Colors of Provence: Rhône River Cruise with AmaWaterways

Sailing Through Provence with AmaWaterways

In November 2025, I was lucky enough to go on my first river cruise with AmaWaterways aboard the AmaKristina, sailing from Lyon to Arles on their Colors of Provence itinerary, before continuing on to Aix-en-Provence and Nice for a couple of extra days.

If you’re looking for an easy way to see multiple parts of France without constantly packing and unpacking, this is honestly one of the best ways to do it.

I’ll be honest, river cruising was never really on my radar, but this trip completely converted me.

From Lyon’s Food Markets to Christmas Magic

We started in Lyon, known as the food capital of France, and it definitely lived up to the reputation. From the famous Les Halles market to the Christmas markets, there was food everywhere. Cheese, pastries, fresh produce, wine and some of the biggest oysters you’ve ever seen… it’s a great place to begin any French holiday.

Visiting at the end of November turned out to be a great time to go, especially with the Christmas markets starting to come alive. The markets added something really special to the trip, with each location offering its own Christmas theme and atmosphere. We visited markets in Lyon, Aix-en-Provence and Nice, all filled with festive decorations, ornaments, local food, and plenty of mulled wine. Noel Nice Christmas Markets were by far the biggest and most impressive.

The AmaKristina Experience

Once onboard the AmaKristina, everything just felt easy. Our twin balcony cabin was comfortable and well laid out, with views straight over the Rhône. It was the perfect place to unwind between each stop.

The ship has a relaxed feel, not too big and not too formal, just a really nice space to come back to at the end of the day. The crew were amazing throughout the whole trip, always friendly, attentive and genuinely welcoming.

A big mention to our Cruise Director Antonio, who kept everything running smoothly and made each day easy to follow, and also to our wonderful AmaWaterways host Ian, who made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and looked after us the entire time.

The Ease of Exploring with AmaWaterways

Dining was another highlight. Meals are made using fresh local ingredients from each region, and there is no shortage of great food or wine. The Chef’s Table dining experience was a standout and well worth trying.

There was also plenty to do onboard while we were sailing, with things like music trivia, wine tastings from the local regions, and gelato taste testing. The evenings were just as enjoyable, with special guest performers and great music played by our musical host Roberto, often finishing the night with a bit of dancing.

It’s the kind of travel where everything is taken care of, so you can just relax and enjoy where you are each day.

As we cruised south, each stop was different. One of the great things with AmaWaterways is that shore excursions are included, so you simply choose what suits you best each day.

Beaujolais, River Locks and Mistral Winds

In the Beaujolais region in Lyon we visited a winery and enjoyed the beautiful countryside, then back on board we continued along the Rhône, passing through the many river locks, which was really interesting to watch and experience.

Further down the river, we had the mistral winds come through, which definitely made things a bit colder than expected, but it added to the adventure and helped with getting our steps in to warm up.

Steam Trains, Scenic Views and Unexpected Adventures

In Vienne, we explored a quieter town with plenty of history, and in Tournon we took a scenic steam train through the Gorges du Doux. This turned into a bit of an unexpected adventure when a large tree had fallen across the tracks. The train crew quickly stepped in with a chainsaw on hand, cut up the tree so we could continue on our way, definitely a memorable moment.

The Best Way to Explore Avignon

Avignon was a mix of activity, history and fashion. We started the day with a bike ride around part of the island before heading into town to explore.

It’s a great way to see a bit more than you would on foot.

Arles: A Grand Finale in Provence

Our final stop was Arles, a city full of character and history, famous for inspiring the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. Exploring the old town and Roman Amphitheatre was a great way to finish the cruise, along with the Carrières des Lumières art display, where a former quarry has been transformed into an immersive show of images set to music, followed by a quick visit to Les Baux de Provence, a small quaint village perched on top of a hill.

Views were breathtaking, and the mistral winds literally took your breath away!

Why Aix-en-Provence Deserves More Than a Day

After the cruise, we said our goodbyes to the wonderful AmaWaterways crew and the special friendships we made and headed by train to Aix-en-Provence.

It’s a beautiful, relaxed town with plenty of cafes and restaurants, the most divine ‘Faux Gras’ with markets and little streets to wander, perfect for slowing things down, especially with a hot chocolate stop along the way.

