Relaxed Elegance at Sea: From Venice to Barcelona on Queen Victoria

One look at Queen Victoria and the excitement became very real

Some holidays are about the destination. This one was just as much about the journey.

Our adventure began with a night in Venice, wandering canals, crossing charming bridges, and enjoying long Italian dinners as gondolas drifted by. It was the perfect introduction to what would become an unforgettable Mediterranean voyage.

The next morning, we transferred to Trieste, where Queen Victoria awaited. Seeing her for the first time was a special moment. Before long, we were onboard with a welcome drink in hand, ready to set sail.

Queen Victoria

The Beautiful Queen Victoria

A Perfect Blend of Sea Days and Shore Days

From day one, what struck me most was how relaxed everything felt. Despite travelling during the busy June season, the ship never felt crowded. There were always sunbeds available, peaceful corners to escape with a book, and endless sea views to enjoy. The sea days quickly became some of my favourite memories.

Each port brought something unique. We explored the coastal charm of Zadar, walked the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, admired the rich history and grand architecture of Valletta, and soaked up the sunshine and vibrant atmosphere of Palma de Mallorca. Every destination offered its own character and charm, while Queen Victoria provided a beautiful home between adventures.

Classic Cunard, Modern Fun

Life onboard was equally memorable. Cunard’s famous Afternoon Tea became a favourite ritual, whether enjoying warm scones and live music in the Queens Room or indulging in Champagne Afternoon Tea in The Verandah. The Gala Evenings added a touch of glamour without feeling formal or intimidating. Whether guests embraced the Red & Gold and Roaring Twenties themes or kept things simple, everyone felt comfortable.

There was always something happening onboard too from trivia competitions, live bands, talented musicians, karaoke, silent discos, and even football matches shown on the big screens. The atmosphere was lively when you wanted it to be, yet always relaxed and welcoming.

Is Cunard Too Formal? My Honest Take

Before this voyage, I’ll admit I had some preconceived ideas and beliefs about Cunard. Like many people, I envisioned ballgowns every evening, strict dress codes, and a cruise experience that might feel a little out of my comfort zone.

What I found was something completely different and far more enjoyable.

Yes, Cunard is elegant. The ships are beautiful, the service is exceptional, and there are lovely traditions like Afternoon Tea and Gala Evenings. But what surprised me most was how relaxed and welcoming it all felt.

There was never any pressure to dress a certain way or participate in every formal event. Some guests embraced the glamour of Gala Nights, while others simply dressed smartly and enjoyed the atmosphere. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying a trivia quiz, sipping champagne at afternoon tea, or dancing at the silent disco, everyone felt comfortable being themselves.

What Cunard offers isn’t stuffy formality, it’s a sense of occasion. It’s about enjoying the finer things at your own pace, without feeling judged or out of place.

My Final thought

From the canals of Venice to the streets of Barcelona, this voyage delivered beautiful destinations, unforgettable experiences, and the simple pleasure of travelling well. If you’re looking for a cruise that combines classic style, exceptional service, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, Queen Victoria delivers all of that and more!

And if you’re worried about needing a ballgown every night, don’t be. Just bring your sense of adventure and be prepared to relax in style while receiving exception true Cunard White Star Service.

There’s something truly special about exploring the British Isles and Iceland by sea. Scotland’s Historic Charm & Highland Wildlife

Our first ports of call showcased the beauty and character of Scotland. From the historic streets of Edinburgh to the rugged coastlines of Invergordon and the Shetland Islands, every stop offered something unique. One of the highlights was meeting Scotland’s famous Highland cows, affectionately known as “hairy coos”, whose shaggy coats and gentle nature made for a memorable Scottish experience.

One of Scotland’s most iconic sights – the charming Highland cow, affectionately known as a “hairy coo”, greeted us during our visit to Invergordon.

Norway’s Stunning Coastal Beauty

Crossing the North Sea, we arrived in Norway, where dramatic fjords, colourful villages and stunning coastal scenery awaited. The highlight was undoubtedly Ålesund, renowned for its striking Art Nouveau architecture and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding islands and waterways. The scenery throughout this part of the voyage was simply breathtaking and perfectly showcased the natural beauty of Scandinavia.

