Arctic Adventure Through Spitsbergen’s Glaciers

It all started in Brisbane. From the subtropics to the Arctic – five flights later, we were heading
deep into the polar north. Brisbane to Dubai, Dubai to Paris, Paris to Oslo, Oslo to Tromsø, then
finally to Longyearbyen, a tiny town clinging to the edge of civilization in Svalbard. Just reaching
the starting line of this adventure was a journey in itself, and the anticipation kept building with
each connection.
Once we boarded Le Boréal, everything shifted. The ship was sleek, quiet, and surprisingly
luxurious for an expedition vessel. It felt like a floating hotel – with better views. As we left
Longyearbyen and began sailing north, the scenery quickly turned from rugged to otherworldly.
Jagged peaks, vast glaciers, and ice-choked fjords stretched out in every direction. There was
barely a tree or blade of grass, just raw, untouched wilderness. The silence was deep and
powerful.

Longyearbyen Airport Arrival

Each day brought a new landing or zodiac cruise – always something unexpected. One morning,
we drifted through fog into a bay filled with brash ice and spotted a polar bear ambling across a
distant ridge. Another day, we hiked through an old whaling station, now a ghost of a place
where the Arctic once paid the price for human ambition.
The real highlight came on June 19th. We reached the ice floes at 80° North – just 600 nautical
miles from the North Pole. Most people never even get close to that line. The sea turned solid
with shifting white plates of ice, stretching to the horizon. It was surreal. The crew marked the
moment with a celebration on deck. Champagne was poured, music played, and everyone
came out to toast the achievement. Wrapped in parkas and grinning like kids, we felt like
explorers.

No 2142

Despite the remote setting, life aboard Le Boréal was anything but rough. Gourmet meals, good
wine, and even a spa made the ship a cozy contrast to the stark, icy landscapes outside. The
expedition team was top-notch – biologists, glaciologists, and Arctic veterans—always ready to
share what they knew and help us make sense of what we were seeing.

Wildlife was everywhere if you looked hard enough. Arctic foxes darted across snowy plains,
reindeer grazed close to shore, walruses lounged on ice sheets, and seabirds filled the sky.
Every day felt like a new chapter in some half-mythical book about the ends of the Earth.

Svalbard Walrus

By the time we looped back to Longyearbyen, there was a shared understanding among the
passengers: this wasn’t just a trip. It was something more – something rare. A week on the edge
of the world, surrounded by ice, silence, and the sense that we’d brushed up against something
ancient and immense.
From Brisbane to 80° North. Not many can say they’ve done that.

My Unforgettable Stay at Sungulwane: A South African Adventure

Arrival at Sungulwane Private Game Lodge!

In March 2024, I travelled to South Africa as part of a 12-day journey through the country, and the standout experience of my trip was undoubtedly my two-night stay at Sungulwane Private Game Lodge in KwaZulu-Natal.

Nestled in the heart of Zululand, Sungulwane offers an authentic and intimate safari experience, where luxury and nature blend seamlessly. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the lodge’s serene surroundings and the exceptional service provided by the staff. Every detail of my stay was carefully attended to, making me feel truly pampered while being completely immersed in the wild beauty of the reserve.

Lions, Cheetahs & Big Five Magic

From the very first game drive, the wildlife came out in full force. We saw four of the Big Five – Rhino, Elephants, Buffalo, and Lions – all in their natural environment. But the moment that really stuck with me? Watching a lioness and her cubs feeding on a fresh kill. It was raw, powerful, and honestly kind of emotional. You could hear the deep growls and low roars echoing through the bush. The sight of the mother protecting her cubs while they fed was both mesmerising and humbling.  It felt like we were witnessing something ancient and wild. And then there were the cheetahs. Three brothers, two eating while the third kept watch. It was like a live-action nature documentary, and we had front-row seats.