One day here was definitely not enough!

The French Riviera: A Fitting Finale

We finished in Nice on the French Riviera. Even with limited time, it’s easy to see why people love this part of France.

The coastline, the food, and the atmosphere made it a great way to end the trip.

The Perfect Way to Explore Europe: The AmaWaterways Difference

What stood out most about this trip was how easy everything was. Once you’re onboard with AmaWaterways, everything is taken care of. Excursions, meals, and daily plans are all organised, so you can just enjoy the journey.

I can honestly say I would highly recommend AmaWaterways to anyone considering a river cruise. The level of service, inclusions and overall quality make it a fantastic way to see Europe.

Antarctica with HX: A World beyond words

An Experience Beyond Expectation

Antarctica is one of those rare places that stops you in your tracks, not just for its beauty, but for the sheer scale and stillness of it. It’s vast, untouched, and humbling in a way that’s difficult to put into words. A destination that doesn’t just impress you, it quietly shifts your perspective.

My recent expedition with HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) on their Highlights of Antarctica itinerary, sailing onboard the MS Roald Amundsen, was nothing short of extraordinary. It wasn’t just the landscapes or the wildlife, it was the way the entire journey unfolded, layered with meaning, knowledge, and moments that genuinely stayed with me.

This is not a traditional cruise. It’s an experience built around exploration, understanding, and connection, both to the destination and to the environment itself.

Icebergs of the Lamaire Channel

Icebergs of the Lamaire Channel

The Journey South

The journey began in Buenos Aires, before flying south to Ushuaia, a place often referred to as the end of the world. From Ushuaia, we set sail across the legendary Drake Passage. A crossing that’s often spoken about with a mix of caution and curiosity, known as either the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake,” depending on conditions. I was incredibly fortunate to experience the latter!

The seas were calm and glassy, stretching endlessly around us and making for a pretty surreal start to the journey. It allowed time to settle in, to absorb the anticipation, and to begin understanding just how remote and remarkable this part of the world really is.

These days at sea were far from just a crossing. They were an introduction, not just to Antarctica, but to the philosophy behind HX. The Expedition Team began to layer the experience with knowledge through briefings, wildlife insights, and storytelling, that transformed what lay ahead into something far more meaningful.

Tip: Even if you’re lucky enough to experience a “Drake Lake,” conditions can change quickly and it’s always better to be prepared, so is worth packing seasickness tablets just in case! better to be safe than sorry I always say.

Experiencing Antarctica

Arriving in Antarctica is something you never forget. Towering icebergs, vast glaciers, and a stillness that’s difficult to put into words set the scene from the very beginning. Each day unfolds differently, shaped by the conditions, with landings and zodiac cruises taking you deep into this untouched environment.

Wildlife encounters are constant and incredibly special. You might find yourself walking among colonies of penguins, from curious Gentoo to the striking Chinstrap, watching them go about their day, completely unfazed by your presence. Out on the water, whales surface nearby, sometimes so close you can hear the breath as they rise. Seals can often be seen resting on drifting ice, completely at ease in their surroundings.

It’s the unpredictability of it all that makes it so memorable. One moment you’re quietly taking in the landscape, and the next you’re witnessing wildlife in its most natural, untouched state.

Optional Extras

One of the most memorable parts of the journey was the Discovery Kayaking experience. Moving quietly through the water, surrounded by glaciers and drifting ice, it offered a completely different and deeply peaceful perspective of Antarctica. There’s a stillness to it that you simply don’t get any other way. No engine noise, no distractions, just you, the water, and Antarctica in its purest form. It was easily one of the most peaceful and memorable parts of the entire journey, and something I would highly recommend to anyone considering it.

Tip: Discovery Kayaking has very limited spaces, so it’s important to pre-book this experience well in advance to avoid missing out.

Life Onboard: The Ship, Crew & Expedition Experience

Life onboard strikes the perfect balance between comfort, connection, and purpose. The ship itself is beautifully designed. It’s modern, Scandinavian-inspired, and incredibly comfortable without feeling over the top. Large panoramic windows, cosy lounges, and quiet spaces make it easy to take in the ever-changing scenery, while three dining venues offer a great range of options depending on your mood.

There’s also a beautiful onboard sauna, perfectly positioned with panoramic views, offering a unique way to unwind while taking in the icy landscapes outside.

