Relaxed Elegance at Sea: From Venice to Barcelona on Queen Victoria

One look at Queen Victoria and the excitement became very real

Some holidays are about the destination. This one was just as much about the journey.

Our adventure began with a night in Venice, wandering canals, crossing charming bridges, and enjoying long Italian dinners as gondolas drifted by. It was the perfect introduction to what would become an unforgettable Mediterranean voyage.

The next morning, we transferred to Trieste, where Queen Victoria awaited. Seeing her for the first time was a special moment. Before long, we were onboard with a welcome drink in hand, ready to set sail.

Queen Victoria

The Beautiful Queen Victoria

A Perfect Blend of Sea Days and Shore Days

From day one, what struck me most was how relaxed everything felt. Despite travelling during the busy June season, the ship never felt crowded. There were always sunbeds available, peaceful corners to escape with a book, and endless sea views to enjoy. The sea days quickly became some of my favourite memories.

Each port brought something unique. We explored the coastal charm of Zadar, walked the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, admired the rich history and grand architecture of Valletta, and soaked up the sunshine and vibrant atmosphere of Palma de Mallorca. Every destination offered its own character and charm, while Queen Victoria provided a beautiful home between adventures.

Classic Cunard, Modern Fun

Life onboard was equally memorable. Cunard’s famous Afternoon Tea became a favourite ritual, whether enjoying warm scones and live music in the Queens Room or indulging in Champagne Afternoon Tea in The Verandah. The Gala Evenings added a touch of glamour without feeling formal or intimidating. Whether guests embraced the Red & Gold and Roaring Twenties themes or kept things simple, everyone felt comfortable.

There was always something happening onboard too from trivia competitions, live bands, talented musicians, karaoke, silent discos, and even football matches shown on the big screens. The atmosphere was lively when you wanted it to be, yet always relaxed and welcoming.

Is Cunard Too Formal? My Honest Take

Before this voyage, I’ll admit I had some preconceived ideas and beliefs about Cunard. Like many people, I envisioned ballgowns every evening, strict dress codes, and a cruise experience that might feel a little out of my comfort zone.

What I found was something completely different and far more enjoyable.

Yes, Cunard is elegant. The ships are beautiful, the service is exceptional, and there are lovely traditions like Afternoon Tea and Gala Evenings. But what surprised me most was how relaxed and welcoming it all felt.

There was never any pressure to dress a certain way or participate in every formal event. Some guests embraced the glamour of Gala Nights, while others simply dressed smartly and enjoyed the atmosphere. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying a trivia quiz, sipping champagne at afternoon tea, or dancing at the silent disco, everyone felt comfortable being themselves.

What Cunard offers isn’t stuffy formality, it’s a sense of occasion. It’s about enjoying the finer things at your own pace, without feeling judged or out of place.

My Final thought

From the canals of Venice to the streets of Barcelona, this voyage delivered beautiful destinations, unforgettable experiences, and the simple pleasure of travelling well. If you’re looking for a cruise that combines classic style, exceptional service, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, Queen Victoria delivers all of that and more!

And if you’re worried about needing a ballgown every night, don’t be. Just bring your sense of adventure and be prepared to relax in style while receiving exception true Cunard White Star Service.

British Isles & Iceland with Oceania Cruises

Luxury Cruising Aboard Oceania Marina

There’s something truly special about exploring the British Isles and Iceland by sea. My journey aboard Oceania Marina combined breathtaking scenery, fascinating cultures and the comfort of luxury cruising. Sailing from Southampton, England, we enjoyed elegant accommodation, exceptional dining and personalised service as we set off to discover some of Northern Europe’s most spectacular destinations.

Oceania Marina combines elegant luxury, exceptional dining and personalised service, making every day at sea as memorable as the destinations themselves.

Scotland’s Historic Charm & Highland Wildlife

Our first ports of call showcased the beauty and character of Scotland. From the historic streets of Edinburgh to the rugged coastlines of Invergordon and the Shetland Islands, every stop offered something unique. One of the highlights was meeting Scotland’s famous Highland cows, affectionately known as “hairy coos”, whose shaggy coats and gentle nature made for a memorable Scottish experience.