Night Drives & Starry Skies

Thanks to a couple of unexpected flat tyres (which the staff handled like total pros), we ended up doing a night game drive, and it turned out to be one of the most magical parts of the trip. Driving through the reserve in the dark, with just the spotlight sweeping across the bush, felt like stepping into another world. We were on the lookout for leopards, and while we didn’t spot one, the experience itself was unforgettable. The stars were unreal. So many, so bright and the sounds of the bush at night were both eerie and beautiful. It was peaceful, thrilling, and totally unforgettable.

Dinner Under the Stars

On our last night, we had a traditional Boma dinner under the stars, and it was pure magic. Picture this: a roaring fire, delicious local food, and the sounds of the bush all around you. We shared stories, listened to music, and just soaked up the atmosphere. There’s something about eating outdoors, surrounded by nature, that makes everything taste better. It was the perfect way to end the trip – warm, welcoming, and full of heart.

The Watering Hole View That Never Got Old

One of my favorite things about Sungulwane was how close you could get to the action without even leaving the lodge. The deck (and the infinity pool!) overlooked a watering hole, and it was like nature’s own reality show. Elephants, buffalo, antelope, Warthogs (Super cute) they all came and went throughout the day. I’d be sipping coffee in the morning or relaxing in the pool in the afternoon, and suddenly a whole herd would wander in. It was peaceful, wild, and completely mesmerizing. Honestly, I could’ve stayed there all day just watching the world go by.

My time at Sungulwane was a truly unforgettable part of my South African journey. From witnessing the Big Five to observing Elephants Grazing, Rhino wandering and Hippo’s Floating, to relaxing by the watering hole and exploring the reserve by day and night, every moment was an immersion in the wild beauty of the country. Sungulwane provided the perfect balance of adventure, luxury, and connection with nature, and it will remain one of the most memorable experiences of my travels.

Club Med Phuket: Where Thai Culture Meets Beachside Haven

This was my 6th visit to a Club Med resort, and Club Med Phuket exceeded all expectations from the moment I arrived. The beauty of Kata Beach, with its soft sands and turquoise waters, provided the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway. The resort offered an array of incredible experiences that made my stay unforgettable.

The modern rooms were a perfect blend of comfort and style, offering a cozy retreat after a day of exploration. The recently renovated bar and pool area provided a sleek, inviting space to relax with a cocktail while enjoying the resort’s lively atmosphere.

The excitement of Muay Thai added a dynamic connection to local traditions. I also took part in aqua aerobics, archery, and tennis, all of which kept me active and engaged during my stay in a fun, dynamic way.

The attentive Club Med staff were incredibly welcoming and made my stay even more enjoyable. They were always ready to assist with a smile, whether it was organizing activities or providing recommendations for exploring the area.

The adults-only pool became my serene oasis, perfect for relaxing with a cocktail while soaking up the sun. The kids’ club provided a safe space for children, allowing parents to enjoy some downtime. I also indulged in a rejuvenating visit to the day spa, where I treated myself to a soothing massage and wellness treatments that left me feeling refreshed.

In the evenings, I enjoyed the variety of nightly shows and entertainment, which brought everyone together in a festive atmosphere.

24 hours in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a city that dances to its own beat – literally.  This is a city that pulses with colour, passion, and rhythm.

Even for a short stay, you can still experience the heart of this captivating capital, from its colourful barrios to a sultry tango night.

If you only have one full day in Buenos Aires, make it count.

La Boca

Start your day with a guided walking tour in the iconic neighborhood of La Boca, where the energy is as bold as the colours on the walls.  You’ll explore Caminito, the famous open-air street museum filled with vibrant murals, tango performers, and artisan stalls.

Make sure your tour includes a stop at La Bombonera, the legendary stadium that’s home to Boca Juniors. Even if you’re not a football fan, the atmosphere here is electric and gives you a real taste of Argentine pride.

Football

For a relaxed afternoon, settle in for Argentine-style tapas – think provoleta (grilled cheese), empanadas, and spiced olives—paired with a glass of Malbec or a refreshing cocktail.

Travel Tip: Not everyone speaks English, especially in more traditional eateries. Having a translation app handy is a game-changer. It makes ordering feel like part of the adventure – and locals often get a kick out of watching travelers try out Spanish. It’s a fun way to connect, especially when ordering your second round of cocktails!

