Sri Lanka: A Country That Has It All

One Island, Endless Experiences

There aren’t many destinations where you can wake up amongst rolling tea plantations, spend the afternoon on safari, and finish your holiday relaxing on a tropical beach.

Sri Lanka packs an incredible amount of diversity into one relatively small island, with every region revealing a completely different side of the country.

Changing Landscapes Around Every Corner

Over the course of our journey, we explored ancient UNESCO World Heritage sites, wandered through lush tea plantations, searched for wildlife in national parks, and unwound along the country’s beautiful southern coastline.

What amazed me most was how quickly the scenery changed. Within just a few hours’ drive, we’d go from cool, misty mountains to golden beaches lined with swaying palm trees. Every day felt like we had arrived in a completely new destination.

The Difference a Private Guide Makes

One of the biggest highlights of the trip was travelling with our own private driver and guide, organised through Exotic Destinations. It completely transformed the experience.

Instead of worrying about navigating unfamiliar roads or planning each day’s logistics, we could simply relax and enjoy the journey.

Along the way, we learnt about Sri Lanka’s history and culture, discovered hidden local spots, and stopped whenever something caught our attention.

It was effortless, and because every itinerary is tailor-made, every journey can be designed around your own interests, pace and travel style.

Into the Wild at Yala

As someone who loves wildlife, the safaris were a definite highlight.

Yala National Park exceeded every expectation.

We encountered elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, peacocks, countless bird species, and, incredibly, several leopards. The moment one of the park’s largest male leopards calmly walked just metres from our jeep is something I’ll never forget.

It’s one of those travel experiences that simply can’t be replicated.

A Breath of Fresh Mountain Air

The hill country revealed a completely different side of Sri Lanka.

The cooler climate provided a welcome contrast after the tropical heat, while endless emerald-green tea plantations stretched across the mountains in every direction.

Visiting historic tea estates and learning about Sri Lanka’s world-famous Ceylon tea added another fascinating layer to the journey, and the scenery was some of the most beautiful we experienced anywhere on the island.

Authentic Cuisine and Warm Smiles

And then there was the food.

Every meal was bursting with flavour, from fragrant curries and freshly caught seafood to tropical fruit picked at its peak.

I quickly discovered that Sri Lankans don’t hold back on the spice, but every dish was incredibly fresh, authentic, and absolutely delicious.

Combined with the genuine warmth and hospitality of the local people, we felt genuinely welcomed everywhere we went.

Why Sri Lanka Has It All

What surprised me most about Sri Lanka wasn’t just its incredible beauty, but how effortlessly it combines so many different experiences into one journey.

On a single journey, you can encounter incredible wildlife, explore ancient temples, wander through rolling tea plantations, relax on beautiful beaches, and connect with some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Few destinations offer so much variety while feeling so easy to explore.

Relaxed Elegance at Sea: From Venice to Barcelona on Queen Victoria

One look at Queen Victoria and the excitement became very real

Some holidays are about the destination. This one was just as much about the journey.

Our adventure began with a night in Venice, wandering canals, crossing charming bridges, and enjoying long Italian dinners as gondolas drifted by. It was the perfect introduction to what would become an unforgettable Mediterranean voyage.

The next morning, we transferred to Trieste, where Queen Victoria awaited. Seeing her for the first time was a special moment. Before long, we were onboard with a welcome drink in hand, ready to set sail.

Queen Victoria

The Beautiful Queen Victoria

A Perfect Blend of Sea Days and Shore Days

From day one, what struck me most was how relaxed everything felt. Despite travelling during the busy June season, the ship never felt crowded. There were always sunbeds available, peaceful corners to escape with a book, and endless sea views to enjoy. The sea days quickly became some of my favourite memories.

Each port brought something unique. We explored the coastal charm of Zadar, walked the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, admired the rich history and grand architecture of Valletta, and soaked up the sunshine and vibrant atmosphere of Palma de Mallorca. Every destination offered its own character and charm, while Queen Victoria provided a beautiful home between adventures.

Classic Cunard, Modern Fun

Life onboard was equally memorable. Cunard’s famous Afternoon Tea became a favourite ritual, whether enjoying warm scones and live music in the Queens Room or indulging in Champagne Afternoon Tea in The Verandah. The Gala Evenings added a touch of glamour without feeling formal or intimidating. Whether guests embraced the Red & Gold and Roaring Twenties themes or kept things simple, everyone felt comfortable.

There was always something happening onboard too from trivia competitions, live bands, talented musicians, karaoke, silent discos, and even football matches shown on the big screens. The atmosphere was lively when you wanted it to be, yet always relaxed and welcoming.