Norway’s Stunning Coastal Beauty

Crossing the North Sea, we arrived in Norway, where dramatic fjords, colourful villages and stunning coastal scenery awaited. The highlight was undoubtedly Ålesund, renowned for its striking Art Nouveau architecture and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding islands and waterways. The scenery throughout this part of the voyage was simply breathtaking and perfectly showcased the natural beauty of Scandinavia.

Iceland’s Dramatic Landscapes

Iceland provided a spectacular finale to the journey. From the colourful village of Seyðisfjörður and the scenic beauty of Akureyri to the remote landscapes of Ísafjörður, every port revealed a different side of this extraordinary country. The voyage concluded in Reykjavik, where Iceland’s unique blend of volcanic landscapes, geothermal wonders and Nordic culture provided the perfect ending to an unforgettable Oceania Cruises experience.

Antarctica with HX: A World beyond words

An Experience Beyond Expectation

Antarctica is one of those rare places that stops you in your tracks, not just for its beauty, but for the sheer scale and stillness of it. It’s vast, untouched, and humbling in a way that’s difficult to put into words. A destination that doesn’t just impress you, it quietly shifts your perspective.

My recent expedition with HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) on their Highlights of Antarctica itinerary, sailing onboard the MS Roald Amundsen, was nothing short of extraordinary. It wasn’t just the landscapes or the wildlife, it was the way the entire journey unfolded, layered with meaning, knowledge, and moments that genuinely stayed with me.

This is not a traditional cruise. It’s an experience built around exploration, understanding, and connection, both to the destination and to the environment itself.

Icebergs of the Lamaire Channel

Icebergs of the Lamaire Channel

The Journey South

The journey began in Buenos Aires, before flying south to Ushuaia, a place often referred to as the end of the world. From Ushuaia, we set sail across the legendary Drake Passage. A crossing that’s often spoken about with a mix of caution and curiosity, known as either the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake,” depending on conditions. I was incredibly fortunate to experience the latter!

The seas were calm and glassy, stretching endlessly around us and making for a pretty surreal start to the journey. It allowed time to settle in, to absorb the anticipation, and to begin understanding just how remote and remarkable this part of the world really is.

These days at sea were far from just a crossing. They were an introduction, not just to Antarctica, but to the philosophy behind HX. The Expedition Team began to layer the experience with knowledge through briefings, wildlife insights, and storytelling, that transformed what lay ahead into something far more meaningful.

Tip: Even if you’re lucky enough to experience a “Drake Lake,” conditions can change quickly and it’s always better to be prepared, so is worth packing seasickness tablets just in case! better to be safe than sorry I always say.

Experiencing Antarctica

Arriving in Antarctica is something you never forget. Towering icebergs, vast glaciers, and a stillness that’s difficult to put into words set the scene from the very beginning. Each day unfolds differently, shaped by the conditions, with landings and zodiac cruises taking you deep into this untouched environment.

Wildlife encounters are constant and incredibly special. You might find yourself walking among colonies of penguins, from curious Gentoo to the striking Chinstrap, watching them go about their day, completely unfazed by your presence. Out on the water, whales surface nearby, sometimes so close you can hear the breath as they rise. Seals can often be seen resting on drifting ice, completely at ease in their surroundings.

It’s the unpredictability of it all that makes it so memorable. One moment you’re quietly taking in the landscape, and the next you’re witnessing wildlife in its most natural, untouched state.

Optional Extras

One of the most memorable parts of the journey was the Discovery Kayaking experience. Moving quietly through the water, surrounded by glaciers and drifting ice, it offered a completely different and deeply peaceful perspective of Antarctica. There’s a stillness to it that you simply don’t get any other way. No engine noise, no distractions, just you, the water, and Antarctica in its purest form. It was easily one of the most peaceful and memorable parts of the entire journey, and something I would highly recommend to anyone considering it.

Tip: Discovery Kayaking has very limited spaces, so it’s important to pre-book this experience well in advance to avoid missing out.