Cocktails

Evening: A Tango Experience at La Ventana

As the sun sets, make your way back to San Telmo for a tango dinner show at La Ventana. Set in a beautifully restored historic building, La Ventana delivers a world-class performance with live musicians, dancers, and even a touch of Argentine folklore.

While the three-course meal is delicious, it’s the passion of the tango that truly steals the show. It’s romantic, dramatic, and the perfect finale to a whirlwind day in Buenos Aires.

Tango La Ventana

Final Word:

Buenos Aires is a city best experienced on foot and through its people. Whether you’re watching tango unfold on the streets of La Boca or enjoying it center stage at La Ventana, the energy here is contagious.   With a day like this, you’ll walk away with a full heart, a phone full of photos, and maybe even a few Spanish phrases up your sleeve.

Barcelona: A City of Color, Culture, and Coastline

Barcelona is a city that pulses with creativity, history, and sun-soaked energy. From Gaudí’s surreal architecture to golden beaches, buzzing markets, and tapas bars tucked into centuries-old alleys, it’s a place where art meets life at every turn. Whether you’re wandering the Gothic Quarter, sipping sangria in a plaza, or watching the sunset from a rooftop, Barcelona is a feast for the senses—and impossible not to fall in love with.

Cover

Barcelona’s food scene is bold, colorful, and bursting with flavor—just like the city itself. Meals here aren’t just about eating—they’re about gathering, lingering, and celebrating. Whether you’re perched on a stool at a buzzing tapas bar, grazing through tiny plates with a glass of something chilled in hand, or sharing a long, lazy lunch at a breezy seaside table, dining in Barcelona is an experience in itself.

The flavors reflect the city’s Mediterranean soul—bright, fresh, and vibrant. Tapas are everywhere, inviting you to sample bite-sized delights, one plate at a time. Meanwhile, fresh-caught seafood from nearby waters brings a distinctly coastal flair, often prepared simply to let the ingredients shine.

Every meal in Barcelona is a little adventure—and a chance to fall even more in love with the city.

Food

Barcelona is full of charming plazas and lively squares that invite you to slow down, sip a drink, and soak in the city’s atmosphere—whether you’re enjoying a cold vermut under palm trees in Plaça Reial, watching local musicians strum guitars in a Gràcia square, or simply people-watching as the sun sets over the Gothic Quarter. These public spaces are where the city breathes—open-air stages for spontaneous performances, casual conversations, and the timeless rhythm of Barcelona life

Square

Barcelona is basically a Gaudí gallery—a city where architecture turns into art and buildings feel alive.

The Sagrada Família is Barcelona’s most iconic landmark—a soaring, surreal basilica that fuses Gothic drama with modernist imagination, and stands as the crowning achievement of architect Antoni Gaudí.

Construction began in 1882, and remarkably, it remains unfinished, with completion projected for the 2030s. Yet even in its incomplete state, the Sagrada Família is a breathtaking marvel of art, architecture, and spiritual symbolism. Every spire, façade, and stained glass window tells a story—depicting scenes from Christ’s life, evoking natural forms, and transforming sunlight into a kaleidoscope of color. Inside the Sagrada Família, there are no straight lines—only curves, spirals, and shapes borrowed from nature. Gaudí believed that straight lines belonged to man, but curves came from God’s own design

Segrada

Casa Batlló is one of Antoni Gaudí’s most dazzling creations, often nicknamed the “House of Bones” for its skeletal shapes and surreal, fluid curves. The façade is cloaked in a mosaic of glittering blues, greens, and purples, catching the sunlight like a shimmering underwater scene. Its balconies resemble masks or skulls, adding an eerie, theatrical flair. And above it all, the roofline curves like the spine of a dragon—a deliberate and dramatic nod to the legend of Saint George, Catalonia’s patron saint

Casa

Park Güell is a whimsical sculpture garden perched on a hillside in northern Barcelona, where nature meets art, and every surface seems to curve, twist, or sparkle.  It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most magical public spaces in the city.