Is Cunard Too Formal? My Honest Take

Before this voyage, I’ll admit I had some preconceived ideas and beliefs about Cunard. Like many people, I envisioned ballgowns every evening, strict dress codes, and a cruise experience that might feel a little out of my comfort zone.

What I found was something completely different and far more enjoyable.

Yes, Cunard is elegant. The ships are beautiful, the service is exceptional, and there are lovely traditions like Afternoon Tea and Gala Evenings. But what surprised me most was how relaxed and welcoming it all felt.

There was never any pressure to dress a certain way or participate in every formal event. Some guests embraced the glamour of Gala Nights, while others simply dressed smartly and enjoyed the atmosphere. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying a trivia quiz, sipping champagne at afternoon tea, or dancing at the silent disco, everyone felt comfortable being themselves.

What Cunard offers isn’t stuffy formality, it’s a sense of occasion. It’s about enjoying the finer things at your own pace, without feeling judged or out of place.

My Final thought

From the canals of Venice to the streets of Barcelona, this voyage delivered beautiful destinations, unforgettable experiences, and the simple pleasure of travelling well. If you’re looking for a cruise that combines classic style, exceptional service, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, Queen Victoria delivers all of that and more!

And if you’re worried about needing a ballgown every night, don’t be. Just bring your sense of adventure and be prepared to relax in style while receiving exception true Cunard White Star Service.

Cosy Pubs & Parisian Wine: London and Paris in Autumn

Discovering London & Paris the Easy Way with Collette

If you’re dreaming of Europe in autumn, it’s hard to beat London and Paris in October.

With cooler weather, fewer crowds and beautiful autumn colours, it’s the perfect time to spend five days in London and five days in Paris, connected by the easy Eurostar train. Autumn is one of my favourite times to travel, and these two cities truly come alive during the season.

For this trip, I also wanted to experience one of our partner suppliers firsthand, so I decided to travel on Collette’s classic London & Paris tour. It was a fantastic way to experience both cities while having the convenience of accommodation, some meals, transport and a range of included sightseeing already organised.

The tour made travelling between the two cities seamless, especially with the Eurostar connection, and still allowed plenty of free time to explore at your own pace. I loved having the flexibility to wander through London’s iconic streets and get lost in the charming corners of Paris, while also enjoying the comfort and ease that comes with travelling on a guided tour.

It was a great option for travellers wanting a balance of independence and structure, particularly for first-time visitors to Europe or anyone looking for a stress-free way to experience two of Europe’s most iconic cities.

Getting lost in the streets of Paris is part of the magic

London: Pubs, History & Classic Sights

Spend your days in London exploring famous sights around Westminster, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Abbey. Watching the Changing of the Guard is a must for first-time visitors, and a walking tour is one of the best ways to discover London’s history and hidden corners. You may also want to immerse yourself in the British tradition and have a cuppa tea at The Orangery at Kensington Palace.

Covent Garden is another favourite, filled with street performers, cosy cafés, boutique shopping, and plenty of atmosphere.

And of course, no London trip is complete without experiencing the classic British pub scene. October is perfect pub weather – think cosy fireplaces, local ales, hearty meals, and proper fish and chips after a day of sightseeing.

If you love musical theatre, I highly recommend seeing a show in the West End. Many theatres offer affordable last-minute tickets to fill seats. I saw Mamma Mia! and it was incredible even from the back row.

Paris: Cafés, Culture & Romance

Paris in October is simply beautiful. The city feels effortlessly romantic as the leaves begin to turn and the crisp autumn air settles in. Wander along the Seine, admire iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, and spend slow afternoons café hopping with a glass of rosé or French wine in hand.

One of my favourite things to do in any new city is to simply wander the streets and get a little lost. Paris is perfect for that and every corner seems to lead to a charming local boutique, cosy bistro, hidden courtyard or beautiful sight you weren’t expecting to find. Some of the best moments come from stepping away from the itinerary and soaking up the atmosphere of the city itself.

Paris is also all about the food culture. From flaky croissants and cheese platters to classic French dishes like escargot, every meal feels like an experience. Whether you’re dining at a cosy bistro in Montmartre or enjoying wine beside the river as the city lights begin to glow, Paris has a way of slowing you down and making you savour every moment.

Alana embracing the Parisian way of life - escargot, a glass of rosé, and slowing down to savour the moment

Alana embracing the Parisian way of life – escargot, a glass of rosé, and slowing down to savour the moment

Why October?

I always find myself travelling most during the autumn season, and after visiting London and Paris in October, it’s easy to see why. The cooler temperatures make sightseeing far more comfortable, the summer crowds have eased, and the cities take on a completely different atmosphere with golden leaves, cosy cafés and slower-paced days.