Life Onboard: The Ship, Crew & Expedition Experience

Life onboard strikes the perfect balance between comfort, connection, and purpose. The ship itself is beautifully designed. It’s modern, Scandinavian-inspired, and incredibly comfortable without feeling over the top. Large panoramic windows, cosy lounges, and quiet spaces make it easy to take in the ever-changing scenery, while three dining venues offer a great range of options depending on your mood.

There’s also a beautiful onboard sauna, perfectly positioned with panoramic views, offering a unique way to unwind while taking in the icy landscapes outside.

What truly sets the experience apart, however, is the people. The crew are warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout the journey. At the heart of it all is the Expedition Team, a group of scientists, naturalists, and polar experts who bring Antarctica to life in a way that goes far beyond what you see. Their knowledge, passion, and storytelling add depth to every landing, zodiac cruise, and onboard experience.

Panoramic views in the sauna

Panoramic views in the sauna

The Science Centre further enhances this, offering the opportunity to engage with real research and gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable environment. Experiences like the Science Boat allow you to step beyond observation and feel genuinely connected to the destination.

Evenings onboard are relaxed and reflective, with a natural sense of community forming among guests. It’s less about entertainment, and more about sharing the day’s experiences, reviewing photos, or simply watching the light shift across the ice.

Tip: Pre-book your preferred dining times in Aune and Fredheim, as they fill quickly. Don’t miss the daily briefings and recap sessions, as they add incredible context to your experience. And if the Science Boat is on your list, be sure to book early, as spaces are limited.

A Journey That Stays With You

What makes an expedition with HX so special is the balance it strikes between comfort, education, and genuine exploration. This isn’t about simply ticking Antarctica off a list, it’s about experiencing it in a way that feels meaningful, respectful, and deeply immersive.

Every part of the journey is thoughtfully designed to help you connect, not just with the destination, but with the environment, the wildlife, and the stories that make this place so extraordinary. It’s travel with purpose, and it’s what sets this experience apart.

This wasn’t just a trip.

It was one of the most powerful and humbling journeys I’ve ever had. Antarctica has a way of staying with you, quietly shifting your perspective long after you’ve returned home.
And with HX, you don’t just visit this incredible place… you truly connect with it.

Tip: Go in with an open mind and flexible expectations. Antarctica runs on nature’s schedule, and that unpredictability is part of what makes it so unforgettable.

Carnival, Coastlines & First-Time Feels

Molly and I were recently invited to experience a four-night trip on the Carnival Luminosa from Brisbane which was exactly what we needed, a refreshing little escape with plenty of time to relax, recharge, and enjoy life at sea.
Even though I was travelling without my family, I couldn’t help seeing the whole experience through a family lens. Everywhere I looked, I found myself thinking how much my 5 and 10 year olds would have loved it too. From the variety of food options to the entertainment and all the spaces to unwind, it really felt like a ship designed for all ages. Watching movies while swimming in the pool (next to the soft serve ice cream machine) definitely would have been their favourite!
Carnivalluminosa Balconycabin 05062

A Twin Share Balcony Cabin on Carnival Luminosa. Plenty of couch space for your suitcases, great sized bathroom, heaps of cupboard space.

What stood out most was how easy it was to settle into cruise life. I was really impressed with the size of the cabin (twin share balcony) – and there was plenty of space for our 2 large suitcases in the sitting area. Days were spent enjoying the ocean views from the adults-only Serenity retreat, trying different dining spots (definitely recommend Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse), and simply soaking up the atmosphere. There was always something happening, but never any pressure to do it all.
Img 8201

Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse was a great detour from the main dining hall on night 2. The food was delicious and the cocktails went down a treat.

Our itinerary included a day in Airlie Beach which we were very excited to explore for the day. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. The wind was strong, and the sea was far too choppy for the tenders to safely take passengers ashore.
Of course, it was disappointing not to step foot in Airlie Beach, but at the same time, it was reassuring to know that Carnival was putting safety first. In conditions like that, you want a crew that makes the tough call, and they absolutely did.
Instead, we spent the day enjoying more of what Carnival Luminosa had to offer, and honestly, it reminded me that sometimes the best part of a trip is the unexpected slower moments.
By the end of the four nights, I left feeling rested and already imagining how much my family would enjoy a trip like this together. Even without the planned stop in Airlie Beach, it was still a memorable getaway, and one I’d happily do again.