Iceland’s Dramatic Landscapes

Iceland provided a spectacular finale to the journey. From the colourful village of Seyðisfjörður and the scenic beauty of Akureyri to the remote landscapes of Ísafjörður, every port revealed a different side of this extraordinary country. The voyage concluded in Reykjavik, where Iceland’s unique blend of volcanic landscapes, geothermal wonders and Nordic culture provided the perfect ending to an unforgettable Oceania Cruises experience.

Cruising along the Douro with APT on MS Estrela

There’s something quietly enriching about slowing down—and that’s exactly what I found on a 7-night journey along the Douro River with APT aboard the MS Estrela.
The moment we arrived into Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, I could already sense the charm that would define the journey ahead. With its colourful riverside buildings, historic architecture, and relaxed atmosphere, Porto felt like the perfect introduction to what was to come—a place where old-world beauty meets effortless elegance. Spending 2 days here I really understood why Porto has become so popular, especially in these last few years with tourism. Not only is it an all-round cool city, it also has an atmospheric historic core, a lovely riverfront esplanade and the best part, Porto has also retained it’s local, artsy, folksy vibe, despite its recent economic growth.
Me & Porto

Taking in a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of Porto with APT’s luxurious Douro River Cruise, where colourful riverside buildings, historic landmarks, and the sparkling Douro River create one of Portugal’s most unforgettable cityscapes.

Unforgettable Moment

One of APT’s Signature Experiences in Porto is nothing short of unforgettable. Stepping into the magnificent Palácio da Bolsa, you’re immersed in the magic of an intimate fado performance held in the breathtaking Arabian Hall—an emotional, soul-stirring experience that stays with you long after you leave.

Fado Perf

Experiencing an intimate and unforgettable Fado performance inside the magnificent Palácio da Bolsa was a true highlight of APT’s exclusive Signature Experiences — an evening filled with soul-stirring music, Portuguese culture, and timeless elegance.

From the moment we departed Porto the pace of life seemed to soften. Each day unfolded gently, with the river guiding us through a landscape that felt almost painted—rolling hills layered with lush, terraced vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see. It wasn’t just beautiful; it was immersive. Everywhere you turned, there was another postcard-perfect view waiting.
What stayed with me most was the connection to the region’s rich wine heritage. Portugal’s famous port wines weren’t just something to taste—they were something to experience. Sipping a glass while overlooking the very vineyards where it was produced added a depth and appreciation that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. For anyone with even a passing love of wine, this journey feels like stepping into its story.
Pinhao

Exploring the iconic Pinhão Railway Station with APT, one of the Douro Valley’s most beautiful landmarks, where intricate blue-and-white tiles tell the story of Portugal’s rich wine heritage and timeless riverside charm.

You soon appreciate why Douro river ships are designed on a more intimate scale than their Rhine counterparts. The river’s smaller locks lend themselves to boutique vessels, resulting in a more exclusive and relaxed experience. APT’s MS Estrela captures this perfectly, with a beautifully designed sun deck that stands out as one of the most luxurious and inviting on the river.
Life onboard the MS Estrela mirrored the beauty of the surroundings. Thoughtful service, refined dining, and a sense of calm luxury created the perfect balance between indulgence and exploration. Everything about the experience made you feel like a guest rather than a number, and the slower rhythm of cruising along the Douro gently encourages you to do the same. I found myself noticing more, appreciating more, and connecting more deeply with the journey.
Me On The Boat

Sailing aboard the elegant MS Estrela along Portugal’s enchanting Douro River, I spent my days watching storybook villages and sun-drenched vineyards drift by — a truly unforgettable journey through one of Europe’s most breathtaking wine regions.

As the journey carried on toward Madrid, I found myself reflecting on how rare it is to travel in a way that truly allows you to absorb a place, rather than simply pass through it. This wasn’t just a river cruise—it was a reminder of the beauty in slowing down.
If you’re drawn to fine wine, breathtaking landscapes, and travel that feels both luxurious and meaningful, the Douro River might just be calling your name.

Antarctica with HX: A World beyond words

An Experience Beyond Expectation

Antarctica is one of those rare places that stops you in your tracks, not just for its beauty, but for the sheer scale and stillness of it. It’s vast, untouched, and humbling in a way that’s difficult to put into words. A destination that doesn’t just impress you, it quietly shifts your perspective.

My recent expedition with HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) on their Highlights of Antarctica itinerary, sailing onboard the MS Roald Amundsen, was nothing short of extraordinary. It wasn’t just the landscapes or the wildlife, it was the way the entire journey unfolded, layered with meaning, knowledge, and moments that genuinely stayed with me.