It’s the kind of travel that feels more relaxed and immersive. You can wander through London’s parks without rushing from attraction to attraction or spend hours getting lost in the streets of Paris, discovering local boutiques and hidden bistros along the way. There’s something about autumn in Europe that makes you want to slow down and truly enjoy each moment.

October also strikes the perfect balance between still having plenty happening in the cities while avoiding the peak-season chaos. Whether it’s sipping wine beside the Seine, warming up in a traditional London pub, or simply enjoying crisp mornings exploring iconic sights, autumn creates such a memorable atmosphere for travel.

If London and Paris have been sitting on your travel list for a while, October might just be the perfect time to experience them. Sometimes the best trips happen when you embrace the slower season and allow yourself time to wander, explore and soak it all in.

Discovering Japan: One Mountain at a Time

Discovering Japan: One Mountain at a Time

There’s something incredibly valuable about stepping out from behind the desk and living the product you sell. Recently, I had the opportunity to do exactly that and joined Sno’n’Ski Holidays on a Japan ski trip alongside 30 fellow travel agents, exploring some of the country’s most iconic (and underrated) ski regions.

From powder days to bullet trains and unforgettable mountain experiences, this trip delivered on every level.

We kicked things off flying All Nippon Airways (ANA) from Sydney and it was the perfect start. Smooth, efficient, and consistently high service standards. For clients travelling to Japan, ANA is always a strong recommendation, and this just reinforced that.

Shizukuishi: Authentic Japan & Endless Powder

Our first stop was Shizukuishi Ski Resort in Akita and straight away, we struck gold.

It dumped snow the entire time we were there. Proper, deep, light Japow that just kept coming. The kind of conditions that turn good skiers into great ones and put permanent smiles on everyone’s faces.

Shizukuishi itself is a bit of a hidden gem – Located at the base of Mount Iwate it features wide, quiet runs and who doesn’t love no crowds, no chaos, no lift lines especially on a Pow Day!

It feels authentically Japanese, which is something many clients are now seeking, less commercial, more cultural.

One of the standout experiences here was cat skiing and accessing untouched terrain via snowcat. Fresh tracks every run, deep powder, and that rare feeling of having the mountain to yourself. It’s an incredible opportunity for clients wanting something beyond standard resort skiing without going full backcountry.

Exploring the terrain at Shizukuishi

Naeba: Big Resort Energy & Incredible Scenery

After experiencing Japan’s iconic Shinkansen (bullet train)- a must-do in itself – we arrived at Naeba, part of the well-known Prince Resorts network.

The contrast to Shizukuishi was immediate. Where Shizukuishi felt quiet and traditional, Naeba delivered a bigger, more vibrant resort experience. It is lively, well-developed, and full of options.

With over 20 dining options, from casual to sit down, access to two mountains Naeba and Kagura which is connected by the famous Dragondola.

The Dragondola itself is something special. I’ve been on plenty of gondolas over the years, but this one stands out. Stretching for kilometres across valleys and mountains, it offers incredible views the entire way, it’s as much an experience as it is transport

Once again, the ski gods delivered. Day one brought fresh powder, followed by a perfect bluebird day. Not only was the terrain incredible the après vibe was great. Naeba really comes alive off the slopes, with a fun, social après scene that rolls from afternoon into the evening – perfect for groups or anyone wanting more than just great skiing.

Stunning views from The Dragondola

Stunning views from The Dragondola

Shiga Kogen: Traditional, Vast & Unspoilt

Next stop was Shiga Kogen, Japan’s largest ski resort and a completely different feel again. Where Naeba is lively and energetic, Shiga Kogen is traditional, expansive, and refreshingly uncrowded. Made up of multiple interconnected ski areas, it offers a true sense of exploration. You’re not just skiing one resort, but an entire alpine region.

What really stands out here is the sheer variety of terrain and the ability to ski from one area to the next without ever feeling rushed or overcrowded. The snow quality is consistently excellent, with light, dry powder and well-groomed runs that suit confident intermediates through to advanced skiers. There’s also a strong focus on nature, with wide-open landscapes, stunning mountain views, and even the chance to spot local wildlife.

Close by you have the Jigokudani Monkey Park where you can watch the famous Snow Monkey’s bathe in the natural hot springs. Perfect for a rest day activity.

Hakuba: Japan’s most loved ski destination

Hakuba is one of those destinations that consistently exceeds expectations. Nestled in the Japanese Alps, this ski region offers access to multiple resorts on one lift pass, making it ideal for both first-time Japan skiers and seasoned powder chasers. The terrain is incredibly diverse with gentle beginner runs, perfectly groomed cruisers, and some seriously exciting off-piste for the more adventurous.

Accommodation options are just as varied. You’ve got everything from traditional Japanese lodges (ryokans) where you can experience authentic hospitality, to luxury ski-in/ski-out hotels and self-contained apartments perfect for groups. There really is something for everyone in Hakuba.

