Sri Lanka: A Country That Has It All

One Island, Endless Experiences

There aren’t many destinations where you can wake up amongst rolling tea plantations, spend the afternoon on safari, and finish your holiday relaxing on a tropical beach.

Sri Lanka packs an incredible amount of diversity into one relatively small island, with every region revealing a completely different side of the country.

Changing Landscapes Around Every Corner

Over the course of our journey, we explored ancient UNESCO World Heritage sites, wandered through lush tea plantations, searched for wildlife in national parks, and unwound along the country’s beautiful southern coastline.

What amazed me most was how quickly the scenery changed. Within just a few hours’ drive, we’d go from cool, misty mountains to golden beaches lined with swaying palm trees. Every day felt like we had arrived in a completely new destination.

The Difference a Private Guide Makes

One of the biggest highlights of the trip was travelling with our own private driver and guide, organised through Exotic Destinations. It completely transformed the experience.

Instead of worrying about navigating unfamiliar roads or planning each day’s logistics, we could simply relax and enjoy the journey.

Along the way, we learnt about Sri Lanka’s history and culture, discovered hidden local spots, and stopped whenever something caught our attention.

It was effortless, and because every itinerary is tailor-made, every journey can be designed around your own interests, pace and travel style.

Into the Wild at Yala

As someone who loves wildlife, the safaris were a definite highlight.

Yala National Park exceeded every expectation.

We encountered elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, peacocks, countless bird species, and, incredibly, several leopards. The moment one of the park’s largest male leopards calmly walked just metres from our jeep is something I’ll never forget.

It’s one of those travel experiences that simply can’t be replicated.

A Breath of Fresh Mountain Air

The hill country revealed a completely different side of Sri Lanka.

The cooler climate provided a welcome contrast after the tropical heat, while endless emerald-green tea plantations stretched across the mountains in every direction.

Visiting historic tea estates and learning about Sri Lanka’s world-famous Ceylon tea added another fascinating layer to the journey, and the scenery was some of the most beautiful we experienced anywhere on the island.

Authentic Cuisine and Warm Smiles

And then there was the food.

Every meal was bursting with flavour, from fragrant curries and freshly caught seafood to tropical fruit picked at its peak.

I quickly discovered that Sri Lankans don’t hold back on the spice, but every dish was incredibly fresh, authentic, and absolutely delicious.

Combined with the genuine warmth and hospitality of the local people, we felt genuinely welcomed everywhere we went.

Why Sri Lanka Has It All

What surprised me most about Sri Lanka wasn’t just its incredible beauty, but how effortlessly it combines so many different experiences into one journey.

On a single journey, you can encounter incredible wildlife, explore ancient temples, wander through rolling tea plantations, relax on beautiful beaches, and connect with some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Few destinations offer so much variety while feeling so easy to explore.

Whether you’re dreaming of luxury resorts, unforgettable safaris, scenic train journeys through the hill country, days spent relaxing on the beach, or a little of everything, Sri Lanka offers an experience that’s as diverse as it is memorable.

A Travel Advisor’s Guide to Spending 6–12 Months Abroad (Canada Edition)

How to Prepare for Extended Solo Travel

There is a quiet courage required to step away from your life for a while.

Not the cinematic kind.
The practical kind.

The moment you board a flight with one suitcase, a new SIM card, and the understanding that if something goes wrong, you are the one who will figure it out.

This is exactly why extended solo travel can be so transformative.

As a travel advisor (and someone who left in 2022 with one suitcase and a plan) I have seen more Australians choosing long-term travel than ever before. Whether prompted by burnout, a life reset, a ski season that evolves into something longer, or a long-awaited sabbatical, Canada remains one of the most accessible and rewarding places to begin.

Why More Australians Are Choosing Extended Travel

Travel is no longer viewed as a short escape. For many, it has become a necessary pause and recalibration.

Australians are delaying traditional milestones, prioritising experience over routine, and recognising that waiting for the “perfect time” often means never going.

The travellers most often taking the leap include:

  • Professionals seeking perspective after burnout
  • Individuals rebuilding confidence after major life changes
  • Quarter-life reset seekers
  • Ski season workers who decide to stay longer

Solo travel asks you to move forward despite uncertainty. Without familiar routines or support systems, growth becomes inevitable.

Why Canada is the Perfect Start

Canada offers a rare balance: adventure paired with stability.

It suits Australians particularly well due to:

  • Accessible long-stay visa options
  • English-speaking and culturally familiar environments
  • A safe, structured society
  • Strong lifestyle alignment with Australian values
  • Established Australian communities

British Columbia is especially appealing. For outdoor enthusiasts, it offers mountains, lakes, forests and coastline within easy reach, while Vancouver consistently ranks among the world’s most liveable cities.

Choosing Your Long-Stay Path

There is no single way to live abroad — only the path that suits your personality and priorities.

Common approaches include:

  • Ski season work
Often begins as one winter and evolves into multiple seasons.
  • Working Holiday Visa
Travel initially, find casual work, then build stability.
  • Slow travel sabbatical
Stay for several months to experience a seasonal shift and establish routine.

City vs Resort Living

Ski towns suit high-energy, social personalities.
Cities such as Vancouver suit those seeking balance, routine, and professional opportunities.

Resilience, adaptability, and an open mindset will serve you well in either environment.

Building a Life, Not Just Taking a Holiday

Thriving abroad requires intention.

Build friendships
Be open, patient, and willing to participate.

Create stability
Develop routines that provide grounding.

Protect your energy
Monitor emotional capacity and allow time for rest.

Resilience is important, but so is recovery.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Departing without adequate financial buffers
  • Quitting when the adjustment period becomes challenging
  • Expecting immediate comfort
  • Treating the experience as something to prove rather than to enjoy

Extended travel is not always easy. That is part of its value.

How Extended Solo Travel Changes You

When you live abroad alone, there is no opting out.

When your family is asleep fifteen hours away, you learn to show up for yourself.

And it is remarkable what you discover when self-reliance becomes non-negotiable.

What You Bring Home

Not souvenirs.

Perspective.
Confidence.
Self-trust.
