Spring Skiing in Japan: My Stay at Club Med Tomamu Hokkaido

More Than Just a Ski Holiday

If you’ve ever assumed spring skiing means slushy snow, crowded slopes and “end of season” conditions, Club Med Tomamu completely proved me wrong.

Located in Hokkaido, Japan, Club Med Tomamu is an all-inclusive ski resort that combines incredible skiing, luxury accommodation, amazing food and stress-free travel all in one place. With lift passes, ski lessons, dining, drinks and entertainment all included, it’s the kind of holiday where you can simply arrive and enjoy.

What surprised me most though was just how good the snow still was, despite travelling towards the end of the season. We had beautiful bluebird days, fantastic coverage on the mountain and far fewer crowds than peak winter, which honestly made the whole experience even better.

Between attempting to learn snowboarding (with varying levels of success 😂), soaking in outdoor onsens surrounded by snow, discovering my newly acquired taste for the premium self-serve soju station, eating way too much incredible Japanese food and international cuisine, and somehow finding the energy to race Mario Kart ski bikes down the mountain, Club Med Tomamu ended up being so much more than just a ski holiday.

Bluebird skies, fresh snow and surprisingly warm spring days. Club Med Tomamu completely changed my expectations of end-of-season skiing in Japan.

Why the Club Med Lessons Work So Well

Included as part of your stay are group ski and snowboard lessons each morning after breakfast and again after lunch, with lessons graded according to your ability level. The lessons aren’t compulsory either, so if you’d rather spend the day exploring the mountain at your own pace you absolutely can. But with classes catered to everyone from complete beginners right through to advanced and expert riders, it honestly feels silly not to take advantage of having professional instruction included as part of the experience.

Having only ever skied before, I decided to challenge myself and give snowboarding a go. In my head, I fully expected to be confidently shredding after lesson one… unfortunately my actual ability had other ideas.

That said, the instructors were incredibly patient, kind and encouraging, and I honestly could not have asked for a better experience.

One thing I really loved was that the instructors stay with your group on the mountain throughout the day, so even if you’re travelling with people of different abilities, you never feel like you’re on your own or have to ski or snowboard separately all day. Everyone naturally regroups for lunch at the restaurant between lessons before heading back out for the afternoon session, then eventually meeting at The Nest for après-ski drinks once the day wraps up.

Another thing I really liked about the lessons was how easy it was to meet people. I was technically solo in my snowboard group at first, but very quickly bonded with the other beginners over our shared inability to stay upright.

There’s something very humbling about all falling over together on a mountain that immediately turns strangers into friends. Everyone naturally cheered each other on, laughed through the disasters and celebrated every tiny win, like successfully making it down without stacking it.

While I definitely wasn’t flying down the mountain on day one, or even day two, I still managed to progress up a lesson level and successfully tackle the lifts on my snowboard.

Après-Ski, Cocktails & Dining at Club Med Tomamu

One of my favourite spots at Club Med Tomamu was definitely “The Nest” an adults only lounge within the resort featuring a cosy alpine atmosphere, fireplace and beautiful snowy forest surrounds.

With the beautiful bluebird days we experienced, relaxing there with one of their signature cocktails, “The Nest” featuring sake and a few other delicious ingredients, quickly became a daily ritual. The cocktail menu quickly started feeling more like a checklist because obviously one must try them all! It was dangerously easy to have more than one.

The Nest perfectly captures what makes Club Med Tomamu feel like more than just a ski resort. It’s not only about the snow and activities, but also the atmosphere, scenery and slowing down properly for a few days.

That same feeling carried through to the dining experience, which honestly exceeded all expectations.

The main restaurant offered an incredible variety each day and genuinely felt like a dining experience rather than just a buffet. From fresh sushi and sashimi to seafood, international favourites, live cooking stations and amazing desserts, every meal felt indulgent whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner after a day on the slopes.

