Sri Lanka: A Country That Has It All

One Island, Endless Experiences

There aren’t many destinations where you can wake up amongst rolling tea plantations, spend the afternoon on safari, and finish your holiday relaxing on a tropical beach.

Sri Lanka packs an incredible amount of diversity into one relatively small island, with every region revealing a completely different side of the country.

Changing Landscapes Around Every Corner

Over the course of our journey, we explored ancient UNESCO World Heritage sites, wandered through lush tea plantations, searched for wildlife in national parks, and unwound along the country’s beautiful southern coastline.

What amazed me most was how quickly the scenery changed. Within just a few hours’ drive, we’d go from cool, misty mountains to golden beaches lined with swaying palm trees. Every day felt like we had arrived in a completely new destination.

The Difference a Private Guide Makes

One of the biggest highlights of the trip was travelling with our own private driver and guide, organised through Exotic Destinations. It completely transformed the experience.

Instead of worrying about navigating unfamiliar roads or planning each day’s logistics, we could simply relax and enjoy the journey.

Along the way, we learnt about Sri Lanka’s history and culture, discovered hidden local spots, and stopped whenever something caught our attention.

It was effortless, and because every itinerary is tailor-made, every journey can be designed around your own interests, pace and travel style.

Into the Wild at Yala

As someone who loves wildlife, the safaris were a definite highlight.

Yala National Park exceeded every expectation.

We encountered elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, peacocks, countless bird species, and, incredibly, several leopards. The moment one of the park’s largest male leopards calmly walked just metres from our jeep is something I’ll never forget.

It’s one of those travel experiences that simply can’t be replicated.

A Breath of Fresh Mountain Air

The hill country revealed a completely different side of Sri Lanka.

The cooler climate provided a welcome contrast after the tropical heat, while endless emerald-green tea plantations stretched across the mountains in every direction.

Visiting historic tea estates and learning about Sri Lanka’s world-famous Ceylon tea added another fascinating layer to the journey, and the scenery was some of the most beautiful we experienced anywhere on the island.

Authentic Cuisine and Warm Smiles

And then there was the food.

Every meal was bursting with flavour, from fragrant curries and freshly caught seafood to tropical fruit picked at its peak.

I quickly discovered that Sri Lankans don’t hold back on the spice, but every dish was incredibly fresh, authentic, and absolutely delicious.

Combined with the genuine warmth and hospitality of the local people, we felt genuinely welcomed everywhere we went.

Why Sri Lanka Has It All

What surprised me most about Sri Lanka wasn’t just its incredible beauty, but how effortlessly it combines so many different experiences into one journey.

On a single journey, you can encounter incredible wildlife, explore ancient temples, wander through rolling tea plantations, relax on beautiful beaches, and connect with some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Few destinations offer so much variety while feeling so easy to explore.

Spirit of Antarctica with Aurora Expeditions

Life changing experience

There are trips you enjoy, and then there are trips that quietly change you.

Sailing to the white continent with Aurora Expeditions on their Spirit of Antarctica voyage was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. From the moment we departed Ushuaia, it was clear this wasn’t just a cruise. It was an expedition in the truest sense of the word. Purposeful, considered, and deeply respectful of the environment we were about to step into.

A tiny miracle, moments after hatching.

Drake lake or drake shake?

Crossing the Drake Passage felt like a rite of passage. Days at sea weren’t just about getting from A to B. They were filled with learning.

Briefings on Zodiac operations and landings, lectures on wildlife and glaciology, photography workshops, and deep dives into how Antarctica is protected under strict environmental guidelines. IAATO protocols were front and centre, and you could feel how seriously Aurora takes its responsibility to protect this fragile place.

And then came Antarctica.

Getting up close

Zodiac landings through drifting ice, weaving between icebergs that glowed blue and white in the changing light. Standing among penguin colonies as they went about their day, completely unfazed by our quiet presence. Hiking up snowy ridgelines to lookout points that made you stop in your tracks. Watching glaciers calve into the sea, the sound echoing across the water.

One of the things that truly sets Aurora apart is their small-ship approach. With far fewer passengers on board compared to larger expedition vessels, we were able to maximise our time off the ship. Most days allowed for two landings, each lasting around two to three hours. That meant long, unhurried moments on shore. Time to walk, hike, sit quietly, watch wildlife, take photos, and simply absorb where we were. There was never a sense of being rushed back to the ship.

A whale of a time

One of the most unforgettable experiences was our time with the whales. Humpbacks breaching in the distance, swimming alongside our Zodiacs, and feeding so close we could hear the bubbles bursting as they surfaced. We watched bubble-net feeding in complete silence, engines cut, as these enormous animals moved gracefully around us. It was humbling, emotional, and something I will never forget.

What made this journey truly exceptional was the expedition team. These weren’t guides reading from scripts. These were people who have lived this work. Marine biologists, glaciologists, former Antarctic station crew, photographers, and conservationists. People who have dedicated their lives to understanding, protecting, and sharing this part of the world.

Expert commentary

Their passion was contagious. Every lecture felt like a privilege to attend. Every landing was carefully planned with safety, wildlife, and environmental impact in mind. Casual conversations over coffee turned into lessons about seabirds, ice formations, or life on Antarctic research stations.

We were also invited to be more than observers. Aurora’s Citizen Science program allowed us to actively contribute to real research. We logged whale sightings, identified flukes to help track individuals around the globe, recorded seabird sightings, and even took part in cloud surveys. Knowing that our time there could help contribute to ongoing scientific research added a deeper layer of meaning to the experience.

How was the ship?