What truly sets the experience apart, however, is the people. The crew are warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout the journey. At the heart of it all is the Expedition Team, a group of scientists, naturalists, and polar experts who bring Antarctica to life in a way that goes far beyond what you see. Their knowledge, passion, and storytelling add depth to every landing, zodiac cruise, and onboard experience.

Panoramic views in the sauna

Panoramic views in the sauna

The Science Centre further enhances this, offering the opportunity to engage with real research and gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable environment. Experiences like the Science Boat allow you to step beyond observation and feel genuinely connected to the destination.

Evenings onboard are relaxed and reflective, with a natural sense of community forming among guests. It’s less about entertainment, and more about sharing the day’s experiences, reviewing photos, or simply watching the light shift across the ice.

Tip: Pre-book your preferred dining times in Aune and Fredheim, as they fill quickly. Don’t miss the daily briefings and recap sessions, as they add incredible context to your experience. And if the Science Boat is on your list, be sure to book early, as spaces are limited.

A Journey That Stays With You

What makes an expedition with HX so special is the balance it strikes between comfort, education, and genuine exploration. This isn’t about simply ticking Antarctica off a list, it’s about experiencing it in a way that feels meaningful, respectful, and deeply immersive.

Every part of the journey is thoughtfully designed to help you connect, not just with the destination, but with the environment, the wildlife, and the stories that make this place so extraordinary. It’s travel with purpose, and it’s what sets this experience apart.

This wasn’t just a trip.

It was one of the most powerful and humbling journeys I’ve ever had. Antarctica has a way of staying with you, quietly shifting your perspective long after you’ve returned home.
And with HX, you don’t just visit this incredible place… you truly connect with it.

Tip: Go in with an open mind and flexible expectations. Antarctica runs on nature’s schedule, and that unpredictability is part of what makes it so unforgettable.

Discovering Japan: One Mountain at a Time

Discovering Japan: One Mountain at a Time

There’s something incredibly valuable about stepping out from behind the desk and living the product you sell. Recently, I had the opportunity to do exactly that and joined Sno’n’Ski Holidays on a Japan ski trip alongside 30 fellow travel agents, exploring some of the country’s most iconic (and underrated) ski regions.

From powder days to bullet trains and unforgettable mountain experiences, this trip delivered on every level.

We kicked things off flying All Nippon Airways (ANA) from Sydney and it was the perfect start. Smooth, efficient, and consistently high service standards. For clients travelling to Japan, ANA is always a strong recommendation, and this just reinforced that.

Shizukuishi: Authentic Japan & Endless Powder

Our first stop was Shizukuishi Ski Resort in Akita and straight away, we struck gold.

It dumped snow the entire time we were there. Proper, deep, light Japow that just kept coming. The kind of conditions that turn good skiers into great ones and put permanent smiles on everyone’s faces.

Shizukuishi itself is a bit of a hidden gem – Located at the base of Mount Iwate it features wide, quiet runs and who doesn’t love no crowds, no chaos, no lift lines especially on a Pow Day!

It feels authentically Japanese, which is something many clients are now seeking, less commercial, more cultural.

One of the standout experiences here was cat skiing and accessing untouched terrain via snowcat. Fresh tracks every run, deep powder, and that rare feeling of having the mountain to yourself. It’s an incredible opportunity for clients wanting something beyond standard resort skiing without going full backcountry.

Naeba: Big Resort Energy & Incredible Scenery

After experiencing Japan’s iconic Shinkansen (bullet train)- a must-do in itself – we arrived at Naeba, part of the well-known Prince Resorts network.

The contrast to Shizukuishi was immediate. Where Shizukuishi felt quiet and traditional, Naeba delivered a bigger, more vibrant resort experience. It is lively, well-developed, and full of options.

With over 20 dining options, from casual to sit down, access to two mountains Naeba and Kagura which is connected by the famous Dragondola.

The Dragondola itself is something special. I’ve been on plenty of gondolas over the years, but this one stands out. Stretching for kilometres across valleys and mountains, it offers incredible views the entire way, it’s as much an experience as it is transport

Once again, the ski gods delivered. Day one brought fresh powder, followed by a perfect bluebird day. Not only was the terrain incredible the après vibe was great. Naeba really comes alive off the slopes, with a fun, social après scene that rolls from afternoon into the evening – perfect for groups or anyone wanting more than just great skiing.