The Perfect First Cruise? My 4-Night Girls Trip on Carnival Luminosa

The Perfect First Cruise? My 4-Night Girls Trip on Carnival Luminosa

Setting sail

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Whitsundays on the Carnival Luminosa and honestly… it’s the easiest way to find out if cruising is your thing. I’ve always kind of assumed cruises were either for retirees or huge party groups, with not much in between.

But after doing a 4-night girls trip on the Carnival Luminosa, I completely get the appeal now.

It honestly just felt like staying at a resort… except the resort happened to be floating through the ocean. We left from Brisbane, unpacked once, and suddenly had four days where everything felt ridiculously easy.

Whitsundays Tender Spot

Cruise life

One of the biggest surprises was how quickly we settled into cruise life. I never felt trapped or bored like I expected to. Most of our time was spent in Serenity, the adults-only area at the back of the ship, which became our little ritual every day.

Watching the ocean with a cocktail in hand, reading an entire book in one sitting, and doing absolutely nothing without feeling guilty? Honestly elite behaviour.

The vibe was super wholesome and relaxing, and while shorter cruises under 7 nights don’t offer drinks packages, the drinks were actually pretty reasonable. A jug cocktail for around $66 between friends really wasn’t bad at all.

They often had little burgers or pizza to eat between meals if you got hungry, and room service was really reasonable too.

Wild weather didn’t dampen our spirits

We were meant to stop in Airlie Beach, but the weather was too rough for tendering, so we couldn’t get off the ship. Surprisingly though, it didn’t ruin the trip at all. Everyone received onboard credit, and we just leaned further into ship life instead.

We dressed up for formal night, wandered between bars, watched people celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in matching shirts, and had one of the best meals of the trip at Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse.

Their dirty martini genuinely deserves its own review!

The service was incredible and a really special experience I would highly recommend.

Short break was just what I needed

If you’ve ever been cruise-curious but unsure, I actually think a shorter cruise like this is the perfect first test.

Four nights was enough time to properly switch off, but not so long that it felt overwhelming if cruising ended up not being your thing. For me though? I totally get why people become obsessed with it.

Turns out a floating resort with ocean views, late-night pizza, fancy dinners and zero responsibilities is a pretty hard concept to hate.

Oceania Allura Miami to Bahamas

New Ship, New Destination

In 2025, I had the privilege of sailing aboard this remarkable new vessel on its debut and inaugural voyage departing the United States from Miami, bound for the Bahamas and return. An inaugural sailing always carries a distinct sense of occasion. A blend of anticipation, ceremony, and discovery and this short itinerary delivered on all fronts.

Having now experienced multiple cruises across a range of ships, styles, and destinations, I can confidently say this voyage stood apart. What made it even more meaningful was sharing the experience with my mother on her very first cruise. From embarkation to our final morning back in port, it was a journey we genuinely savoured from beginning to end.

Exploring the Ship

Stepping aboard the Oceania Allura for the first time was an experience defined by understated elegance and thoughtful design. As Oceania Cruises newest addition, the ship immediately impresses with its refined residential aesthetic, light-filled public spaces, and an atmosphere that feels both contemporary and intimate. From the sweeping Grand Staircase to the beautifully curated artwork throughout the vessel, every detail reflects the brand’s signature focus on sophistication and comfort.

Exploring the ship revealed a collection of standout features, including expansive specialty dining venues that elevate the line’s renowned culinary program, a serene Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center designed for holistic wellness, and spacious veranda staterooms that emphasise both luxury and functionality. Must recommend the “Experience Shower” in the spa which I haven’t seen anywhere else, having modes to relax, energise or just give you a day to remember with it’s feel, and ambient light show all while in the spa.

The pool deck offers a relaxed yet polished retreat, while the lounges and bars provide inviting spaces to unwind. For a first visit, Allura strikes an impressive balance between modern innovation and the classic Oceania ambiance loyal guests appreciate.

