A solo traveller’s favourite in The Middle East

Touchdown in The Middle East

There’s something exciting about arriving in a new country late at night. It’s quiet, the air feels different, and you’re stepping into the unknown. Flying from Paris to Doha was smooth and comfortable, and even arriving close to midnight, the airport experience was effortless. Hamad International Airport is modern, easy to navigate, and incredibly efficient. Within no time, I was on my way to the hotel via transfer, watching the city lights glide past the window – my first glimpse of Doha’s sleek skyline.

As a solo traveller, that first night matters. I want to know the city feels safe. I want to know getting from A to B is easy. Doha ticked every box.

Staying in the Heart of It: Central Inn Souq Waqif

I checked into the Central Inn Souq Waqif, and honestly, the location is what makes it. Staying near Souq Waqif means you’re in walking distance to one of Doha’s most iconic cultural precincts – full of life, lantern-lit alleyways, and the scent of spices and shisha drifting through the air.

The best part? Even though it’s bustling, it never feels chaotic. It feels curated, safe, and welcoming – especially for someone travelling alone.

An Afternoon of Magic: Half-Day Desert Safari

You can’t come to Qatar without seeing the desert, and my half-day desert safari was a highlight.

One minute you’re leaving the city behind, and the next you’re surrounded by rolling golden dunes that stretch forever. The dune bashing is thrilling and then it slows down into moments of complete stillness, where the desert feels almost silent. I was able to quad bike through the desert which was a highlight. I highly recommend planning your desert safari for the afternoon and seeing the sun set over the golden desert dunes.

It’s adventure, culture, and scenery all in one… and it’s the perfect short experience if you don’t have a full day to spare.

Doha City Tour: Where Old Meets Ultra-Modern

Back in Doha, I joined a city tour to get my bearings (and I always recommend this if it’s your first time in a destination to get the lay of the land).

Doha has this fascinating contrast, and something I haven’t seen before – traditional cultural spaces alongside futuristic architecture. One moment you’re wandering heritage-style streets, and the next you’re driving past gleaming skyscrapers that look like they belong in a sci-fi movie. A perfect balance of old and new.

There’s so much to appreciate in Doha – it’s clean, organised, and beautifully designed. You can feel that it’s a city that’s proud of what it is and where it’s headed.

The Food Alone Is Worth the Trip

Now let’s talk about the part I secretly plan entire itineraries around… the food. I truly believe you have to experience authentic local food to really understand the countries culture.

Doha is a dream if you love Middle Eastern flavours. Every meal felt rich and comforting, with warm spices and beautiful presentation. I ate plenty of:

  • hummus and fresh bread (dangerously addictive)

  • grilled meats and kebabs

  • spiced rice dishes

  • sweet baklava and cardamom coffee

Even dining solo felt easy – service is warm, restaurants are welcoming, and it’s common to see people dining casually on their own, especially in Souq Waqif.

Shopping in Souq Waqif: Sensory Overload in the Best Way

If you love shopping (or just browsing), Souq Waqif is everything you want it to be- it’s atmospheric, authentic, and full of character.

You can wander for hours through narrow laneways filled with:

  • spices and dried fruit

  • perfumes and oils

  • jewellery and textiles

  • handmade souvenirs and crafts

It’s one of those places where you walk in for “just a quick look” and walk out two hours later with a bag full of treasures and a new appreciation for how fun shopping can be when it feels cultural.

Solo Travel in Doha: Safe, Secure, and Comfortable

I’ll be honest – a lot of my clients ask about safety when it comes to the Middle East, especially solo travellers. And after experiencing Doha firsthand, I can confidently say: Doha is one of the safest cities I’ve visited.

The streets are well-lit, public areas feel secure, locals are respectful, and the overall environment is calm. Even walking around Souq Waqif at night felt comfortable – not once did I feel uneasy or out of place. And that’s something I don’t say lightly.