The Unkai Bar is the perfect spot for specialty coffees, morning tea, afternoon tea and supper throughout the day. Because we travelled during spring skiing season rather than peak winter, we were lucky enough to sit out on the terrace in the sunshine watching the early morning riders heading down the mountain while enjoying our coffee, such a relaxing way to start the day before joining our lessons.

One of the standout experiences though was dining at HAKU, the resort’s yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) specialty restaurant. Even the walk there felt like part of the experience. Wandering through the long glass-lit corridor surrounded by snow outside honestly felt a little magical, like you were heading somewhere really special hidden within the resort.

Once seated, plates of fresh meats, seafood and vegetables are brought to your table for you to cook yourself over the BBQ, which made the whole experience feel interactive, relaxed and very Japanese.

Mina-Mina Beach

Another huge bonus of staying at Club Med Tomamu is having access to Mina-Mina Beach, located just across the road from the resort and included as part of your stay.

Mina-Mina Beach is actually home to Japan’s largest indoor beach, featuring a huge wave pool kept at a tropical 30 degrees year-round which feels very surreal when surrounded by snow outside.

The wave sessions run every 30 minutes and create such a fun atmosphere, especially for families or anyone wanting a break from skiing and snowboarding.

For me though, the real highlight was the outdoor onsen experience. After a day on the mountain, soaking in the warm outdoor baths while surrounded by snow was incredibly relaxing and felt so uniquely Japanese.

It’s another reason why Club Med Tomamu feels like so much more than just a ski holiday, it’s the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation and experiences you wouldn’t normally expect from a snow trip.

Mario Kart Energy

For the non-skiers and non-snowboarders wondering what to do in the snow, one of many options is to rent Mario Kart/ski bike hybrid things and absolutely send it down the mountain.
Naturally, one must prepare for this highly professional athletic event by stopping at KUMO Cafe first. They’re known for their “Cloud Cakes” and “Cloud Soft Serve” while people wait for the UNKAI (sea of clouds) to appear.
Honestly, the cloud cake and cloud soft serve turned out to be elite race fuel for getting down the mountain. We laughed the entire way down and somehow made it to the bottom in one piece. Adrenaline + whipped cloud goodness = success.

Mario Kart ski bikes, mountain views and cloud-soft serve fuel easily one of the funniest ways to experience the snow at Club Med Tomamu.

Final Thoughts on Club Med Tomamu

If you’ve been thinking about a Japan snow holiday, Club Med Tomamu is genuinely one of those places that makes the entire experience feel easy, exciting and unforgettable all at once.

From bluebird spring skiing days and incredible food to outdoor onsens, après-ski cocktails and the kind of atmosphere that makes you never want to leave, it’s so much more than just a ski resort.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, family, group of friends or even solo, it’s the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation and all-inclusive luxury and after experiencing it for myself, I can completely understand why so many people return year after year.

Crystalized at Sea: My Crystal Cruise from Brisbane to Cairns

A Journey That Redefines Luxury

There are cruises…and then there are journeys that completely redefine what luxury travel can be.

My March 2026 voyage with Crystal Cruises from Brisbane to Cairns was one of those rare experiences.

It’s that moment when the service, the atmosphere, the dining, and the quiet elegance of life onboard all come together – and I  realised I had fallen in love with the Crystal way of travelling.

My home for the voyage was the Sapphire Suite, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Spacious (40 sqm), beautifully appointed, and designed with understated elegance, it felt more like a luxurious apartment than a cabin at sea.

Every morning, our personal Butler Krisztian just knew the perfect way to start our day with a hot, fresh in suite breakfast presented to perfection.

Crystal Serenity

First Impressions of Crystal Serenity

Our first day at sea was spent exploring this remarkable ship. Finding theatres and bars oozing with Old Hollywood charm, we couldn’t wait for the coming days to experience every corner of this beautiful ship.

Although the ship was at capacity, we walked around and barely noticed other passengers. The space per person created the feeling that we were the only two people on board.