The Great Food, The Amazing Views

Dining aboard Oceania Allura is a defining part of the experience, with the line’s culinary philosophy evident across every venue. From refined specialty restaurants showcasing expertly prepared steaks and Italian classics to vibrant pan-Asian concepts and elegant French inspired cuisine, the emphasis is firmly on quality ingredients and meticulous presentation. Even the more casual venues maintain an elevated standard, offering made-to-order dishes and thoughtfully curated menus that rival many land based restaurants. It’s a programme designed not simply to feed guests, but to create memorable dining moments at sea.

Equally captivating were the views as we sailed through the turquoise waters of the Bahamas. Whether enjoying breakfast on deck or a sunset cocktail by the pool, the ship provided a perfect vantage point for the region’s crystal-clear shallows and powder-white beaches. The contrast between Allura’s sleek, modern lines and the vivid blues of the Caribbean created a striking visual experience, one that reinforced why cruising remains such an immersive way to explore this part of the world.

Islands and Treasures in the Bahamas

Our time ashore was just as memorable. Visiting Gilligan’s Island felt surreal, with islands around this part having powdery sand, impossibly clear water, and a sense of complete seclusion. Swimming alongside sea turtles in their natural habitat was a genuine highlight, an experience that felt both surreal and humbling. We also encountered the Bahamas famous swimming pigs, an iconic sight that adds a playful and uniquely Bahamian touch to the day.

Another island stop offered a more indulgent perspective of the region, complete with beachfront cocktails and a leisurely cruise past some of the Bahamas most notable private residences. Among them were homes owned by Michael Jordan, Beyoncé Knowles, and Tiger Woods, a reminder of the destination’s long standing appeal to global icons. The combination of natural beauty and understated luxury made for a perfectly balanced island experience.

Suites to Impress

As pictured, Oceania Allura offers a range of accommodations that cater to every preference. The larger suites impress with expansive layouts, luxurious bathrooms, and elegant furnishings, while even the standard cabins provide a surprising sense of comfort and refinement. Thoughtful design, quality materials, and attention to detail ensure that every stateroom regardless of category, it feels inviting and distinctly special.

Miami from Start or the End

Of course, beginning and ending our journey in Miami meant a must do photo opportunity at the iconic Miami Beach sign, as pictured here with my mother. While in the area, South Beach is a highlight not to be missed, offering vibrant streets, Art Deco architecture, and a lively local scene. A stop at the famous Versace Mansion, where Gianni Versace lived before his untimely passing, adds a touch of history and glamour to any Miami visit.

Sweet Ending

Ending the cruise was a truly memorable experience from start to finish. I highly recommend Oceania Cruises, and the Oceania Allura in particular, for anyone seeking a luxurious voyage paired with exceptional dining. The itinerary itself was the perfect complement, with the journey from Miami to Nassau offering a seamless mix of relaxation, adventure, and stunning Caribbean scenery.

Sailing Away with Disney Wonder

Setting Sail with Magic

There’s nothing quite like the moment you first step onto the Disney Wonder. As our family walked through the grand atrium doors, we were welcomed by a burst of applause and a warm, cheerful announcement over the speakers. Hearing our name ring out through the ship instantly set the tone – we weren’t just boarding a cruise; we were entering a world of Disney magic.

Right there in the atrium, waiting with open arms and big smiles, were some of the beloved Disney characters themselves. Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy were waving, posing for photos, and greeting families as they arrived. The kids could hardly contain their excitement, and honestly… neither could I. It felt like walking straight into a storybook, where the adventure begins the moment your feet hit the carpet.

Meet & Greet With Minnie

Nothing beats the excitement of meeting Disney characters up close on board.

The Ultimate Play Paradise at Sea

One of the first places our children begged to explore was the Oceaneer Club and Lab, Disney’s signature kids’ club for ages 3–12. Designed with themed rooms – think Andy’s Room (yes, with a Slinky Dog slide!), a Marvel Super Hero Academy, Disney Junior, and Frozen Adventures — it feels like a mini theme park just for them. The counselors are warm, fun, and always ready to help them dive into games, crafts, or imaginative play. The kids kept asking to go back!