Doha is one of those destinations that surprises you. It’s not just a stopover city – it’s a place worth travelling for. With a blend of culture, desert landscapes, incredible food, and high-end shopping, it’s ideal for:

  • solo travellers wanting a safe cultural escape

  • couples looking for something different

  • anyone needing a short, fascinating add-on to Europe.

If you’re flying to or from Europe, it’s a brilliant short escape that feels completely different to anything nearby – and yet incredibly accessible.

Chile with Chimu Adventures

Welcome to South America

Having never travelled to South America, seeing the Andes Mountain range as we landed in Santiago set the precedent for my amazing adventure in Chile with Chimu Adventures. Our driver greeted us with a warm “Bienvenidos!” and before I knew it, we were winding through the scenic Maipo Valley toward our home for the next two nights, Casa Real Hotel, nestled right in the heart of the Santa Rita Estate.

Andes Mountains

Landing in Santiago with the sun glinting on the Andes Mountains

Santa Rita Winery

As we arrived, the 19th-century mansion stood proudly among rows of vines, it felt like stepping into a painting! After check-in, I took a slow wander through the estate grounds, admiring the old chapel and breathing in that unmistakable vineyard scent. Dinner that evening was cozy and unhurried- delicious Chilean fare steaks paired with Santa Rita’s Signature Carmenère. The perfect start to our Chilean adventure.

Winemaker for the day

Our first days agenda: becoming a winemaker. I mean, how often do you get to blend your own wine in one of Chile’s most iconic vineyards? After much sampling we got to make our own wine. It was hands-on, messy, and so much fun followed by Lunch at the renowned Restaurante Doña Paula and a leisurely afternoon before heading North.

Dom the Wine Maker

From Wine Country to the Atacama Desert

Leaving the lush Maipo Valley behind, we boarded a short flight north to Calama, gateway to the Atacama Desert. The change in scenery was striking, from vineyards and greenery to vast, ochre-coloured landscapes stretching toward the Andes. The drive to San Pedro was mesmerizing, volcanic peaks in the distance, dizzying heights, at points travelling over 4500 metres above sea level.

Our home for 3 nights- Tierra Atacama, A Bailey Property, exactly what I love in a boutique property- modern design, natural materials, and that balance between adventure and luxury. All inclusive, including day tours – what better place to spend time in the desert.

Tierra Atacama

Overlooking the Andean range and Licancabur Volcano, this retreat offers a luxurious base immersed in the spirit of the altiplano.

Valle de la Luna

Our first day’s adventure we drove through the incredible valley of the moon, past white craters of salt, rusty red rock cliff faces and perfect sand dunes. Feeling adventurous, we climbed up a steep path, attempting to grip onto crumbling rocks to reach another incredible viewpoint. As I looked out, it really was like being on another planet.

The Atacama Desert is one of the best stargazing spots on earth and it didn’t disappoint that night. Using the hotels telescope and guided by experts we learnt about the constellations and planets even able to see Saturns rings.

Valle De La Luna

One of the Atacama Desert’s most iconic landscapes, Moon Valley features dramatic rock formations, salt-crusted ground, and unforgettable sunsets.

The High Plateau

Early next morning we headed to El Tatio Geysers, high in the mountains. The drive was breathtaking rust and ochre valleys changing to turquoise lagoons in the snow. Watching steam rise as the sun crept over the Andes was pure magic. The earth hissed and bubbled all around us- an incredible reminder of how alive our planet is.

Geysers El Tatio

In the Chilean Alitplano there are over 80 geysers – third largest and highest geothermal field in the world.

Flamingos in the Atacarma

From the mountains to the high altitude salt flats – we continued on to Los Flamencos National reserve, a home to many variety of Flamingo – Andean, Chilean and James Species – all with unique adaptations allowing the Atacama Desert flamingos to flourish, such as a special gland located behind the eyes. It enables the birds to process and drink salt water and tough skin allows them to drink hot spring water that is near boiling point. These physical attributes are vital when living in an environment dotted with volcanoes and salt flat, it was a fascinating way to spend the end of an amazing day of ever changing landscapes.

