Relaxed Elegance at Sea: From Venice to Barcelona on Queen Victoria

One look at Queen Victoria and the excitement became very real

Some holidays are about the destination. This one was just as much about the journey.

Our adventure began with a night in Venice, wandering canals, crossing charming bridges, and enjoying long Italian dinners as gondolas drifted by. It was the perfect introduction to what would become an unforgettable Mediterranean voyage.

The next morning, we transferred to Trieste, where Queen Victoria awaited. Seeing her for the first time was a special moment. Before long, we were onboard with a welcome drink in hand, ready to set sail.

Queen Victoria

The Beautiful Queen Victoria

A Perfect Blend of Sea Days and Shore Days

From day one, what struck me most was how relaxed everything felt. Despite travelling during the busy June season, the ship never felt crowded. There were always sunbeds available, peaceful corners to escape with a book, and endless sea views to enjoy. The sea days quickly became some of my favourite memories.

Each port brought something unique. We explored the coastal charm of Zadar, walked the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, admired the rich history and grand architecture of Valletta, and soaked up the sunshine and vibrant atmosphere of Palma de Mallorca. Every destination offered its own character and charm, while Queen Victoria provided a beautiful home between adventures.

Classic Cunard, Modern Fun

Life onboard was equally memorable. Cunard’s famous Afternoon Tea became a favourite ritual, whether enjoying warm scones and live music in the Queens Room or indulging in Champagne Afternoon Tea in The Verandah. The Gala Evenings added a touch of glamour without feeling formal or intimidating. Whether guests embraced the Red & Gold and Roaring Twenties themes or kept things simple, everyone felt comfortable.

There was always something happening onboard too from trivia competitions, live bands, talented musicians, karaoke, silent discos, and even football matches shown on the big screens. The atmosphere was lively when you wanted it to be, yet always relaxed and welcoming.

Is Cunard Too Formal? My Honest Take

Before this voyage, I’ll admit I had some preconceived ideas and beliefs about Cunard. Like many people, I envisioned ballgowns every evening, strict dress codes, and a cruise experience that might feel a little out of my comfort zone.

What I found was something completely different and far more enjoyable.

Yes, Cunard is elegant. The ships are beautiful, the service is exceptional, and there are lovely traditions like Afternoon Tea and Gala Evenings. But what surprised me most was how relaxed and welcoming it all felt.

There was never any pressure to dress a certain way or participate in every formal event. Some guests embraced the glamour of Gala Nights, while others simply dressed smartly and enjoyed the atmosphere. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying a trivia quiz, sipping champagne at afternoon tea, or dancing at the silent disco, everyone felt comfortable being themselves.

What Cunard offers isn’t stuffy formality, it’s a sense of occasion. It’s about enjoying the finer things at your own pace, without feeling judged or out of place.

And if you’re worried about needing a ballgown every night, don’t be. Just bring your sense of adventure and be prepared to relax in style while receiving exception true Cunard White Star Service.

Scotland’s Historic Charm & Highland Wildlife

Our first ports of call showcased the beauty and character of Scotland. From the historic streets of Edinburgh to the rugged coastlines of Invergordon and the Shetland Islands, every stop offered something unique. One of the highlights was meeting Scotland’s famous Highland cows, affectionately known as “hairy coos”, whose shaggy coats and gentle nature made for a memorable Scottish experience.

Norway’s Stunning Coastal Beauty

Crossing the North Sea, we arrived in Norway, where dramatic fjords, colourful villages and stunning coastal scenery awaited. The highlight was undoubtedly Ålesund, renowned for its striking Art Nouveau architecture and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding islands and waterways. The scenery throughout this part of the voyage was simply breathtaking and perfectly showcased the natural beauty of Scandinavia.

Chasing the Ice: Antarctica Expedition with HX

Icebergs, Wildlife & the Adventure of a Lifetime

Expedition cruising to Antarctica is one of those rare, life-changing experiences. A destination so raw, remote, and breathtaking that it almost feels unreal until you’re standing there yourself.

As a Travel Advisor, I’ve helped clients plan incredible adventures all over the world, but experiencing Antarctica firsthand gave me a completely new appreciation for our planet, and the magic of true exploration through expedition cruising.

First Impressions: Entering Another World

Anticipation built from the moment our expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen, started crossing the Drake Passage. With every hour at sea we drew closer to the Great White Continent.

We were lucky enough to experience what seasoned travelers call a “Drake Lake” on our 2-day journey south. With sunny skies, smooth sailing, and surprisingly calm conditions for one of the world’s most notorious crossings.  By day 3, the atmosphere shifted completely. A thick mist rolled in, temperatures dropped sharply, and suddenly Antarctica felt very real. There was a sense of excitement throughout the ship as we approached the ice for the first time.

Wildlife & the Lemaire Channel

Our first landing was at the Yalour Islands, home to an Adélie penguin colony.

Seeing penguins in the wild was incredible enough, but Antarctica quickly reminded us that nature here is raw and untamed. Right before our eyes, a leopard seal hunted a penguin – a dramatic and unforgettable glimpse into the circle of life in this remote wilderness.

That evening, we cruised through the spectacular Lemaire Channel, often described as one of the most beautiful passages in Antarctica. I genuinely stood on deck speechless, surrounded by enormous icebergs and towering snow-covered mountains disappearing into the clouds. It was one of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever seen and this alone will forever be etched in my memory.