HOT TIP: Keep Your Phone Handy!

When your little ones are having fun in the Oceaneer Club and Lab, you don’t need to keep popping back to check on them. Supervisors will send a message to your phone through the DCL Navigator app if your child wants to be picked up or needs you. This means you can fully relax – enjoy a quiet coffee, slip into the adult pool, or catch a show – knowing you’ll be contacted instantly if you’re needed.

Toy Story Kids Club

Exploring, crafting, and playing – Disney’s Oceaneer Club is the ultimate kids’ paradise at sea.

Splashing, Sliding, and Character Magic

On our second day sailing, we made a beeline to the AquaLab, the ship’s interactive water playground. There are geysers, pouring buckets, leaky pipes, and Donald-shaped boilers that occasionally drench everyone. The highlight? The Twist ’n’ Spout water slide – a double-looping yellow slide that twists over two decks and sends you spiraling into a splash zone below. Kids and adults alike had the time of their lives shrieking with joy.

Not far from the water fun is Goofy’s Pool, the family pool area. The pool deck has a giant LED screen – FunnelVision – which plays Disney-themed movies and cartoons while families lounge, swim, or dance deck parties into the evening.

After a fun-filled morning, lunch at Cabanas replenished our energy, and then we headed to the Walt Disney Theatre for an afternoon show. The Wonder puts on Broadway-style musicals – full of beloved Disney characters and dazzling production numbers.

The evening brought rotational dining. On the Disney Wonder, you rotate through three main dining rooms: Animator’s Palate, Triton’s, and Tiana’s Place. Animator’s Palate is always a hit – the walls light up with animation sequences, and sometimes the characters even interact with your table through “drawing magic.” At Tiana’s Place, the menu is inspired by the bold, flavourful dishes of New Orleans, lively music, and fun character visits make dinner feel like a party.

Pool Area With Slide

Splash, slide, repeat! The kids had a blast exploring every corner of AquaLab.

Final Goodbyes (and More Disney Surprises)

Character meet-and-greets are sprinkled throughout the cruise. On the Wonder, you’ll run into Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Stitch and more. We queued for a royal gathering in the atrium, meeting princesses like Tiana, Cinderella, and Belle. The wide smiles, the sparkle in their eyes – unforgettable. Others have recommended catching impromptu hallway encounters by hanging around Deck 5 where characters often emerge.

That evening, as the cruise drew to a close, we gathered on deck for the farewell event – and because this is Disney, the night ended with a spectacular fireworks show at sea, a magical highlight that sets Disney Cruise Line apart from other cruise lines.

HOT TIP: Book the Magic Early!

If you’re hoping to secure spots for Royal Court Royal Tea (high tea), the Princess Meet & Greet (Royal Gathering), or a magical makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, be ready to book as soon as your online booking window opens – typically 75 days before sailing for first-time Disney Cruise Line guests. These experiences are extremely popular and fill up fast, especially on shorter itineraries like a 3-night cruise. Mark your calendar, set a reminder, and log in the moment bookings open to avoid disappointment!

Princess Meet & Greet

A beautiful moment where fairytales came to life and the kids got to meet the princesses they’ve always dreamed of.

A Holiday Every Age Will Love

A cruise on Disney Wonder is more than just a getaway it’s a full-on family adventure!

Between the kids’ clubs, the splash zones and slides, the rotational dining, and the character moments, every minute feels thoughtfully designed to deliver that signature Disney magic. Whether your kids are tiny toddlers or tween adventurers, there’s something for them to love and for you to enjoy, too.

While onboard, there are exclusive cruise offers (such as save an extra 10%) if you are keen to book your next Disney cruise then and there.

From the moment you step onboard to the final wave goodbye, Disney Wonder delivers an experience that feels truly special. If you’re dreaming of a holiday where the kids are entertained, the adults can relax, and the whole family makes memories that will last a lifetime, this is it.

Until next time, Disney Wonder – we can’t wait to sail with you again.