Return to the City

I wasn’t quite ready to leave the desert, but Santiago was calling. After breakfast and one last walk around the property, I packed my bags and joined the group transfer back to Calama Airport. Tierra Atacama sent us off with a boxed lunch (and hugs from the staff. By the afternoon, I was back in Santiago, Chile’s vibrant capital. Nestled between snow-capped mountains and the coastal range, it’s a city that feels both European and distinctly Latin American. My hotel, Hotel Magnolia, was all elegance -contemporary design housed in a restored mansion. That evening, I ventured into Barrio Lastarria, a bohemian neighborhood full of restaurants, galleries, and late-night energy. Over dinner at a lively local spot, I sipped Chilean Carmenere and thought about how beautifully diverse this country is – from desert moonscapes to city lights, all in one week.

Santiago

The colourful city of Valparaiso

The next day a  private tour whisked us West to Valparaíso, Chile’s legendary port city and UNESCO World Heritage site. The drive alone -through green hills and small coastal towns was stunning, but nothing could prepare me for the riot of color that is Valparaíso. Houses in every shade imaginable tumble down the hills toward the Pacific. Street art adorns almost every wall- bold, political, playful, deeply personal.

We took funiculars up steep hills, wandered through narrow lanes, and sampled street food as we went. I loved how alive the city felt raw and creative, full of stories. That night, we returned to Santiago for a special private dining experience. A local chef guided us through Chile’s culinary regions with perfectly paired wines.

Farewell to Chile, thank you Chimu Adventures

Our last day was exploring Santiago, a guided city tour, a wonderful mix of old and new Santiago. The Plaza de Armas, the elegant Metropolitan Cathedral, the leafy streets of Bellas Artes -each revealed another layer of Chile’s history. The most memorable part of the day, though, was a ceramic workshop with Mapuche artist Fabiola Leman. She spoke about clay not just as art, but as a connection to ancestry and identity.

We ended with a farewell lunch, sharing hugs and promises to return. Chile had surprised me its contrasts, its warmth, its rhythm. As our driver took us to the airport, I looked out at the Andes one last time, glowing in the evening light, and thought: I can’t wait to send my clients here and it must be with Chimu Adventures.

Majestic Mekong: A Travelmarvel Journey

We arrived in Cambodia quietly, almost effortlessly. One moment we were stepping off the plane, and the next we were gliding through the streets toward the Shinta Mani Angkor Hotel, wrapped in Travelmarvel’s seamless care. The hotel felt like a soft exhale after a long journey — elegant, calm, and welcoming in a way that instantly told us we were in good hands. This was not just accommodation; it was the beginning of something meaningful.

Shinta Mani Hotel

Unwinding in serenity at the beautiful Shinta Mani Angkor hotel

After a refreshing shower and a beautiful seafood lunch, jet lag faded into anticipation. I set out alone on a private tour to Angkor Wat, unsure of how deeply this place would move me. The temples seemed to breathe history. Time slowed as I wandered through hidden corridors and towering ruins, listening to stories of the Khmer Empire echo through stone walls etched with intricate carvings. Smiling faces stared out from ancient towers, their serenity unchanged by centuries. Massive tree roots wrapped themselves around crumbling walls, nature reclaiming what humans once built. Every step felt like walking through an ancient story still being written. Angkor Wat doesn’t just impress you — it stays with you.

Angkor Wat 3

A moment of wonder among the temples of Angkor Wat

The following day, we boarded Travelmarvel’s Majestic Mekong River Cruise, drifting into a journey that would reveal both beauty and heartbreak. As we visited villages along the river, stories emerged — of survival, loss, and resilience.