And then there’s the food. Hakuba’s dining scene is seriously underrated. Think fresh sushi, sizzling wagyu, cosy izakayas, and of course, endless bowls of ramen. Après-ski here isn’t about wild parties (though there are bars if that’s your vibe), it’s more about unwinding, good food, and great company.

Getting there is easier than most expect. A smooth bullet train or bus transfer from Tokyo gets you into the mountains within a few hours, making it a seamless addition to a Japan itinerary. Hakuba is a perfect add on to your Japan itinerary if you have time up your sleeve and want to get back on the skis or try something new.

If Japan has been on your list, now is the perfect time to go. With the Japanese Yen currently offering great value against the Australian Dollar, your money goes that much further.

I’m already planning my next trip – there’s just so much to see and do. From the incredible food and rich culture to the warmth of the people, Japan truly ticks every box. It’s a destination that stays with you, and I can’t wait to return.

Into the Heart of Sri Lanka with Wendy Wu

Inside the Tea Plantations

It was my first time visiting Sri Lanka, and I couldn’t wait to explore this vibrant, diverse island. Travelling on a Wendy Wu Tailormade itinerary made the trip truly special, giving us the flexibility to follow our guide’s expert suggestions while gaining insider knowledge about local life, culture, and hidden gems. From the moment we left Colombo, I felt a mix of excitement and curiosity, keen to wander through the gentle hills, foggy valleys, and colourful communities that make Sri Lanka special.

As we left Colombo, we wound through misty valleys and rolling hills to reach Labookellie Tea Estate, the heart of Ceylon tea. Our Wendy Wu tour guide shared fascinating insights about Sri Lanka’s tea culture as we wandered vibrant green fields, toured the factory to see how black, green, and white teas are crafted, and if you like, can try your hand at picking tea leaves. Each picker harvests around 20kg daily! We learned how black and green teas are fermented for strength and caffeine, while delicate white tea has little to none. Tasting a freshly brewed cup right at the source was the perfect finale.

A skilled tea picker carefully selects leaves by hand, preserving the quality and tradition behind every cup.

Crossing the Iconic Nine Arch Bridge

Our journey from Ambewela to Demodara by local train was one of the most memorable experiences of our Sri Lanka trip. Travelling just like the British did during colonial times in the late 1800s, we settled into our reserved seats, secured thanks to our Wendy Wu guide, who navigated the tricky ticketing process (these trains often sell out!). What made the ride truly special was how authentic it felt: with open doors and windows, the breeze rushed past us as we glimpsed everyday life in villages, passed cascading waterfalls, and drifted through endless tea estates.

The highlight of the journey was crossing the iconic Nine Arch Bridge in Ella. Built during the British colonial era between 1913 and 1921, this architectural marvel stands 24 meters high and spans 91 meters across a deep valley. Constructed entirely from stone, brick, and cement, without any steel, the bridge is a testament to engineering ingenuity of the time. Surrounded by lush greenery and misty hills, the view from the bridge was nothing short of breathtaking. Every turn of the track offered a new postcard-perfect scene, making it clear why this train ride is considered one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic experiences. It wasn’t just a train ride, it was a full immersion into the country’s landscapes, history, and way of life.

Wildlife Magic: Elephant Transit Centre

Visiting Sri Lanka’s Elephant Transit Centre was a beautiful surprise, as it wasn’t part of our original itinerary, our Wendy Wu guide suggested the stop, and it turned out to be a fantastic addition! Located near Udawalawe, the centre rescues orphaned and injured elephants and cares for them until they’re ready to return to the wild. Watching the gentle giants play, interact, and grow was truly heartwarming.

The experience is perfect for kids, too. During the daily feeding sessions, visitors can see calves of all sizes learning essential survival skills, each with its own playful personality. Walking along the viewing platforms, families get up close to these majestic creatures, making it both educational and unforgettable. Thanks to this impromptu stop, we left with memories of wildlife, conservation, and a little magic that will stay with us forever.

A True Wildlife Adventure in Sri Lanka

Before breakfast, around 5:30am, we set out for morning game drive in Yala National Park, one of the best places in the world to spot leopards. Our Wendy Wu guide had thoughtfully purchased our park tickets the night before, giving us quicker entry and a head start on the wildlife. Bouncing along in the rugged safari-style vehicle, I felt like we were on a true adventure, completely immersed in nature. We scanned the bushy landscapes for leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, crocodiles, mongoose, monitor lizard, spotted deer, water buffalo, and a dazzling variety of birds and we were fortunate enough to see many of these on our drives. Even lucky enough to experience an elephant coming surprisingly close to our vehicle.