Antarctica Makes the Rules

One thing you quickly learn in Antarctica is that nature is always in charge. We had hoped to visit Port Lockroy – famously nicknamed the “Penguin Post Office” but 83 knot winds had other plans. Instead, our expedition team adjusted course and we landed at Damoy Point.

This turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip as I joined the Adventure Kayaking excursion. Paddling silently through the inky black, icy waters while Gentoo penguins darted nearby was surreal. The silence was almost overwhelming, broken only by the gentle splash of my paddle and the occasional crack as I hit small, hardened ice pieces. Although the experience was breathtaking, I would be lying if I didn’t mention the deep sense of fear I felt. Being so close to the water and looking down into the dark, endless depths beneath me, I couldn’t help but wonder what might be lurking below. Thoughts of how remote and unforgiving the environment was made my heart race – fear, adrenaline, and awe made for an unforgettable experience.

Whales, Ice & ‘Bergy Bits’

Wilhelmina Bay delivered one of the wildlife highlights of the trip.

We boarded Zodiacs to scout for whales, and before long we were surrounded by the blows and movements of humpbacks nearby. Watching these enormous creatures’ surface nearby our Zodiac was an unforgettable experience. Additionally, we learnt that every humpback whale has uniquely patterned markings on the underside of its fluke (tail), almost like a fingerprint. By sharing photos, we can contribute to ongoing whale research and monitoring, helping scientists track individual whales and better understand their movements through platforms such as HappyWhale.com

Later, at Chiriguano Bay, we navigated through dense floating ice caused by active glacier calving.

Our expedition guides were phenomenal throughout the journey. Knowledgeable, entertaining, and deeply passionate about Antarctica. Even while weaving through floating ‘bergy bits’, they managed to turn every outing into an unforgettable learning experience.

Landing on the Antarctic Continent

This was one of the biggest moments of the expedition: stepping foot on the Antarctic continent itself at Neko Harbour.

The bay was filled with humpback whales “logging” (aka resting peacefully at the surface) whilst glaciers towered around us in every direction.

Earlier that day, during a Citizen Science boat excursion at Skontorp Cove, we witnessed a massive avalanche crashing down a distant mountain. It was thrilling, humbling, and a reminder of just how powerful Antarctica truly is.

The Unexpected Luxury of Expedition Cruising

Many people imagine Antarctica expeditions as rugged or uncomfortable, but HX struck the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.

After returning from icy Zodiac excursions, it was wonderful to enjoy warm lounges, excellent dining, comfortable cabins, and panoramic views from almost every corner of the ship. My favourite? Sinking into the hot jacuzzi surrounded by crisp Antarctic air, followed by the warmth of the panoramic sauna – all whilst the frozen landscape drifted by. The perfect way to end each day! This was adventure travel without sacrificing comfort or service.

Travelling with HX made this journey even more meaningful – with their incredible expedition team, scientific knowledge, and a genuine passion for the region. They have created an experience that felt immersive, educational, and incredibly personal. This wasn’t simply sightseeing from a ship – it was true exploration.

Is Antarctica Worth It?

Without hesitation: yes.

This journey reinforced why I love helping people travel. Some destinations entertain you, others change you – Antarctica does both!

Antarctica is not simply another destination to tick off a bucket list. It’s an emotional experience that stays with you long after you return home. It reminds you how extraordinary our planet truly is. For travelers seeking something beyond a traditional holiday – something immersive, meaningful, and unforgettable, Antarctica delivers in every possible way!

If Antarctica has ever been on your bucket list, my advice is simple: go. And go with a company like HX that truly understands expedition travel.

3 Signs You’ve Found an Experienced Gold Coast Travel Agent

A Scottish and Nordic Voyage – Oceania Cruises

Anyone can book a flight online, but booking a holiday that’s going to be one to remember is a totally different matter. That’s where a great travel agency makes all the difference.

As experienced Gold Coast travel agents, we speak to a lot of people who come to us after spending hours researching destinations, comparing prices, and trying to piece together complicated itineraries themselves. And they feel overwhelmed.

So, how do you know you’ve found a great travel agency?

They take the time to understand you

The key to planning a great holiday is understanding exactly what a traveller wants. Great travel agents don’t begin by recommending random destinations, they start by asking questions. What kind of traveller are you? Who are you traveling with? Booking a luxury holiday or an adventure?

At Chirn Park Travel, everything starts with gaining an understanding of your travel style, budget and goals. Each one of our clients is so different, so no holiday should feel like a cookie-cutter package. We tailor it to you!

Real experience and ongoing support

If we were asked, “What is one of the greatest benefits of booking a holiday with a travel agent?”, we’d say it’s having access to genuine experience.

Our team has collectively travelled to more than 125 countries and brings over 300 years of combined industry experience to every booking. We’ve stayed in the hotels, sailed on the cruises, toured the destinations, and built relationships with trusted suppliers around the world.

What does this knowledge mean? It helps us recommend experiences that we can vouch for and ones that genuinely suit your needs, rather than what’s currently popular online.

From the moment you book until you return home, you have your Chirn Park Travel agent available if plans change or unexpected issues arise. You have access to support before, during, and after your trip – our service doesn’t stop at the booking.

Why travellers choose Chirn Park Travel