This is not a traditional cruise. It’s an experience built around exploration, understanding, and connection, both to the destination and to the environment itself.

Icebergs of the Lamaire Channel

Icebergs of the Lamaire Channel

The Journey South

The journey began in Buenos Aires, before flying south to Ushuaia, a place often referred to as the end of the world. From Ushuaia, we set sail across the legendary Drake Passage. A crossing that’s often spoken about with a mix of caution and curiosity, known as either the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake,” depending on conditions. I was incredibly fortunate to experience the latter!

The seas were calm and glassy, stretching endlessly around us and making for a pretty surreal start to the journey. It allowed time to settle in, to absorb the anticipation, and to begin understanding just how remote and remarkable this part of the world really is.

These days at sea were far from just a crossing. They were an introduction, not just to Antarctica, but to the philosophy behind HX. The Expedition Team began to layer the experience with knowledge through briefings, wildlife insights, and storytelling, that transformed what lay ahead into something far more meaningful.

Tip: Even if you’re lucky enough to experience a “Drake Lake,” conditions can change quickly and it’s always better to be prepared, so is worth packing seasickness tablets just in case! better to be safe than sorry I always say.

Experiencing Antarctica

Arriving in Antarctica is something you never forget. Towering icebergs, vast glaciers, and a stillness that’s difficult to put into words set the scene from the very beginning. Each day unfolds differently, shaped by the conditions, with landings and zodiac cruises taking you deep into this untouched environment.

Wildlife encounters are constant and incredibly special. You might find yourself walking among colonies of penguins, from curious Gentoo to the striking Chinstrap, watching them go about their day, completely unfazed by your presence. Out on the water, whales surface nearby, sometimes so close you can hear the breath as they rise. Seals can often be seen resting on drifting ice, completely at ease in their surroundings.

It’s the unpredictability of it all that makes it so memorable. One moment you’re quietly taking in the landscape, and the next you’re witnessing wildlife in its most natural, untouched state.

Optional Extras

One of the most memorable parts of the journey was the Discovery Kayaking experience. Moving quietly through the water, surrounded by glaciers and drifting ice, it offered a completely different and deeply peaceful perspective of Antarctica. There’s a stillness to it that you simply don’t get any other way. No engine noise, no distractions, just you, the water, and Antarctica in its purest form. It was easily one of the most peaceful and memorable parts of the entire journey, and something I would highly recommend to anyone considering it.

Tip: Discovery Kayaking has very limited spaces, so it’s important to pre-book this experience well in advance to avoid missing out.

Life Onboard: The Ship, Crew & Expedition Experience

Life onboard strikes the perfect balance between comfort, connection, and purpose. The ship itself is beautifully designed. It’s modern, Scandinavian-inspired, and incredibly comfortable without feeling over the top. Large panoramic windows, cosy lounges, and quiet spaces make it easy to take in the ever-changing scenery, while three dining venues offer a great range of options depending on your mood.

There’s also a beautiful onboard sauna, perfectly positioned with panoramic views, offering a unique way to unwind while taking in the icy landscapes outside.

What truly sets the experience apart, however, is the people. The crew are warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout the journey. At the heart of it all is the Expedition Team, a group of scientists, naturalists, and polar experts who bring Antarctica to life in a way that goes far beyond what you see. Their knowledge, passion, and storytelling add depth to every landing, zodiac cruise, and onboard experience.

Panoramic views in the sauna

Panoramic views in the sauna

The Science Centre further enhances this, offering the opportunity to engage with real research and gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable environment. Experiences like the Science Boat allow you to step beyond observation and feel genuinely connected to the destination.

Evenings onboard are relaxed and reflective, with a natural sense of community forming among guests. It’s less about entertainment, and more about sharing the day’s experiences, reviewing photos, or simply watching the light shift across the ice.

Tip: Pre-book your preferred dining times in Aune and Fredheim, as they fill quickly. Don’t miss the daily briefings and recap sessions, as they add incredible context to your experience. And if the Science Boat is on your list, be sure to book early, as spaces are limited.

A Journey That Stays With You

What makes an expedition with HX so special is the balance it strikes between comfort, education, and genuine exploration. This isn’t about simply ticking Antarctica off a list, it’s about experiencing it in a way that feels meaningful, respectful, and deeply immersive.