The early morning and late afternoon proved most rewarding for sightings. Just as we were about to leave the park on our afternoon drive, we spotted a leopard perched in a tree at sunset, its golden coat glowing in the fading light. Being so close to these incredible animals, experiencing their world firsthand, made Yala an unforgettable and awe-inspiring adventure.

Looking back, my favorite moments were the train journey through lush hills and the unforgettable wildlife experiences, from Yala’s leopards to the elephants at the transit centre. Sri Lanka left me wanting to return, this time with my children, to explore even more of its natural beauty and rich culture. I would encourage anyone to visit in the near future, while it remains relatively undiscovered by mass tourism. Traveling with Wendy Wu ensured we were in the hands of knowledgeable local guides, making the journey seamless, enriching, and unforgettable allowing us to truly appreciate the country, its people, and way of life.

Sri Lanka Solo with Intrepid Premium

Inside Intrepid Premium

Wild. Green. Grounded.

Sri Lanka surprised me.

It’s busy, colourful and alive, but nobody feels rushed. It’s what I can only describe as chaotically calm. Jungle everywhere. Fresh food. Community at the centre of everything.

What struck me most was the gratitude. The quiet pride. The way people genuinely welcome you.

If you are going to do Sri Lanka, do it properly. Intrepid Premium is the way.

The Premium Difference

We were a group of 12. A mix of solo travellers and couples, including Intrepid loyalists on their fourteenth trip. Structured but never rigid. You move together, but you always have space.

From the moment we landed, it felt seamless. Transfers organised. Luggage handled. A beautiful local guide who gave us real insight into why things did and did not happen in Sri Lanka’s history.

Every morning he handed us a freshly picked flower before we boarded the bus. Small detail. Big impact.

Sigiria Rock

Sigiriya: Tough but Worth It

The climb up Sigiriya Rock is not easy. It’s hot, there are stairs, and at the very top it becomes single file in both directions.

But it is completely doable.

There are natural breaks. You go at your own pace. And when you reach the summit, it opens into wide views over endless green. Being in a group means you will have some of your group at each portion of the journey. No awkwardness or shame in taking it as your pace!

I felt accomplished standing up there. Small in the best possible way.

Wildlife, Done Ethically

We visited Minneriya National Park and saw elephants properly. In their space. No chaos. No crowding.

You notice the difference when you travel with a licensed, responsible operator.

Monkeys are everywhere. Completely wild. Completely unbothered. Our tour guide navigated the game reserve with the animal’s welfare in mind. We were sitting silently next to multi-generational families of elephants, softly blinking back at us.

It felt respectful and intimate all at once.

Nanu Oya Scenic Train Ride

Yes, it really is as beautiful as Instagram says.

The train from Nanu Oya winds slowly through rolling tea plantations, misty hills and dense jungle that feels almost unreal in its colour. Bright green layered against soft mountain fog. Tiny villages passing by. Women in colourful saris walking along the tracks. It feels cinematic.

What I loved most was the pace. It is not rushed. It gently moves through the landscape, giving you time to actually take it in instead of just photographing it.

With Intrepid Premium, we had reserved seating and space to breathe. No overcrowded carriages. No fighting for door space. Other cabins had locals leaning out of open doors and packed aisles, but ours felt calm and comfortable.

Three hours was the perfect length. Long enough to experience it fully, but not so long that you felt tired or cramped. And at the end, our transfer was waiting, so the journey flowed seamlessly into the next stay.

The Stays

Premium in Sri Lanka really shines in the accommodation.

Amaya Lake in Dambulla was peaceful and surrounded by nature, with elephant crossings nearby.

Amaya Hills in Kandy sits above the city with incredible views. We were there during a Buddhist celebration with fire dancing and fireworks. It felt special.

The Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya is historic and elegant. High tea, champagne, gardens, character – and where Queen Elizabeth herself used to stay!

A solo traveller’s favourite in The Middle East

Touchdown in The Middle East

There’s something exciting about arriving in a new country late at night. It’s quiet, the air feels different, and you’re stepping into the unknown. Flying from Paris to Doha was smooth and comfortable, and even arriving close to midnight, the airport experience was effortless. Hamad International Airport is modern, easy to navigate, and incredibly efficient. Within no time, I was on my way to the hotel via transfer, watching the city lights glide past the window – my first glimpse of Doha’s sleek skyline.

As a solo traveller, that first night matters. I want to know the city feels safe. I want to know getting from A to B is easy. Doha ticked every box.

Staying in the Heart of It: Central Inn Souq Waqif

I checked into the Central Inn Souq Waqif, and honestly, the location is what makes it. Staying near Souq Waqif means you’re in walking distance to one of Doha’s most iconic cultural precincts – full of life, lantern-lit alleyways, and the scent of spices and shisha drifting through the air.

