Queenstown, New Zealand. Even saying the name out loud brings back a rush of cold air, the crisp scent of pine trees, and that first glorious moment when I clipped onto my skis and looked out across the Remarkables. 

My Queenstown ski holiday was everything I hoped for and a bit more chaotic, thrilling, and beautiful than I’d expected.

I arrived in early September, the start of Spring skiing. Queenstown greeted me with its usual dramatic flair: snow-capped mountains, a glassy lake, and that buzz of energy that seems to linger in the air, like the whole town is running on excitement and espresso. My accommodation was in Fernhill at The Mercure Hotel, and I recommend always upgrading to a Lake View room when in Queenstown there is something special about opening your curtains in the morning to the beautiful view of the lake and mountains. 

Skiing was obviously the main event. The Remarkables and Coronet Peak were my go-to mountains. Both are less than an hour from town, with well-organized shuttles, and offer very different vibes.  

Coronet Peak felt more like a local mountain, less intimidating, with night skiing and a relaxed atmosphere. If you are a first-time skier, they have a great beginner’s area and a gondola that can be taken up to a viewpoint so you can experience the top of the mountain without having to ski down.   

The Remarkables, though, was where I felt most alive. Wide open bowls, narrow chutes, and powder that actually made me laugh out loud as I flew down it. I highly recommend booking an instructor or guide, even if you are an experienced skier/snowboarder.

The guides have expert knowledge of the mountain and know all the runs, and can take you on runs that you would feel comfortable on, or perhaps you would like a little challenge and like to try a little blue or black run.  

Off the slopes, Queenstown has plenty to offer. Fergburger is everything people say it is and more – yes, the line is long, but the food is next-level. I also spent an evening soaking in the Onsen Hot Pools, which overlook the Shotover River. Imagine sitting in steaming water with snow falling gently around you. That’s the kind of moment you don’t forget. 

The town itself is small but lively. I found myself slipping into a routine: ski all day, hit a local pub or restaurant in the evening, and there are so many dining options. Whether you are going with your friends and would like to experience a local pub or if you are traveling with your family and prefer a cosy restaurant. There is something for everyone and all are within walking distance.  

If you’re craving a thrill that’s both terrifying and exhilarating, the Shotover Canyon Swing is an absolute must. At 109 metres high with a 60-metre freefall, it’s the world’s highest cliff jump, and it delivers every ounce of that promise. The experience begins with a heart-pounding moment as you step off the platform, plummeting into the canyon before the swing arcs you into a massive 200-metre arc over the Shotover River.  

What makes it unforgettable isn’t just the height or the speed – it’s the freedom to choose how you jump. From backflips to tandem swings, the options are as wild as your imagination. The guides are pros, making sure you feel safe and psyched, whether it’s your first swing or your fifth. It’s a rush like no other, and for anyone chasing that perfect blend of fear and fun, it’s a Queenstown highlight you won’t regret. 

By the end of the trip, my legs were sore, my gear was slightly worse for wear, and my phone was full of mountain photos I knew couldn’t really do it justice. Queenstown is a place where nature shows off and adventure never really stops. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or just looking for a winter escape, this little alpine town at the bottom of the world is absolutely worth it.