Life on board the Sylvia Earle was just as memorable. The ship itself felt warm, welcoming, and perfectly designed for exploration. One of the standout features is its cutting-edge X-Bow design, built to slice through waves rather than crash over them. This not only improves comfort in rough conditions like the Drake Passage, but also makes the journey feel smoother and more stable, even when the Southern Ocean reminds you who’s in charge. Every detail on board felt purposeful, from the spacious observation areas to the expedition-ready layout that made gearing up for landings seamless.

Evenings were spent in daily recaps, where the expedition team shared highlights, photos, and plans for the next day. It created a sense of connection and community that grew stronger as the voyage went on.

From Explorers to Ambassadors

As we began our return across the Drake Passage, the focus shifted to reflection. Workshops on becoming Antarctica Ambassadors once home encouraged us to keep learning, sharing, and advocating for this extraordinary place. We were given resources, books, podcasts, and documentaries to continue our education long after the voyage ended.

Our final night brought everything full circle. A farewell from the expedition team, a voyage slideshow filled with photos and videos that captured moments we didn’t even realise had been documented, and a Captain’s farewell dinner that felt both celebratory and bittersweet. Later, in the Tektite Bar, guitars came out and the expedition team joined us for an impromptu sing-along. Strangers who, by that point, felt like old friends. One of those nights you wish you could pause.

And then, Ushuaia. Just like that, it was over.

You have to go

I still can’t quite believe I’ve stood on the continent I’ve dreamed about for so long. Antarctica has a way of stripping everything back. It’s quiet, vast, and powerful.

This journey will stay with me forever. Not just for where I went, but for how it made me feel.

Antarctica doesn’t just leave footprints in the snow.
It leaves something much deeper behind.

Oceania Allura Miami to Bahamas

New Ship, New Destination

In 2025, I had the privilege of sailing aboard this remarkable new vessel on its debut and inaugural voyage departing the United States from Miami, bound for the Bahamas and return. An inaugural sailing always carries a distinct sense of occasion. A blend of anticipation, ceremony, and discovery and this short itinerary delivered on all fronts.

Having now experienced multiple cruises across a range of ships, styles, and destinations, I can confidently say this voyage stood apart. What made it even more meaningful was sharing the experience with my mother on her very first cruise. From embarkation to our final morning back in port, it was a journey we genuinely savoured from beginning to end.

Exploring the Ship

Stepping aboard the Oceania Allura for the first time was an experience defined by understated elegance and thoughtful design. As Oceania Cruises newest addition, the ship immediately impresses with its refined residential aesthetic, light-filled public spaces, and an atmosphere that feels both contemporary and intimate. From the sweeping Grand Staircase to the beautifully curated artwork throughout the vessel, every detail reflects the brand’s signature focus on sophistication and comfort.

Exploring the ship revealed a collection of standout features, including expansive specialty dining venues that elevate the line’s renowned culinary program, a serene Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center designed for holistic wellness, and spacious veranda staterooms that emphasise both luxury and functionality. Must recommend the “Experience Shower” in the spa which I haven’t seen anywhere else, having modes to relax, energise or just give you a day to remember with it’s feel, and ambient light show all while in the spa.

The pool deck offers a relaxed yet polished retreat, while the lounges and bars provide inviting spaces to unwind. For a first visit, Allura strikes an impressive balance between modern innovation and the classic Oceania ambiance loyal guests appreciate.

The Great Food, The Amazing Views

Dining aboard Oceania Allura is a defining part of the experience, with the line’s culinary philosophy evident across every venue. From refined specialty restaurants showcasing expertly prepared steaks and Italian classics to vibrant pan-Asian concepts and elegant French inspired cuisine, the emphasis is firmly on quality ingredients and meticulous presentation. Even the more casual venues maintain an elevated standard, offering made-to-order dishes and thoughtfully curated menus that rival many land based restaurants. It’s a programme designed not simply to feed guests, but to create memorable dining moments at sea.

Equally captivating were the views as we sailed through the turquoise waters of the Bahamas. Whether enjoying breakfast on deck or a sunset cocktail by the pool, the ship provided a perfect vantage point for the region’s crystal-clear shallows and powder-white beaches. The contrast between Allura’s sleek, modern lines and the vivid blues of the Caribbean created a striking visual experience, one that reinforced why cruising remains such an immersive way to explore this part of the world.

Islands and Treasures in the Bahamas

Our time ashore was just as memorable. Visiting Gilligan’s Island felt surreal, with islands around this part having powdery sand, impossibly clear water, and a sense of complete seclusion. Swimming alongside sea turtles in their natural habitat was a genuine highlight, an experience that felt both surreal and humbling. We also encountered the Bahamas famous swimming pigs, an iconic sight that adds a playful and uniquely Bahamian touch to the day.

Another island stop offered a more indulgent perspective of the region, complete with beachfront cocktails and a leisurely cruise past some of the Bahamas most notable private residences. Among them were homes owned by Michael Jordan, Beyoncé Knowles, and Tiger Woods, a reminder of the destination’s long standing appeal to global icons. The combination of natural beauty and understated luxury made for a perfectly balanced island experience.

Miami from Start or the End

Of course, beginning and ending our journey in Miami meant a must do photo opportunity at the iconic Miami Beach sign, as pictured here with my mother. While in the area, South Beach is a highlight not to be missed, offering vibrant streets, Art Deco architecture, and a lively local scene. A stop at the famous Versace Mansion, where Gianni Versace lived before his untimely passing, adds a touch of history and glamour to any Miami visit.

Sweet Ending

Ending the cruise was a truly memorable experience from start to finish. I highly recommend Oceania Cruises, and the Oceania Allura in particular, for anyone seeking a luxurious voyage paired with exceptional dining. The itinerary itself was the perfect complement, with the journey from Miami to Nassau offering a seamless mix of relaxation, adventure, and stunning Caribbean scenery.