The best part? Even though it’s bustling, it never feels chaotic. It feels curated, safe, and welcoming – especially for someone travelling alone.

An Afternoon of Magic: Half-Day Desert Safari

You can’t come to Qatar without seeing the desert, and my half-day desert safari was a highlight.

One minute you’re leaving the city behind, and the next you’re surrounded by rolling golden dunes that stretch forever. The dune bashing is thrilling and then it slows down into moments of complete stillness, where the desert feels almost silent. I was able to quad bike through the desert which was a highlight. I highly recommend planning your desert safari for the afternoon and seeing the sun set over the golden desert dunes.

It’s adventure, culture, and scenery all in one… and it’s the perfect short experience if you don’t have a full day to spare.

Doha City Tour: Where Old Meets Ultra-Modern

Back in Doha, I joined a city tour to get my bearings (and I always recommend this if it’s your first time in a destination to get the lay of the land).

Doha has this fascinating contrast, and something I haven’t seen before – traditional cultural spaces alongside futuristic architecture. One moment you’re wandering heritage-style streets, and the next you’re driving past gleaming skyscrapers that look like they belong in a sci-fi movie. A perfect balance of old and new.

There’s so much to appreciate in Doha – it’s clean, organised, and beautifully designed. You can feel that it’s a city that’s proud of what it is and where it’s headed.

The Food Alone Is Worth the Trip

Now let’s talk about the part I secretly plan entire itineraries around… the food. I truly believe you have to experience authentic local food to really understand the countries culture.

Doha is a dream if you love Middle Eastern flavours. Every meal felt rich and comforting, with warm spices and beautiful presentation. I ate plenty of:

  • hummus and fresh bread (dangerously addictive)

  • grilled meats and kebabs

  • spiced rice dishes

  • sweet baklava and cardamom coffee

Even dining solo felt easy – service is warm, restaurants are welcoming, and it’s common to see people dining casually on their own, especially in Souq Waqif.

Shopping in Souq Waqif: Sensory Overload in the Best Way

If you love shopping (or just browsing), Souq Waqif is everything you want it to be- it’s atmospheric, authentic, and full of character.

You can wander for hours through narrow laneways filled with:

  • spices and dried fruit

  • perfumes and oils

  • jewellery and textiles

  • handmade souvenirs and crafts

It’s one of those places where you walk in for “just a quick look” and walk out two hours later with a bag full of treasures and a new appreciation for how fun shopping can be when it feels cultural.

Solo Travel in Doha: Safe, Secure, and Comfortable

I’ll be honest – a lot of my clients ask about safety when it comes to the Middle East, especially solo travellers. And after experiencing Doha firsthand, I can confidently say: Doha is one of the safest cities I’ve visited.

The streets are well-lit, public areas feel secure, locals are respectful, and the overall environment is calm. Even walking around Souq Waqif at night felt comfortable – not once did I feel uneasy or out of place. And that’s something I don’t say lightly.

Doha is one of those destinations that surprises you. It’s not just a stopover city – it’s a place worth travelling for. With a blend of culture, desert landscapes, incredible food, and high-end shopping, it’s ideal for:

  • solo travellers wanting a safe cultural escape

  • couples looking for something different

  • anyone needing a short, fascinating add-on to Europe.

If you’re flying to or from Europe, it’s a brilliant short escape that feels completely different to anything nearby – and yet incredibly accessible.

Siem Reap and a Visit to Angkor Wat

From the moment we arrived in Siem Reap, everything was seamless thanks to Travelmarvel. We were greeted with a stress-free airport pickup and taken to the stunning Shinta Mani Angkor – A luxury boutique hotel in the peaceful Royal District. With its exceptional service, and meaningful local initiatives, it was the perfect base for our stay.

One of the most unforgettable experiences was our half-day Private journey through the UNESCO Angkor temple complex. We started at Angkor Wat, where the towering spires and intricate carvings brought the grandeur of the Khmer Empire to life. At Bayon Temple, the mysterious smiling faces carved into stone left us speechless. We ended at Ta Prohm, where massive tree roots weave through ancient ruins. A magical, almost otherworldly scene.

The combination of incredible history, luxurious comfort, and thoughtful travel planning made this small part of the journey truly unforgettable.

As part of our Travelmarvel Mekong Cruise, we took a deeply moving excursion to one of Cambodia’s most infamous and historical sites. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) and the Killing Fields with a local guide the entire journey.

This was one of the most sobering and emotionally powerful experiences of the entire journey. It’s hard to believe that the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime happened less than 50 years ago, and that the scars are still so fresh for the Cambodian people.

We started at S-21, a former high school turned prison and interrogation centre. Walking through the classrooms turned cells, I was struck by the chilling fact that over 20,000 people were imprisoned here, but only 12 survived. Once prisoners were found “guilty,” they were transported under cover of night to the Killing Fields.