Stunning views from The Dragondola

Stunning views from The Dragondola

Shiga Kogen: Traditional, Vast & Unspoilt

Next stop was Shiga Kogen, Japan’s largest ski resort and a completely different feel again. Where Naeba is lively and energetic, Shiga Kogen is traditional, expansive, and refreshingly uncrowded. Made up of multiple interconnected ski areas, it offers a true sense of exploration. You’re not just skiing one resort, but an entire alpine region.

What really stands out here is the sheer variety of terrain and the ability to ski from one area to the next without ever feeling rushed or overcrowded. The snow quality is consistently excellent, with light, dry powder and well-groomed runs that suit confident intermediates through to advanced skiers. There’s also a strong focus on nature, with wide-open landscapes, stunning mountain views, and even the chance to spot local wildlife.

Close by you have the Jigokudani Monkey Park where you can watch the famous Snow Monkey’s bathe in the natural hot springs. Perfect for a rest day activity.

Snow Monkeys bathing in Natural Hot Springs

Hakuba: Japan’s most loved ski destination

Hakuba is one of those destinations that consistently exceeds expectations. Nestled in the Japanese Alps, this ski region offers access to multiple resorts on one lift pass, making it ideal for both first-time Japan skiers and seasoned powder chasers. The terrain is incredibly diverse with gentle beginner runs, perfectly groomed cruisers, and some seriously exciting off-piste for the more adventurous.

Accommodation options are just as varied. You’ve got everything from traditional Japanese lodges (ryokans) where you can experience authentic hospitality, to luxury ski-in/ski-out hotels and self-contained apartments perfect for groups. There really is something for everyone in Hakuba.

And then there’s the food. Hakuba’s dining scene is seriously underrated. Think fresh sushi, sizzling wagyu, cosy izakayas, and of course, endless bowls of ramen. Après-ski here isn’t about wild parties (though there are bars if that’s your vibe), it’s more about unwinding, good food, and great company.

Getting there is easier than most expect. A smooth bullet train or bus transfer from Tokyo gets you into the mountains within a few hours, making it a seamless addition to a Japan itinerary. Hakuba is a perfect add on to your Japan itinerary if you have time up your sleeve and want to get back on the skis or try something new.

Unreal views from Iwatake in Hakuba Valley

Unreal views from Iwatake in Hakuba Valley

If Japan has been on your list, now is the perfect time to go. With the Japanese Yen currently offering great value against the Australian Dollar, your money goes that much further.

I’m already planning my next trip – there’s just so much to see and do. From the incredible food and rich culture to the warmth of the people, Japan truly ticks every box. It’s a destination that stays with you, and I can’t wait to return.

Dutch Sights & Belgian Delights Cruise Aboard the Scenic Jewel

Amsterdam was the perfect place to begin this journey. Scenic transferred me to the Renaissance Amsterdam City, which was ideally located for exploring at my own pace. Spring really brought the city to life—tulips were in bloom, markets were busy, and there was an easy energy walking along the canals. I spent my first afternoon visiting the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, two very different but equally memorable experiences. Later, a canal cruise with local cheese and wine was a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

Amsterdam Canals

The canals of Amsterdam run through the city’s historic centre, lined with traditional houses and bridges that reflect its long maritime history.

The next morning, I boarded the Scenic Jewel, my home for the Dutch Sights & Belgian Delights Cruise. The welcome felt relaxed but thoughtful, with freshly made stroopwafels and a glass of champagne. A butler escorted me to my Balcony Suite, which was comfortable and well-appointed, with thoughtful amenities including a mini bar, robes, and slippers that made it easy to settle in straight away. There was also plenty of storage, and suitcases could be neatly stored under the bed, which made unpacking and staying organised very easy. Dining on board was a highlight, with a good variety of options including specialty restaurants, and evenings were nicely rounded out with live local music and entertainment.

Windmills

The iconic windmills of Kinderdijk Windmills, a striking reminder of Dutch history

The itinerary itself had a great balance. Walking through the Keukenhof Gardens was a standout, with endless rows of tulips in full colour. The evening at Fabrique des Lumières was something different again—an immersive art experience that felt quite unique. In Dordrecht, I enjoyed wandering the historic streets before heading to the Kinderdijk Windmills, where the cool weather added to the atmosphere and made the experience feel even more authentic.