The park is a showcase of Gaudí’s signature style, especially his use a mosaic technique using broken tiles that transforms ordinary surfaces into kaleidoscopic masterpieces. Even the park benches are artistic marvels, snaking like colorful sea serpents along the terrace. From this upper terrace, you get breathtaking panoramic views over Barcelona, with the city’s skyline unfolding all the way to the Mediterranean Sea—a perfect spot to sit back, snap photos, or just take it all in.

Park

The Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is where ancient Barcelona comes alive. This neighborhood is a stunning blend of Roman ruins, medieval structures, and modern Catalan soul.

Wander under Gothic archways, stumble upon secret squares and marvel at the Barcelona Cathedral with its dramatic spirals and stained glass windows that glow with color.

Street musicians fill the air with Spanish guitar melodies, and boutiques, galleries, and cafés hide behind centuries-old stone facades. The architecture feels like something out of a historical novel—but the energy is very much alive.

Gothic Quater

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona (Museu Picasso) offers an insight into the formative years of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.

The museum’s collection boasts over 4,200 works, emphasizing Picasso’s early years and his deep connection to Barcelona. Highlights include pieces from his Blue Period, early academic studies, and the complete series of Las Meninas interpretations. The setting itself, with its Gothic architecture, enhances the experience, reflecting the city’s rich history.

Picasso Painting

Barceloneta Beach is Barcelona’s most famous stretch of sand—lively, sun-drenched, and always buzzing with energy. Locals and tourists flock here to swim, sunbathe, play beach volleyball, or sip cocktails at one of the many chiringuitos (beach bars). It’s the perfect spot to cool off after sightseeing, watch the sunset over the Mediterranean, or just kick back and enjoy the city’s vibrant seaside spirit.

Beach

La Boqueria is Barcelona’s most iconic market, located just off La Rambla. Bursting with color and energy, it offers everything from fresh seafood and jamón ibérico to exotic fruits, juices, and ready-to-eat tapas. Dating back to the 13th century, it’s both a local shopping hub and a sensory experience for visitors. Whether you’re grabbing a snack, sitting at a tapas bar like El Quim, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, La Boqueria is a must-see snapshot of Barcelona’s food culture.

St J

Montserrat is a breathtaking mountain sanctuary located about 45 km northwest of Barcelona, renowned for its unique rock formations, spiritual significance, and panoramic views over Catalonia. At its heart lies the Benedictine Santa Maria de Montserrat Monastery, home to the revered Black Madonna (La Moreneta), a 12th-century statue and patron saint of Catalonia. The site attracts pilgrims and travelers alike, offering a blend of religious heritage, natural beauty, and cultural experiences

Monstrat

Barcelona leaves its mark quietly—on your taste buds, in your footsteps, and somewhere deep in your imagination. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you realize you’ve only just scratched the surface. But don’t worry—Barcelona will be waiting when you come back.

Embarking on a trip across South Africa’s stunning Eastern Cape and Western Cape regions is like stepping into a world of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and unparalleled wildlife experiences. My recent journey through this part of the world was nothing short of extraordinary. From intimate wildlife encounters to relaxing stays in luxurious lodges, every stop along the way added a new layer of adventure.

Safari Selfie

Alana on safari in South Africa

We began in Port Elizabeth, where the welcoming charm of the Indian Ocean and the relaxed vibe of the city set the tone for the adventure ahead. From there, our group travelled to Shamwari Private Game Reserve, where I had the privilege of seeing the Big 5 up close. The safari experience was unforgettable, and the luxurious accommodations at Bayete Lodge made it feel like a true escape into nature.

Next, we ventured to Addo Elephant National Park, home to vast herds of elephants. The highlight of my stay was at Gorah Elephant Camp, a luxurious tented camp overlooking a busy waterhole, where I witnessed elephants, buffalo, and various game in their natural habitat, while enjoying a morning coffee personally delivered by the wonderful staff at the lodge.

Following this, we made my way to Kariega Game Reserve, where a boat ride along the Kariega River allowed for stunning wildlife sightings, including lions and rhinos, before retreating to Settlers Drift for an evening game drive and a sundowner.