At the Killing Fields, we walked slowly along the boardwalks winding through the grounds, where mass graves were uncovered. The atmosphere was heavy and reflective, as the space serves as a powerful reminder of the scale of the tragedy.

What stayed with me most was how no one was spared. Men, women, and children all suffered the same brutal fate. Despite this dark chapter, the resilience of the Cambodian people shines through. Visiting these sites was heartbreaking but deeply important. A history that must never be forgotten.

Sa Dec by Sampan

On Day 7 of Our TravelMarvel River Journey, We took a boat ride to Sa Dec by Sampan (Traditional Wooden Flat-Bottomed Boat), cruising past floating fish farms that dotted the calm waters. Arriving in town, I explored the colourful market on foot. A hectic, bustling scene filled with locals going about their day – Better watch out for Mopeds going in every direction. The market was incredibly lively, overflowing with “very fresh” seafood, poultry, fruits, and vegetables — all local delicacies that reflected the vibrant food culture of the region.

As I wandered through Sa Dec, I visited the Huynh Thuy Le Old House, a beautifully preserved heritage home that gave me a fascinating glimpse into the area’s rich history and unique architecture. What really caught my eye were the waterside houses along the riverbank—so close to the water that a high tide would flood their bottom levels. It was a striking, picturesque reminder of how deeply life here is connected to the waterways.

This whole experience felt authentic and immersive, a true taste of the daily rhythms and rich traditions of Sa Dec.

A Week on the Mekong with TravelMarvel

Travelling along the Mekong River with Travelmarvel was an unforgettable adventure through stunning landscapes. From farming regions to lively cities and peaceful waterside villages. The best part? Easy access to sights right from the ship. Sometimes we stepped off via gangplank straight into bustling markets, other times we took small sampan boats to experience local life up close.

Onboard, the food was a delicious highlight, with Cambodian and Vietnamese chefs crafting authentic dishes that celebrated local flavors. The ship’s traditional Asian design made me feel truly immersed in the destination, while the friendly staff shared stories about life on the river.

There was a great balance of relaxation and activities, whether lounging by the pool, enjoying a spa treatment, or joining fun classes like spring roll making and fruit carving. With comfortable spaces like a sundeck, lounge, and library, the ship was the perfect base for exploring the Mekong’s rich culture and history.

This journey with Travelmarvel was more than a cruise. It was a deep dive into Southeast Asia’s vibrant heart.

Cruising the Danube with Riverside Luxury Cruises

Cruising the Danube with Riverside

A Week on the Danube Like No Other

I don’t think I’ve ever crammed so much charm, history, and straight-up fun into one week as I did on this Danube River cruise.

And the timing? Couldn’t have been better. The whole thing lined up with Hungary’s National Day, which meant parades, traditions, and the most epic fireworks show over Budapest – all from the deck of the ship.

Thank you, Riverside Luxury Cruises, this is something I will never forget.

Vienna’s Grand Charm

We kicked things off in Vienna, and wow… this city is like walking through a postcard. Palaces, opera houses, and ridiculously pretty streets everywhere you turn. After settling onto the Riverside Mozart (yes, it’s as fancy as it sounds), I did my favourite “new city ritual” – ditched the map, picked a random street, and just wandered.

That night, we had our first dinner on board, met the crew, and got chatting with other travellers. Within a few hours it already felt like we were in for something special.

Vienna

Quirky and Underrated

Next up was Bratislava in Slovakia, which was such a fun contrast to Vienna. Smaller, quirkier, and way more laid-back.

The Old Town is full of colourful little houses and cobblestone lanes – total storybook. Some people jumped on bikes to explore, but I couldn’t pass up a wine tasting at a 16th-century castle. Bratislava feels a little under the radar compared to other capitals, which made it feel extra cool to discover.

Cruising into Hungary

Then it was onto Hungary, with stops in Esztergom and Visegrád before sailing into Budapest. Esztergom’s basilica is massive – you can spot it from forever away – and inside it’s jaw-dropping. Visegrád had this medieval fortress perched above the river with beautiful views of The Danube River.

But nothing, and I mean nothing, beat the moment we cruised into Budapest at night.

The bridges lit up, the Parliament glowing, the whole skyline sparkling… one of those travel moments where you just stand there grinning like, “is this real life?”

National Day Magic

And then Budapest itself. Absolute highlight. You can tour Parliament, wander Fisherman’s Bastion (which looks like a Disney castle), or just relax along the riverbanks.

But being there for National Day? I felt so honoured to be able to experience their National Day with the locals. The whole city came alive with music, food stalls, and celebrations. I ate my bodyweight in lángos (fried bread smothered in garlic oil, sour cream, and cheese – I’m still daydreaming about this), tried some local drinks, and joined the crowd clapping along to traditional dancing. The energy was excellent.