The ship itself felt like an extension of the destination, with its Asian-inspired design and welcoming spaces — the sundeck, the lounge, the quiet comfort of the library. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying a spa treatment, or laughing through hands-on classes like spring roll making and fruit carving, there was a perfect balance between activity and rest. And through it all, the crew shared stories of their families, their lives along the river, their home.

Standing inside S-21, a former school turned prison, the silence was overwhelming. Classrooms had become cells. Chalkboards were replaced by chains. Over 20,000 people were imprisoned here; only 12 survived. The air felt thick with grief. Knowing that two survivors are still alive today — that their voices sometimes echo through these halls — made the experience unbearingly real. This wasn’t ancient history. This happened within a lifetime.

At the Killing Fields, we walked slowly along wooden paths through land that carries unspeakable pain. Beneath our feet were mass graves. The guide spoke softly, yet every word landed hard. Men, women, children — even babies — were lost here. No one was spared. Tears came easily. And yet, amidst the sorrow, there was something else: respect, remembrance, and the unbreakable spirit of the Cambodian people. This history is devastating — and it must never be forgotten.

Survivors Killing Fields

As the river carried us onward, the mood gently shifted. On day seven, we crossed into Vietnam, boarding a traditional sampan that glided across calm waters toward Sa Dec. Floating farms and riverside homes passed us by, houses built to surrender to floods rather than fight them. Life here bends to the river’s rhythm. Walking through the local market later that day, I was surrounded by colour, noise, laughter, and the scent of fresh produce. It was vibrant and alive — a beautiful contrast to the heaviness of days before.

Local Woman

Eight days on Travelmarvels  Majestic Mekong journey passed far too quickly. This journey had everything — peaceful villages, bustling towns, breathtaking landscapes — but what truly set it apart was the ease. No frantic early mornings. No constant packing and unpacking. Just waking each day knowing Travelmarvel had thought of everything.

This journey with Travelmarvel was more than a cruise.
It was a passage through history, culture, heartbreak, and hope.
A deep dive into the vibrant heart of Southeast Asia — one I will carry with me forever.

Angkor Wat – timeless and powerful

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and Cambodia’s most iconic site. Built in the early 12th century near Siem Reap, it was originally a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and later became a Buddhist place of worship.

Famous for its grand towers, vast moat, and detailed stone carvings, Angkor Wat symbolises the heart of the ancient Khmer Empire and remains a powerful national and spiritual symbol today.

The UNESCO World Heritage site, stretching over 400 square kms, contains Angkor Wat and over 100 other temples.  Angkor Wat is absolutely stunning and a sight to see.

Temples of Angkor – Ta Prohm (Tomb Raider Temple)

Ta Prohm, nicknamed the Tomb Raider Temple, showcases the jungle taking over.   It is one of the largest temple complexes built during the Khmer Empire.  Giant silk-cotton and strangler fig trees stand tall with their vast root systems strangling the surviving stone walls, merging beautifully with the temples’ architecture.

The 2001, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie (with Angelina Jolie) was set within the Angkor Thom temple complex, and I knew when watching the movie, it was a place I needed to experience… it does not disappoint.

Breathtakingly beautiful and worth an early visit before the crowds.

Beng Mealea – Indiana Jones vibes

For an authentic jungle temple ruin, Beng Mealea is a spectacular sight to behold, located 68kms northeast of Siem Reap.

Beng Mealea was the original design of Angkor Wat.  Unfortunately, it is now seriously damaged due primarily to natural degradation and collapse, with no restoration works taking place, like at the temples of Angkor.

Peaceful and without the crowds, it is the ultimate Indiana Jones experience.  Nature has well and truly run riot with massive trees and their muscular root systems holding on tight, with destructive love.

Tonle’ Sap – Kampong Phluk Stilted Village

Tonlé Sap, is Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake.  Designated in 1997 as a significant Biosphere Reserve for its vital ecosystem and cultural importance to millions of people in Cambodia.