We later docked at Bruinisse and visited the nearby town of Veere, which had a quiet charm and beautiful waterfront. In the afternoon, cycling on the complimentary e-bikes was a great way to explore the area more freely, passing canals, open spaces, and locals going about their day.

Keukenhof

Tulips in full bloom at Keukenhof Gardens, creating a calm and picture perfect spring scene

Antwerp was a real highlight. The city has an interesting history, impressive architecture, and a lively feel. Seeing the Cathedral of Our Lady and learning about its reputation as the diamond capital of the world added another layer to the visit. The tasting of Belgian waffles, chocolate, and craft beer was a definite standout and a fun way to experience the local culture.

The journey finished in Arnhem with a visit to Paleis Het Loo, where the grand interiors and gardens offered a glimpse into Dutch royal history and provided a fitting end to the trip.

Antwerp

The towering spire of the Cathedral of Our Lady dominates Antwerp’s skyline, showcasing stunning Gothic architecture and centuries of history

Overall, the cruise struck a great balance between exploring and relaxing. Everything felt well organised and easy, from the service on board to the excursions onshore. My time on the Scenic Jewel was smooth, enjoyable, and full of memorable moments—an experience with Scenic that I’d happily do again.

Crystalized at Sea: My Crystal Cruise from Brisbane to Cairns

A Journey That Redefines Luxury

There are cruises…and then there are journeys that completely redefine what luxury travel can be.

My March 2026 voyage with Crystal Cruises from Brisbane to Cairns was one of those rare experiences.

It’s that moment when the service, the atmosphere, the dining, and the quiet elegance of life onboard all come together – and I  realised I had fallen in love with the Crystal way of travelling.

My home for the voyage was the Sapphire Suite, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Spacious (40 sqm), beautifully appointed, and designed with understated elegance, it felt more like a luxurious apartment than a cabin at sea.

Every morning, our personal Butler Krisztian just knew the perfect way to start our day with a hot, fresh in suite breakfast presented to perfection.

Crystal Serenity

First Impressions of Crystal Serenity

Our first day at sea was spent exploring this remarkable ship. Finding theatres and bars oozing with Old Hollywood charm, we couldn’t wait for the coming days to experience every corner of this beautiful ship.

Although the ship was at capacity, we walked around and barely noticed other passengers. The space per person created the feeling that we were the only two people on board.

There was no early morning reserving a sun lounge or lining up for a table at lunch time – this is how cruising should be, relaxed and stress free.

Pool Deck

Casual BeefBar (Asian Fusion)

Ahh the Serenity!

Travel always comes with the unexpected, and during our itinerary we encountered one of those moments the morning we tendered just off shore at Airlie Beach.

Weather conditions meant the ship couldn’t safely tender guests ashore – a situation that can certainly frustrate guests, but I was impressed at how the Crystal crew handled it.

Communication was clear and calm. Before we knew it, a new “Daily Updated Reflections”- (our daily cruise information) was delivered to our suite. Rather than feeling like a disruption, the day simply became another opportunity to enjoy the ship’s endless amenities. and entertainment.

Our afternoon was spent sipping a chilled glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc and our daily canapes on our verandah (delivered to our suite 4.30pm each day) while looking over the turquoise Coral Sea and Airlie Beach in the distance.

Dining That Rivals the World’s Best

I was left speechless at the endless choices when it came to dining. From the casual settings to the more formal venues this was next level dining at sea.

Dining aboard Crystal is an experience in itself, and the highlight for me was Umi Uma by Nobu. The balance of Japanese precision with bold, modern touches created meals that were both elegant and exciting. Each course arrived like a small work of art.

The atmosphere was intimate and refined, yet relaxed enough that you could truly appreciate the experience. It’s rare to find dining at sea that rivals top restaurants on land – but Umi Uma genuinely does.

Umi Uma By Nobu

Why Crystal Stays With You

This voyage reminded me why cruising, when done well, can be one of the most rewarding and memorable ways to travel.

From the quiet comfort of my Sapphire Suite, to the extraordinary dining through out the ship, to the grace and professionalism of the crew when plans unexpectedly changed, every detail felt thoughtful and intentional. It was the kind of care and hospitality that seems increasingly rare in todays modern travel.