Every part of the journey is thoughtfully designed to help you connect, not just with the destination, but with the environment, the wildlife, and the stories that make this place so extraordinary. It’s travel with purpose, and it’s what sets this experience apart.

This wasn’t just a trip.

It was one of the most powerful and humbling journeys I’ve ever had. Antarctica has a way of staying with you, quietly shifting your perspective long after you’ve returned home.
And with HX, you don’t just visit this incredible place… you truly connect with it.

Tip: Go in with an open mind and flexible expectations. Antarctica runs on nature’s schedule, and that unpredictability is part of what makes it so unforgettable.

Crystalized at Sea: My Crystal Cruise from Brisbane to Cairns

A Journey That Redefines Luxury

There are cruises…and then there are journeys that completely redefine what luxury travel can be.

My March 2026 voyage with Crystal Cruises from Brisbane to Cairns was one of those rare experiences.

It’s that moment when the service, the atmosphere, the dining, and the quiet elegance of life onboard all come together – and I  realised I had fallen in love with the Crystal way of travelling.

My home for the voyage was the Sapphire Suite, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Spacious (40 sqm), beautifully appointed, and designed with understated elegance, it felt more like a luxurious apartment than a cabin at sea.

Every morning, our personal Butler Krisztian just knew the perfect way to start our day with a hot, fresh in suite breakfast presented to perfection.

Crystal Serenity

First Impressions of Crystal Serenity

Our first day at sea was spent exploring this remarkable ship. Finding theatres and bars oozing with Old Hollywood charm, we couldn’t wait for the coming days to experience every corner of this beautiful ship.

Although the ship was at capacity, we walked around and barely noticed other passengers. The space per person created the feeling that we were the only two people on board.

There was no early morning reserving a sun lounge or lining up for a table at lunch time – this is how cruising should be, relaxed and stress free.

Pool Deck

Casual BeefBar (Asian Fusion)

Ahh the Serenity!

Travel always comes with the unexpected, and during our itinerary we encountered one of those moments the morning we tendered just off shore at Airlie Beach.

Weather conditions meant the ship couldn’t safely tender guests ashore – a situation that can certainly frustrate guests, but I was impressed at how the Crystal crew handled it.

Communication was clear and calm. Before we knew it, a new “Daily Updated Reflections”- (our daily cruise information) was delivered to our suite. Rather than feeling like a disruption, the day simply became another opportunity to enjoy the ship’s endless amenities. and entertainment.

Our afternoon was spent sipping a chilled glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc and our daily canapes on our verandah (delivered to our suite 4.30pm each day) while looking over the turquoise Coral Sea and Airlie Beach in the distance.

Dining That Rivals the World’s Best

I was left speechless at the endless choices when it came to dining. From the casual settings to the more formal venues this was next level dining at sea.

Dining aboard Crystal is an experience in itself, and the highlight for me was Umi Uma by Nobu. The balance of Japanese precision with bold, modern touches created meals that were both elegant and exciting. Each course arrived like a small work of art.

The atmosphere was intimate and refined, yet relaxed enough that you could truly appreciate the experience. It’s rare to find dining at sea that rivals top restaurants on land – but Umi Uma genuinely does.

Umi Uma By Nobu

Why Crystal Stays With You

This voyage reminded me why cruising, when done well, can be one of the most rewarding and memorable ways to travel.

From the quiet comfort of my Sapphire Suite, to the extraordinary dining through out the ship, to the grace and professionalism of the crew when plans unexpectedly changed, every detail felt thoughtful and intentional. It was the kind of care and hospitality that seems increasingly rare in todays modern travel.

Crystal Cruises doesn’t simply offer a holiday. It offers something far more timeless – where elegance, service, and experience truly matter.

And once you’ve been “Crystalized”, it’s very hard to imagine sailing any other way.

Life on board

My day would start at 6:15 am with a tea in the Main Lounge, where a 24-hour tea and coffee station is available. I’d read the daily cruiser via the AmaWaterways app to know the times of excursions, onboard activities, and information about the town we were in. At 6:30 am, fresh pastries arrive from the kitchen, impossible to resist. Breakfast at 7:30 am in the restaurant was always a delight, with the staff remembering my hot drink order and glass of sparkling wine. By 9 am, it was time for our morning excursion on foot, by bike, or by bus to a nearby town returning to the ship by 12:30 pm for a delicious lunch. Afternoons offered either another excursion or time onboard to enjoy local wines, quizzes, watching the ship pass through locks, card games, or relaxing in the outdoor spaces. Afternoon tea at 4 pm was a perfect chance to chat with fellow travellers about the day’s adventures. At 6 pm, Sip & Sail cocktail hour featured a daily special cocktail or other drinks from the extensive menu while the tour director explained the next day’s excursions. Dinner at 7 pm was a highlight with local delicacies served in a relaxed, elegant setting, followed by live music or entertainment, and sometimes dancing with Roberto, the in-house musician and DJ.

