish teacher, the journey began in the dark, guided only by flashlight and the quiet crunch of volcanic soil underfoot. As we climbed, the sky gradually lightened, revealing layers of mist curling over the lake and the silhouettes of distant volcanoes. When the sun finally rose, it bathed the landscape in gold and orange hues, casting a magical glow over the entire region. It was worth every step and early wake-up call.

Pic

Back in town San Pedro welcomed me with it’s colourful murals, cobblestone streets, and the hum of everyday life. The Mayan culture and backpacker energy, where you can easily blend into the rhythm of local life. I enrolled in a Spanish school run by a local family – classes were held in a peaceful garden overlooking the lake. Learning Spanish here felt personal and immersive. My teacher was patient and passionate, and after class I’d often practice what I learned while chatting with street vendors or ordering food in tiny corner cafes.

Pic 7

What made San Pedro special wasn’t just the scenery or the language lessons; it was the people. Locals are warm and curious, and they made it easy to feel at home. I spent evenings playing soccer with the kids in the town square, sharing meals with my host family, or sitting on plastic stools at local commodores, laughing and exchanging stories in a mix of Spanish and hand gestures. These everyday interactions became the heart of my experience.

Pic 10

The town moves at its own pace – slow, sincere, and grounded. It invites you to pause, to learn, to connect. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of travel, checking off places and pictures, but San Pedro reminded me of the joy in staying still for a moment and soaking everything in. As I watched my final sunset from the lakeshore, I realised that San Pedro La Laguna wasn’t just a stop on my trip, it was a turning point. A place that gently pulled me out of my comfort zone and into a more mindful, human experience. Whether you’re seeking a physical challenge, cultural immersion, or simply a slower way to travel, San Pedro offers all of that and more, wrapped in the warmth of a lakeside town that feels like home.

Each port along the way offers a new perspective.

For example, day 3 brings a change of pace as the ship docks in Mohacs, your gateway to the city of Pecs. Towering cliffs close in around the Danube, while mist clings to the water and the colossal stone face of Decebalus, Romania’s last King, looms from the rockface. It’s a scene that leaves passengers speechless and camera happy.

Finally the cruise ends in Giurgiu, with a transfer to Bucharest, Romania’s eclectic capital. Here, a city tour showcases the Palace of the Parliament, leafy boulevards, and hidden churches – an apt finale to a voyage filled with discovery.