Crystal Cruises doesn’t simply offer a holiday. It offers something far more timeless – where elegance, service, and experience truly matter.

And once you’ve been “Crystalized”, it’s very hard to imagine sailing any other way.

AmaWaterways Colours of Provence: A River Cruise Through Southern France

AmaWaterways’ Colours of Provence river cruise captures this essence perfectly, weaving together history, cuisine, art and landscapes along the Rhône River in a way that feels both luxurious and deeply authentic.

Guided shore excursions from AmaKristina offer immersive experiences through historic towns, cultural landmarks, and scenic river landscapes.

Life on board

My day would start at 6:15 am with a tea in the Main Lounge, where a 24-hour tea and coffee station is available. I’d read the daily cruiser via the AmaWaterways app to know the times of excursions, onboard activities, and information about the town we were in. At 6:30 am, fresh pastries arrive from the kitchen, impossible to resist. Breakfast at 7:30 am in the restaurant was always a delight, with the staff remembering my hot drink order and glass of sparkling wine. By 9 am, it was time for our morning excursion on foot, by bike, or by bus to a nearby town returning to the ship by 12:30 pm for a delicious lunch. Afternoons offered either another excursion or time onboard to enjoy local wines, quizzes, watching the ship pass through locks, card games, or relaxing in the outdoor spaces. Afternoon tea at 4 pm was a perfect chance to chat with fellow travellers about the day’s adventures. At 6 pm, Sip & Sail cocktail hour featured a daily special cocktail or other drinks from the extensive menu while the tour director explained the next day’s excursions. Dinner at 7 pm was a highlight with local delicacies served in a relaxed, elegant setting, followed by live music or entertainment, and sometimes dancing with Roberto, the in-house musician and DJ.

Middle East Travel Update: Airline Flexibility for Australians Flying to Europe

Middle East Travel Update: Flights, Flexibility and What Australians Should Do Now

As tensions in the Middle East continue, many Australians with upcoming international travel are reassessing their plans, particularly those flying to Europe or Africa via major transit hubs such as Dubai and Doha.

While headlines can create uncertainty, the reality on the ground is more measured. Airlines, airports and the broader aviation industry have adapted quickly, and most international travel continues to operate with minimal disruption.

Understanding what is happening now, and what may come next, can help travellers make confident and informed decisions.

What’s Actually Happening Right Now

Despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, the reality is that most international flights are continuing to operate largely as normal.

Globally, airlines have already made the majority of schedule adjustments in response to the situation, particularly for services operating through major Middle Eastern hubs. Many carriers have planned ahead, factoring in potential fuel supply concerns and adjusting their schedules accordingly through to at least mid-June.

For travellers, this means that the vast majority of flights currently listed as operating are expected to proceed.

Delays are extremely uncommon, and where changes have occurred, they have typically been managed in advance rather than at the last minute. In recent weeks, only a small percentage of travellers have experienced any changes to their itineraries, and these have generally been handled smoothly without major disruption.

Importantly, airlines are not proactively rerouting passengers in most cases. This means it is up to travellers, or their travel advisor, to review options and make adjustments if they prefer an alternative routing.

Overall, while the situation continues to evolve, the current environment is far more stable than headlines may suggest.

Airline Flexibility: What Travellers Can Actually Do

Airlines operating through the Middle East have introduced a range of flexible policies, giving travellers more options to adjust their plans if needed.

For travellers booked with Emirates, complimentary date changes and full refunds are currently available for eligible flights up to 31 May. Qatar Airways is offering similar flexibility for travel up to 15 June. Where flights fall within these policy windows, travellers are able to receive full cash refunds if services are cancelled, or make changes without penalty.

For those choosing to remain with the same airline, fare differences are often being waived when moving to alternative dates or flights. This can make adjusting travel plans relatively straightforward, provided travellers are comfortable continuing to transit through the Middle East.

However, travellers who prefer to avoid the region altogether are typically rebooking with alternative carriers. In these cases, new fares generally apply, and availability can be limited, particularly on popular routes via Asia.

It is also important to note that airline schedules continue to evolve. Some services, such as departures from Brisbane on certain carriers, are not currently operating, with airlines instead offering options to connect via major gateways like Sydney or Melbourne.

