Icebergs, Wildlife & the Adventure of a Lifetime

Expedition cruising to Antarctica is one of those rare, life-changing experiences. A destination so raw, remote, and breathtaking that it almost feels unreal until you’re standing there yourself.

As a Travel Advisor, I’ve helped clients plan incredible adventures all over the world, but experiencing Antarctica firsthand gave me a completely new appreciation for our planet, and the magic of true exploration through expedition cruising.

First Impressions: Entering Another World

Anticipation built from the moment our expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen, started crossing the Drake Passage. With every hour at sea we drew closer to the Great White Continent.

We were lucky enough to experience what seasoned travelers call a “Drake Lake” on our 2-day journey south. With sunny skies, smooth sailing, and surprisingly calm conditions for one of the world’s most notorious crossings.  By day 3, the atmosphere shifted completely. A thick mist rolled in, temperatures dropped sharply, and suddenly Antarctica felt very real. There was a sense of excitement throughout the ship as we approached the ice for the first time.

Wildlife & the Lemaire Channel

Our first landing was at the Yalour Islands, home to an Adélie penguin colony.

Seeing penguins in the wild was incredible enough, but Antarctica quickly reminded us that nature here is raw and untamed. Right before our eyes, a leopard seal hunted a penguin – a dramatic and unforgettable glimpse into the circle of life in this remote wilderness.

That evening, we cruised through the spectacular Lemaire Channel, often described as one of the most beautiful passages in Antarctica. I genuinely stood on deck speechless, surrounded by enormous icebergs and towering snow-covered mountains disappearing into the clouds. It was one of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever seen and this alone will forever be etched in my memory.

Antarctica Makes the Rules

One thing you quickly learn in Antarctica is that nature is always in charge. We had hoped to visit Port Lockroy – famously nicknamed the “Penguin Post Office” but 83 knot winds had other plans. Instead, our expedition team adjusted course and we landed at Damoy Point.

This turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip as I joined the Adventure Kayaking excursion. Paddling silently through the inky black, icy waters while Gentoo penguins darted nearby was surreal. The silence was almost overwhelming, broken only by the gentle splash of my paddle and the occasional crack as I hit small, hardened ice pieces. Although the experience was breathtaking, I would be lying if I didn’t mention the deep sense of fear I felt. Being so close to the water and looking down into the dark, endless depths beneath me, I couldn’t help but wonder what might be lurking below. Thoughts of how remote and unforgiving the environment was made my heart race – fear, adrenaline, and awe made for an unforgettable experience.

Whales, Ice & ‘Bergy Bits’

Wilhelmina Bay delivered one of the wildlife highlights of the trip.

We boarded Zodiacs to scout for whales, and before long we were surrounded by the blows and movements of humpbacks nearby. Watching these enormous creatures’ surface nearby our Zodiac was an unforgettable experience. Additionally, we learnt that every humpback whale has uniquely patterned markings on the underside of its fluke (tail), almost like a fingerprint. By sharing photos, we can contribute to ongoing whale research and monitoring, helping scientists track individual whales and better understand their movements through platforms such as HappyWhale.com

Later, at Chiriguano Bay, we navigated through dense floating ice caused by active glacier calving.

Our expedition guides were phenomenal throughout the journey. Knowledgeable, entertaining, and deeply passionate about Antarctica. Even while weaving through floating ‘bergy bits’, they managed to turn every outing into an unforgettable learning experience.

Landing on the Antarctic Continent

This was one of the biggest moments of the expedition: stepping foot on the Antarctic continent itself at Neko Harbour.

The bay was filled with humpback whales “logging” (aka resting peacefully at the surface) whilst glaciers towered around us in every direction.

Earlier that day, during a Citizen Science boat excursion at Skontorp Cove, we witnessed a massive avalanche crashing down a distant mountain. It was thrilling, humbling, and a reminder of just how powerful Antarctica truly is.

The Unexpected Luxury of Expedition Cruising

Many people imagine Antarctica expeditions as rugged or uncomfortable, but HX struck the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.

After returning from icy Zodiac excursions, it was wonderful to enjoy warm lounges, excellent dining, comfortable cabins, and panoramic views from almost every corner of the ship. My favourite? Sinking into the hot jacuzzi surrounded by crisp Antarctic air, followed by the warmth of the panoramic sauna – all whilst the frozen landscape drifted by. The perfect way to end each day! This was adventure travel without sacrificing comfort or service.