Floating villages shift with the water levels, and life adapts in fascinating ways. Homes, schools, and shops all move with the seasons.

We explored the Kampong Phluk floating village, passing houses on stilts, small shops, and children paddling to school.  It is real daily life here and unfiltered, giving travellers a clearer understanding of how closely life here is tied to the lake.  Friendly kids were keen to practice their English and had many questions for me.

Serenity with locals on our mangrove tour.  Gliding through narrow channels lined with mangroves was calm and surprisingly peaceful after the busier temple days.

Hidden Corners of China

I have finally had the opportunity to visit China on a ten-day journey, and as a first-time traveller to a destination like this, I can confidently say that using a trusted tour company such as MW Tours is highly recommended.

Rather than visiting the usual, well-known cities, my first trip to China took me off the beaten path and I am so glad it did. I began my journey flying into the Suzhou region, before travelling through a series of lesser visited yet fascinating cities including Zhangjiagang, Xinghua, Taizhou, Yangzhou, Nanjing, and finishing in the beautiful city of Hangzhou.

Below, I share my experience for anyone interested in embarking on a similar journey through this remarkable part of China.

Hot Tips from My China Trip

Food & Beverage:

  • Most hotel breakfasts were Chinese-style with limited Western options

  • Lunches and dinners were mostly traditional Chinese banquet-style, featuring shared dishes of local specialties like duck blood soup, duck tongue, chicken feet, baby octopus, hairy crabs, river snails, roasted duck heads, pig ears, pork belly, braised beef, dumplings, and plenty of fried rice.

  • Hot pot dinners at night markets were fun and interactive, and Western fast food chains (McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks) were also available nearby.

  • The banquet-style meals offered exotic dishes as a way of welcoming guests. If you prefer familiar foods like sweet and sour pork, fried rice, noodles, or beef in black bean sauce, you can sit in regular restaurant seating rather than the reserved banquet rooms.

Experiences & Activities:

  • Cruises along the rivers and lakes were unforgettable. Highlights included Jinling Traditional Town, Niushou Mountain, Li Zhong Water Forest, and Qianduo Scenic Area with its wildflower fields.

  • Activities suit a broad range of travellers: families and children will love the Water Forest and Qianduo Scenic Area, while history and culture enthusiasts will appreciate temples, ancient streets, gardens, and tea experiences.

  • The itinerary is perfect for those looking to combine culture, nature, and hands-on local experiences.

The best travel agents are travellers themselves, and that experience makes all the difference. Don’t just rely on guidebooks or online reviews, at Chrin Park Travel, we’ve been there, seen it, and know the spots that will make your trip unforgettable.

From hidden cafés off the beaten path to secret beaches and off-the-beaten-track attractions, we share the kind of insider knowledge you won’t find online. We love helping people avoid the tourist traps and experience the authentic local culture of each destination.

Travel deals you won’t find on Google

Great travel agents don’t just book trips. They unlock perks and experiences you won’t find on any search engine.

We have exclusive access to early check-ins, private tours, and unexpected upgrades that make a trip feel incredibly special. And it’s not only about saving money, it’s about improving your entire travel experience, by adding comfort, convenience, and memorable touches that go beyond the ordinary.

At Chirn Park Travel, we leverage our strong relationships with hotels, cruise lines, and airlines to bring these exclusive benefits to our clients every day.

Planning without the stress or the headache

The best travel agents take care of all the little details so you don’t have to. Things like coordinating transfers, managing visa paperwork, or making sure connections line up perfectly.

Whether it’s flights that match early hotel check-ins or trains that connect when you need them to, these tiny details make a huge difference to your overall experience.

Travel support every step of your journey

Who do you turn to when you book your trip online? When you book through a reputable travel agent, like Chirn Park Travel, we’re here for you during your trip. Whether it’s sudden changes, lost luggage or a last-minute itinerary change due to bad weather, we can help.