Because policies are regularly updated, the timing of any changes can significantly impact the outcome. Reviewing options with an experienced travel advisor can help ensure the right decision is made based on individual circumstances.

What Travellers Are Actually Doing

Traveller responses to the current situation have varied depending on how directly their plans are affected.

For Australians not travelling through the Middle East, there has been very little change. The vast majority have continued with their plans as normal, with confidence that alternative options can be arranged if needed.

For those booked to travel via major Middle Eastern hubs, the response has been quite different. Travellers with departures in March and April acted quickly, with more than 90 percent choosing to change their flights. Most rebooked with alternative airlines via Asia, while a small number chose to cancel their plans altogether.

For travel in May and beyond, approaches have become more measured. Some travellers have already switched to alternative carriers, while others have secured flexible back-up flights or are taking a wait-and-see approach as airline schedules continue to evolve.

More experienced travellers have generally been the quickest to act. Many have prioritised protecting existing cruise, tour or land arrangements by allowing extra buffer time and reducing risk wherever possible.

Travellers with tighter schedules or more budget-driven plans have been more likely to continue with their original itineraries, sometimes accepting a higher level of uncertainty.

Overall, there is a clear sense of caution, but not panic. Many travellers are seeking reliable, fact-based advice to help them make informed decisions that suit their individual circumstances.

Fuel and Future Disruptions: What to Plan For Next

While much of the current focus has been on flight routes, fuel is emerging as the next key factor shaping international travel.

Fuel pricing has already been influencing airfares over the past six weeks, with many travellers noticing more frequent price increases. However, the bigger impact in the coming weeks is likely to come from how airlines manage capacity.

Rather than making sudden changes, airlines are gradually adjusting schedules to conserve fuel and maintain profitability. This can include reducing flight frequency on highly competitive routes and consolidating passengers onto fewer services. In many cases, these changes are being made with some notice, rather than at the last minute.

For travellers, this creates a different type of risk. Flights may still operate, but with fewer options available, making it more difficult to adjust plans if needed.

Late bookers are likely to feel this most, with limited availability pushing prices higher or reducing choice. Travellers with fixed departure dates, particularly those connecting to cruises or tours, should also pay close attention to any schedule changes.

One of the most important strategies is to allow buffer time between flights and onward travel. Arriving a day or two before a cruise or tour departure can provide valuable protection if schedules shift.

There may also be opportunities ahead. As airlines in the Middle East return to full capacity, discounted fares may emerge to help fill reinstated services. However, these may not suit all travellers depending on current travel advice.

In the current environment, flexibility and forward planning are more important than ever. Exploring alternative airlines, allowing extra time and seeking trusted advice can help travellers secure both better value and greater peace of mind.

How to Make the Right Decision for You

In the current environment, there is no single answer that suits every traveller. The right decision depends on your comfort level, travel priorities and how flexible your plans are.

For many Australians, travel is continuing with only minor adjustments. In fact, across the travel industry, confidence remains strong. Many experienced travellers, including travel professionals themselves, are continuing to travel internationally and have future trips planned.

If you feel comfortable travelling, there is no reason to cancel plans unnecessarily. However, it is important to stay informed and make decisions based on reliable advice rather than headlines.

When it comes to transiting through the Middle East, a balanced approach is key. Current Smartraveller advice recommends avoiding travel through certain areas, and this should be taken seriously. Where possible, alternative routing options may provide greater peace of mind. For those who are comfortable proceeding, flights are continuing to operate with adjustments in place.

The Value of Having Experts in Your Corner

At a time like this, preparation and support can make a significant difference to the overall travel experience.

Travel advisors are actively monitoring bookings, reviewing airline updates and, where appropriate, securing alternative options or back-up plans for their clients. This can include rebooking flights early, holding flexible alternatives or adjusting itineraries to reduce risk.

At Chirn Park Travel, this approach is part of everyday service. By staying across developments and working closely with airline partners, the team helps travellers navigate changes with confidence and clarity.

Travel does not always go exactly to plan. However, making informed decisions, allowing for flexibility and having experienced support available can help minimise risk and reduce stress.

With the right preparation and guidance, travellers can continue to explore the world with confidence, even in uncertain times.