The grand finale? Fireworks over the Danube. We had dinner on the top deck of the ship, and as the city lit up and the fireworks exploded, it felt like Budapest was putting on a private show just for us. Pure magic.

More Surprises Along the Way

Even after Budapest, the cruise kept surprising me. In Mohács, I learned about their wild Busójárás Carnival traditions – think scary masks, costumes, and folklore. Then in Kalocsa, I got a paprika masterclass (they don’t call it the Paprika Capital of the World for nothing).

Pécs turned out to be one of the highlights. The old town is full of charm, with pastel streets and lively squares, but the star of the show was the Pécs Cathedral. Riverside Luxury Cruises treated us to a private organ performance inside, which gave me goosebumps.

A Trip I’ll Never Forget

By the time we sailed back into Budapest, I was torn between being full of gratitude and not wanting it to end. From Vienna’s elegance to Bratislava’s charm, to Budapest’s full-blown celebrations, every stop had its own flavour.

If you’re ever thinking about a Danube cruise, think Riverside Luxury Cruises, and trust me- try to line it up with Hungary’s National Day.

It takes an already incredible trip and adds a whole other layer of magic. I came home with paprika, wine, and a whole stack of memories I’ll be holding onto forever.

Snowy Peaks & Southern Charm

Queenstown, New Zealand. Even saying the name out loud brings back a rush of cold air, the crisp scent of pine trees, and that first glorious moment when I clipped onto my skis and looked out across the Remarkables.

My Queenstown ski holiday was everything I hoped for and a bit more chaotic, thrilling, and beautiful than I’d expected.

A view of the mountains - this never ceases to amaze me

A view of the mountains – this never ceases to amaze me

I arrived in early September, the start of Spring skiing. Queenstown greeted me with its usual dramatic flair: snow-capped mountains, a glassy lake, and that buzz of energy that seems to linger in the air, like the whole town is running on excitement and espresso. My accommodation was in Fernhill at The Mercure Hotel, and I recommend always upgrading to a Lake View room when in Queenstown there is something special about opening your curtains in the morning to the beautiful view of the lake and mountains.

Upgrading to a Lake View Room is always worth it

Skiing was obviously the main event. The Remarkables and Coronet Peak were my go-to mountains. Both are less than an hour from town, with well-organized shuttles, and offer very different vibes.

Coronet Peak felt more like a local mountain, less intimidating, with night skiing and a relaxed atmosphere. If you are a first-time skier, they have a great beginner’s area and a gondola that can be taken up to a viewpoint so you can experience the top of the mountain without having to ski down.

The Remarkables, though, was where I felt most alive. Wide open bowls, narrow chutes, and powder that actually made me laugh out loud as I flew down it. I highly recommend booking an instructor or guide, even if you are an experienced skier/snowboarder.

The guides have expert knowledge of the mountain and know all the runs, and can take you on runs that you would feel comfortable on, or perhaps you would like a little challenge and like to try a little blue or black run.

Off the slopes, Queenstown has plenty to offer. Fergburger is everything people say it is and moreyes, the line is long, but the food is next-level. I also spent an evening soaking in the Onsen Hot Pools, which overlook the Shotover River. Imagine sitting in steaming water with snow falling gently around you. That’s the kind of moment you don’t forget.

The town itself is small but lively. I found myself slipping into a routine: ski all day, hit a local pub or restaurant in the evening, and there are so many dining options. Whether you are going with your friends and would like to experience a local pub or if you are traveling with your family and prefer a cosy restaurant. There is something for everyone and all are within walking distance.

If you’re craving a thrill that’s both terrifying and exhilarating, the Shotover Canyon Swing is an absolute must. At 109 metres high with a 60-metre freefall, it’s the world’s highest cliff jump, and it delivers every ounce of that promise. The experience begins with a heart-pounding moment as you step off the platform, plummeting into the canyon before the swing arcs you into a massive 200-metre arc over the Shotover River.

What makes it unforgettable isn’t just the height or the speed – it’s the freedom to choose how you jump. From backflips to tandem swings, the options are as wild as your imagination. The guides are pros, making sure you feel safe and psyched, whether it’s your first swing or your fifth. It’s a rush like no other, and for anyone chasing that perfect blend of fear and fun, it’s a Queenstown highlight you won’t regret.

Canyon Swing

By the end of the trip, my legs were sore, my gear was slightly worse for wear, and my phone was full of mountain photos I knew couldn’t really do it justice. Queenstown is a place where nature shows off and adventure never really stops. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or just looking for a winter escape, this little alpine town at the bottom of the world is absolutely worth it.