Along the scenic Garden Route, we stopped in Plettenberg Bay, where the peaceful surroundings of Tsala Treetop Lodge provided a much-needed escape.

Zebras

A few days later, I arrived at the Grootbos Private Reserve, a biodiversity haven tucked between the mountains and the sea, offering an immersive experience in nature’s splendour. From there, it was on to Franschhoek, South Africa’s wine capital, where I savoured award-winning wines and enjoyed curated wine experiences that paired perfectly with the region’s charming French heritage.

The final leg of the journey brought me to Cape Town, where I explored the city’s iconic Table Mountain and bustling waterfront – we even went to a rugby game which was a huge highlight – the atmosphere was electric in the stadium!

My stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel & Spa was the perfect ending to this epic journey—luxurious, tranquil, and surrounded by breathtaking gardens and vineyards. From thrilling safaris to relaxing wine escapes, South Africa’s Western Cape offered a perfect mix of adventure, luxury, and natural beauty.

Quantum Moments

There’s something magical about taking a family vacation where everyone—from kids to grandparents—can find something they love. Our recent 7-night cruise on Quantum of the Seas with Royal Caribbean was the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and quality time together. Traveling with a large group, we had an unforgettable experience with excursions, endless onboard activities, exceptional dining, and plenty of opportunities to unwind.

Quantam Of The Seas

Our journey began with two stops that truly showcased the beauty of the South Pacific. First, we visited Mystery Island, a small, uninhabited paradise in Vanuatu, where we spent the day snorkelling, lounging on pristine beaches, and soaking in the incredible turquoise waters. Next, we docked in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, where we explored the charming blend of French and Melanesian culture, enjoying delicious pastries at local cafés and admiring the island’s stunning landscapes.

Mystery Island

But it wasn’t just the destinations that made this trip so special—it was the incredible range of activities onboard that kept our group entertained throughout the days at sea. The ship itself was packed with fun experiences for everyone. We took our turns zipping around on the dodgem cars, tested our balance on the FlowRider surfing simulator, and had plenty of laughs during trivia competitions. The evenings were filled with energy as we belted out tunes at karaoke, and I even managed to sneak in some peaceful moments in the adult-only solarium and the top-deck, reading a book while the ocean breeze brushed by.

Flowrider

The meals on board were an absolute highlight. We indulged in mouthwatering dinners at Chops Grille, a classic steakhouse that didn’t disappoint, and Jamie’s Italian, where we savoured fresh pasta and delicious Mediterranean flavours. Of course, the main dining room also offered exceptional meals, with the crew taking special care of our group and making every meal a memorable experience. The service was impeccable, and we were always treated like family.

One of the most exciting moments came on our last night at sea when a stunning lightning storm rolled in. We gathered on deck, cocktails in hand, to watch the dramatic display of nature’s power over the ocean. It was the perfect way to end the trip—an awe-inspiring spectacle.

The Eye

This 7-night cruise on the Quantum of the Seas was a perfect family getaway. With something for everyone—adventure, relaxation, great food, and unforgettable moments—it was the ideal way to create lasting memories together. Whether you’re looking for thrilling activities or moments of peace, this Royal Caribbean cruise has it all. I’m already looking forward to our next adventure at sea!

From Hot Pools to Heli-Skiing

Queenstown has long held a place on my must-return list, and after spending a week there, it’s easy to see why it continues to captivate travellers from around the world. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and framed by the dramatic Southern Alps, Queenstown is a destination that offers the perfect balance of adventure, indulgence, and serenity.

Heli Ski Lunch

One of the most relaxing moments of my trip came early on with a visit to the Queenstown Onsen Hot Pools. Sitting in a steaming cedar tub overlooking the Shotover River canyon, I watched the clouds roll over the mountains as the sun began to dip. The peaceful seclusion, paired with a glass of local pinot noir, was the perfect way to unwind and ease into holiday mode.

Onsen

A short drive from Queenstown led me to the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown, a charming village filled with heritage buildings, boutique shops, and cafes. Wandering the tree-lined main street felt like stepping back in time. I spent the morning exploring the local museum, before settling in for lunch at a café where the fireplace was roaring and the coffee was strong.