Cruising the Danube with Riverside Luxury Cruises

Cruising the Danube with Riverside

A Week on the Danube Like No Other

I don’t think I’ve ever crammed so much charm, history, and straight-up fun into one week as I did on this Danube River cruise.

And the timing? Couldn’t have been better. The whole thing lined up with Hungary’s National Day, which meant parades, traditions, and the most epic fireworks show over Budapest – all from the deck of the ship.

Thank you, Riverside Luxury Cruises, this is something I will never forget.

Alana On Mozart

Alana on board Riverside Mozart with Riverside Luxury Cruises

Vienna’s Grand Charm

We kicked things off in Vienna, and wow… this city is like walking through a postcard. Palaces, opera houses, and ridiculously pretty streets everywhere you turn. After settling onto the Riverside Mozart (yes, it’s as fancy as it sounds), I did my favourite “new city ritual” – ditched the map, picked a random street, and just wandered.

That night, we had our first dinner on board, met the crew, and got chatting with other travellers. Within a few hours it already felt like we were in for something special.

Vienna

St Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna

Quirky and Underrated

Next up was Bratislava in Slovakia, which was such a fun contrast to Vienna. Smaller, quirkier, and way more laid-back.

The Old Town is full of colourful little houses and cobblestone lanes – total storybook. Some people jumped on bikes to explore, but I couldn’t pass up a wine tasting at a 16th-century castle. Bratislava feels a little under the radar compared to other capitals, which made it feel extra cool to discover.

Alana In Bratislava

Alana exploring Old Town Bratislava

Cruising into Hungary

Then it was onto Hungary, with stops in Esztergom and Visegrád before sailing into Budapest. Esztergom’s basilica is massive – you can spot it from forever away – and inside it’s jaw-dropping. Visegrád had this medieval fortress perched above the river with beautiful views of The Danube River.

But nothing, and I mean nothing, beat the moment we cruised into Budapest at night.

The bridges lit up, the Parliament glowing, the whole skyline sparkling… one of those travel moments where you just stand there grinning like, “is this real life?”

Hungary Sail

A beautiful day sailing out of Esztergom onboard the Riverside Mozart

National Day Magic

And then Budapest itself. Absolute highlight. You can tour Parliament, wander Fisherman’s Bastion (which looks like a Disney castle), or just relax along the riverbanks.

But being there for National Day? I felt so honoured to be able to experience their National Day with the locals. The whole city came alive with music, food stalls, and celebrations. I ate my bodyweight in lángos (fried bread smothered in garlic oil, sour cream, and cheese – I’m still daydreaming about this), tried some local drinks, and joined the crowd clapping along to traditional dancing. The energy was excellent.

The grand finale? Fireworks over the Danube. We had dinner on the top deck of the ship, and as the city lit up and the fireworks exploded, it felt like Budapest was putting on a private show just for us. Pure magic.

Fire Works

More Surprises Along the Way

Even after Budapest, the cruise kept surprising me. In Mohács, I learned about their wild Busójárás Carnival traditions – think scary masks, costumes, and folklore. Then in Kalocsa, I got a paprika masterclass (they don’t call it the Paprika Capital of the World for nothing).

Pécs turned out to be one of the highlights. The old town is full of charm, with pastel streets and lively squares, but the star of the show was the Pécs Cathedral. Riverside Luxury Cruises treated us to a private organ performance inside, which gave me goosebumps.

Pecs

A Trip I’ll Never Forget

By the time we sailed back into Budapest, I was torn between being full of gratitude and not wanting it to end. From Vienna’s elegance to Bratislava’s charm, to Budapest’s full-blown celebrations, every stop had its own flavour.

If you’re ever thinking about a Danube cruise, think Riverside Luxury Cruises, and trust me- try to line it up with Hungary’s National Day.

It takes an already incredible trip and adds a whole other layer of magic. I came home with paprika, wine, and a whole stack of memories I’ll be holding onto forever.