There was no early morning reserving a sun lounge or lining up for a table at lunch time – this is how cruising should be, relaxed and stress free.

Ahh the Serenity!

Travel always comes with the unexpected, and during our itinerary we encountered one of those moments the morning we tendered just off shore at Airlie Beach.

Weather conditions meant the ship couldn’t safely tender guests ashore – a situation that can certainly frustrate guests, but I was impressed at how the Crystal crew handled it.

Communication was clear and calm. Before we knew it, a new “Daily Updated Reflections”- (our daily cruise information) was delivered to our suite. Rather than feeling like a disruption, the day simply became another opportunity to enjoy the ship’s endless amenities. and entertainment.

Our afternoon was spent sipping a chilled glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc and our daily canapes on our verandah (delivered to our suite 4.30pm each day) while looking over the turquoise Coral Sea and Airlie Beach in the distance.

Dining That Rivals the World’s Best

I was left speechless at the endless choices when it came to dining. From the casual settings to the more formal venues this was next level dining at sea.

Dining aboard Crystal is an experience in itself, and the highlight for me was Umi Uma by Nobu. The balance of Japanese precision with bold, modern touches created meals that were both elegant and exciting. Each course arrived like a small work of art.

The atmosphere was intimate and refined, yet relaxed enough that you could truly appreciate the experience. It’s rare to find dining at sea that rivals top restaurants on land – but Umi Uma genuinely does.

Why Crystal Stays With You

This voyage reminded me why cruising, when done well, can be one of the most rewarding and memorable ways to travel.

From the quiet comfort of my Sapphire Suite, to the extraordinary dining through out the ship, to the grace and professionalism of the crew when plans unexpectedly changed, every detail felt thoughtful and intentional. It was the kind of care and hospitality that seems increasingly rare in todays modern travel.

Crystal Cruises doesn’t simply offer a holiday. It offers something far more timeless – where elegance, service, and experience truly matter.

And once you’ve been “Crystalized”, it’s very hard to imagine sailing any other way.

Palm Lounge

Club Med Bintan: All-Inclusive Relaxation

I recently was lucky enough to spend four nights at Club Med Bintan and slipped into holiday mode almost immediately.

Getting there is part of the ease: it’s a quick hop from Singapore, about an hour by ferry from Tanah Merah to Bintan, going from city buzz to beach breeze in the time it takes to watch an episode of your favourite show. This also offers the opportunity to enjoy a city stay and an island escape in the one trip.

On arrival to Club Med Bintan, the team were unfailingly friendly and helpful, the kind of genuine service where nothing is too much to ask, and that tone sets the pace for the whole stay. From the moment I arrived, everything felt intentionally easy.

Resort Pools

First impressions: effortless and welcoming

Check-in was smooth and cheerful, and one tiny detail made a big difference all week: the resort bracelet doubles as your room key. A quick tap and you’re in, no card to misplace, nothing to stash while you swim or head to activities. It sounds small, but it keeps the day light and hands-free.

The property is beautifully spread out. Paths wind through tidy, tropical gardens so you’re walking in dappled shade and the beach sits right in front of the main hub, with soft sand and calm water that’s perfect for paddle boards and splashy swims. Loungers are plentiful, and there are quiet nooks, little terraces and sofa corners, where you can sneak a coffee, answer a message, or just listen to the waves. Staff greet you as you pass, and it never feels forced; it sets a relaxed rhythm you fall into quickly.

Good to know: shady seating near the beach fills first; grab a spot after breakfast if you want front-row ocean time.

Beach Bar

Beach Bar with your feet in sand and a drink in hand

What’s included (and it’s plenty)

This is all-inclusive that genuinely covers the bases. The main restaurant rotates themes across generous buffets, so you don’t get menu fatigue: fresh salad bars, made-to-order pastas and grills, Asian favourites (noodles, curries, stir-fries), and a dessert table that tests willpower daily. There are easy options for kids and a handful of healthier plates if you’re trying to balance indulgence with “I still want to feel good in my swimmers”.