Queenstown’s culinary scene is world-class, and I made it my mission to try as much as possible. Rātā, Botswana Butchery, and Aosta stood out as favourites—each offering incredible local produce with creative flair. I also explored nearby Gibbston Valley, sampling some of the region’s finest wines. A leisurely afternoon of tasting pinot noirs and cheese platters, surrounded by vineyards and snowy peaks, felt like pure bliss.

Arrowtown

But the true highlight of my trip—the absolute pinnacle—was heli-skiing with Southern Lakes Heli Ski. From the moment the helicopter lifted off, I knew I was in for something special. The flight alone was breathtaking, with endless snow-covered ranges stretching out in every direction. We landed on untouched alpine terrain, where the snow was light and deep and the only sound was the crunch of skis carving through powder. Guided by experienced pros, we enjoyed several exhilarating descents in remote backcountry locations. It was a surreal, adrenaline-fuelled experience that I’ll never forget

Heli Skiing 2

Whether I was sipping wine under crisp blue skies, soaking in a hot pool with a view, or skiing untouched mountain faces accessible only by helicopter, Queenstown offered a perfect week of contrasts and unforgettable moments. It’s a destination that rewards both thrill-seekers and soul-searchers alike—and I already can’t wait to go back.

That First Look at Antartica

I’ll never forget the moment Antarctica came into view. After days of open ocean, suddenly there it was—massive icebergs, snowy mountains, and this crazy stillness that made everything feel kind of magical. I just stood there on deck, totally speechless (and freezing, let’s be honest), trying to take it all in. It felt like stepping into a postcard or a movie set—except it was real, and I was actually there. If you’ve ever dreamed of going somewhere that feels completely untouched, this is it.

Icebergs, Penguins and That “I’m Really here” Feeling

One of the best parts of the trip was getting off the ship and into the thick of it—cruising around in a little Zodiac boat, weaving between icebergs, and then actually stepping foot on Antarctica. We floated past seals lounging on the ice and penguins diving into the water like pros. Then we landed and hiked up a snowy ridge, surrounded by penguins waddling around like they owned the place (which, let’s be honest, they kind of do). Standing there, looking out over the icy landscape, it hit me: I’m really here. On Antarctica. Wild.

Dsc 0781

Whales, Orca, Seals….. Everywhere!

The wildlife in Antarctica is next-level. One morning, we spotted a group of humpback whales bubble-net feeding right near the ship—watching them work together like that was mind-blowing. Later, we saw orcas slicing through the water with that sleek, powerful grace that gives you chills. And the seals? Leopard Seals, Weddell Seals (Cutest), Antarctic Fur Seals – Chilling on Ice Bergs, Sleeping on a Rocky beach or giving the Chinstrap Penguins a hard time as they try and make their way to the water. It felt like being dropped into a nature documentary, except we were living it. If you’re an animal lover, this place will absolutely steal your heart.

Dsc 0536

Watching a Glacier Crash Into the Sea

Okay, this was wild. We were anchored in this quiet bay, just soaking up the views, when suddenly we heard this loud cracking sound. A huge chunk of glacier broke off and crashed into the ocean—it was like nature’s version of fireworks. The sound, the splash, the sheer size of it all… it gave me goosebumps (and not just from the cold). It was a reminder that this place is alive and always changing. If you ever get the chance to see something like that, take it.

Balinese life emphasizes harmony between God, people, and nature—further underscoring the island’s profound spiritual essence. This unique blend of natural beauty and cultural depth truly earns Bali its title as the “Island of the Gods.”

Bali is bursting with diverse places to stay, whether you’re chasing waves, jungle adventures, or vibrant nightlife

Island Of The Gods

Legian is a lively coastal area situated between the more laid-back Kuta and the upscale Seminyak. It’s known for its long stretch of beach ideal for surfing, sunbathing, and enjoying Bali’s famous sunsets. Legian offers a more relaxed atmosphere than Kuta but still features plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops, making it perfect for those who want both convenience and a vibrant social scene.