Bars are dotted around the resort, so a cold drink is never far. Iced coffees by day, cocktails by late afternoon, and mocktails for non-drinkers. The beauty of Club Med is the flow between activities: you can ping-pong from paddle boards to a fitness class to beach time without ever thinking about add-ons or carrying a wallet. Tennis, archery, snorkel outings, yoga with a sea breeze, you just rock up and the team will kit you out and get you going.

What stood out was how approachable everything felt. Staff give clear briefings and gentle one-on-one tips, so trying something new, whether it’s the catamaran, the trapeze, or your first serve in years, feels safe, supported, and fun rather than intimidating. If you’re more “lounger than launcher”, that’s ok too; the point is choice without pressure.

Good to know: popular classes and the trapeze fill up, so glance at the daily schedule at breakfast and pencil in anything you don’t want to miss.

Renovations underway: fresh look incoming

The resort is currently in the midst of a refresh, and I’m genuinely excited to see how it all comes together. The team are great at communicating any works and keeping the holiday vibe front and centre with discrete time windows, smart detours, and plenty of alternative spaces so nothing feels “closed off.” The upgrades promise lighter, brighter rooms and thoughtful touches.

I can’t wait to come back and see the finished look. If the service and current experience are anything to go by, the facelift will elevate what already works beautifully.

Evenings with a little sparkle

Nights come with a playful sense of occasion. There are themed dress-up evenings, with 45/88 Night a staple, and a rotation of other themes like tropical or all white. You can go all-in or keep it simple; add a scarf, a bright lip, or a white tee, and you’ll still feel part of the fun. The shared spirit makes dinner and the after-dinner shows feel like a celebration rather than “just another buffet”.

The shows are delightfully high-energy. Think acrobatics, dance, live vocals, and afterwards the vibe bleeds into the bar with music, a bit of dancing, and the easy mingling that happens when everyone’s on holiday time. It’s also when you notice how connected the team are with guests; they remember names, favourite drinks, and who’s brave enough to try the next day’s trapeze.

Good to know: pack one “dress-up” outfit (or a couple of accessories) so you can lean into theme nights without overthinking it.

The spa and why I’d go back

The spa was the surprise hero. Treatment rooms feel serene without being stuffy; therapists genuinely listen and adjust pressure and technique to what your body needs, not a script. Pricing is refreshingly fair for the quality, which makes a second booking feel like an easy yes. I went once, went back again, and would happily plan future afternoons around those appointments.

If you love a golden-hour glow, aim for late afternoon or sunset slots; stepping out to the sound of the ocean with loose shoulders and a clear head is peak holiday. Post-treatment, wander straight to the beach bar for a tea or a spritz and watch the sky change.

Rooms, meanwhile, are exactly what you want on a beach break: good beds, cold air-con, blackout curtains, and quick access to the pool and sea so the whole experience flows from restful sleep to easy days and back again. Storage is sensible, showers are strong, and housekeeping is quietly efficient; fresh towels appear, sand disappears, and you never have to think about it.

Good to know: book spa times early in your stay. Prime sunset slots are popular, especially on check-out eve.

Day Spa Garden Walk

Beautiful paths and garden views of the Spa

Club Med Bintan is a sweet spot for travellers who want the decision-fatigue taken out of their holiday without losing the fun. Couples slide easily into lazy beach mornings, spa-soaked afternoons and sunset cocktails; families (teens included) get a ready-made menu of things to try, and multi-gen groups or friends’ getaways can peel off to do their own thing, before regrouping for dinner and the evening shows. It’s also wonderfully kind to solo travelers, the staff are warm, the activities are social, and there are plenty of quiet corners when you want a breather.

If you’re chasing an effortless, friendly, genuinely all-inclusive beach escape, with staff who make you feel looked after, activities you’ll actually try, and a spa that punches well above its price, Club Med Bintan delivers. It’s the kind of place where the logistics disappear and you just… play, rest, repeat.
